Evaluation of cerebral maturation by visual and quantitative analysis of resting electroencephalography in children with primary nocturnal enuresis.

This study was undertaken to evaluate resting electroencephalographic (EEG) changes and their relations to cerebral maturation in children with primary nocturnal enuresis. Cerebral maturation is known to be important in the pathogenesis of this disorder. Twenty-five right-handed patients with primary nocturnal enuresis, aged 6 to 14 years, and 23 age- and sex-matched healthy children were included in this cross-sectional case-control study. The abnormalities detected using such techniques as hemispheral asymmetry, regional differences, and hyperventilation response in addition to visual and qu

Sex Differences in Sleep Phenotypes in the BACHD Mouse Model of Huntington's Disease.

Sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances are common features of Huntington's disease (HD). HD is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that affects men and women in equal numbers, but some epidemiological studies as well as preclinical work indicate there may be sex differences in disease progression. Since sex differences in HD could provide important insights to understand cellular and molecular mechanism(s), we used the bacterial artificial chromosome transgenic mouse model of HD (BACHD) to examine whether sex differences in sleep/wake cycles are detectable in an animal model of t

Cognitive stimulation has potential for brain activation in individuals with Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge regarding neuropsychological training in Rett syndrome (RS) is scarce. The aim of this study was to assess the outcome and the duration of the effect of cognitive stimulation on topographic electroencephalography (EEG) data in RS. METHODS: Twenty female children diagnosed with RS were included in the analysis. Girls with RS conducted a cognitive task using an eye-tracker designed to evaluate access and choice skills. EEG data were acquired during the experimental procedure including two 10-min baseline stages before and after the task. Topographical changes of several EE

Neurophysiological assessment of Alzheimer's disease individuals by a single electroencephalographic marker.

Here we presented a single electroencephalographic (EEG) marker for a neurophysiological assessment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients already diagnosed by current guidelines. The ability of the EEG marker to classify 127 AD individuals and 121 matched cognitively intact normal elderly (Nold) individuals was tested. Furthermore, its relationship to AD patients' cognitive status and structural brain integrity was examined. Low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) freeware estimated cortical sources of resting state eyes-closed EEG rhythms. The EEG marker was defined as the rat

PRKCDBP (CAVIN3) and CRY2 associate with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctions in the intrinsic clocks are suggested in patients with depressive disorders. The cryptochrome circadian clocks 1 and 2 (CRY1 and CRY2) proteins modulate circadian rhythms in a cell and influence emotional reactions and mood in an individual. The protein kinase C delta binding protein (PRKCDBP, or CAVIN3), similar to the serum deprivation response protein (SDPR, or CAVIN2), reduces metabolic stability of the PER2-CRY2 transcription factor complex that plays a role in the circadian rhythm synchronization. Our aim was to study SDPR, PRKCDBP, CRY1 and CRY2 genetic variants

Efficacy and safety of the adenosine administration test in the management of Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern in children with delta waves.

BACKGROUND: The Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern is a delta wave frequently detected in school-based cardiovascular screening programs in Japan. Although most children with Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern are asymptomatic, initial symptoms may include syncope or sudden death, necessitating accurate diagnosis and management. Delta waves can also indicate a fasciculoventricular pathway, which poses no risk and does not require management. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients referred to our hospital between April 2008 and March 2022 to evaluate the electrocardiographic signs of the W

Different patterns of electroencephalography during hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes mellitus: A case report.

RATIONALE: Electroencephalographic (EEG) changes are frequently observed not only by epileptic seizures but also by metabolic encephalopathies. The EEG changes during hypoglycemia are known as mixed frequency theta to delta activity with higher amplitude than the initial background rhythm. Although there are many reports about hypoglycemia induced EEG changes, few studies of hypoglycemic EEG patterns have been evaluated between arousal and sleep stage. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 45-year-old man who had been diagnosed as type 1 diabetes mellitus for 15 years admitted to the emergency room due to seiz

The Many ECG Faces of Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is rare and can predispose to tachyarrhythmias. This case illustrates the heterogeneous electrocardiographic (ECG) features of WPW syndrome. CASE SUMMARY: A 57-year-old woman was admitted with pneumonia and atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response (174 beats/min). Atrial fibrillation terminated after diltiazem infusion, and repeat ECG showed sinus rhythm with pre-excitation (delta waves and a short PR interval). Subsequently, she developed an irregular wide complex tachycardia consistent with atrial fibrillation with pre-excitation (

Task-Dependent Cortical Oscillatory Dynamics in Functional Constipation.

Functional constipation (FC) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder thought to arise from the brain-gut axis dysfunction, yet direct human neurophysiological evidence is lacking. We recorded high-density electroencephalography (EEG) data in 21 FC patients and 37 healthy controls across resting, cognitive, and defecation-related tasks. We observed that FC patients displayed a consistent, task-dependent signature compared with healthy controls. At the regional level, FC patients exhibited increased alpha during both resting and defecation-related tasks, reduced temporal gamma during de

An Explanatory Model of Speech Communication Centered on Multiscale Rhythmic Modulation: Implications for Motor Speech Assessment and Intervention for Individuals With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

PURPOSE: This study proposed an explanatory model of speech communication centered on multiscale rhythmic modulation to inform motor speech assessment and management. To these ends, a fit-for-purpose, automated measurement tool was used to evaluate and/or cross-validate (a) the previously reported effect of a neuromotor disorder-amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-and (b) the effects of two cueing strategies, commonly used in managing motor speech disorders, on rhythmic modulation of speech. METHOD: A secondary analysis was carried out on the X-ray Microbeam database. The analyzed data includ

Elevated gamma band power in humans receiving naloxone suggests dorsal periaqueductal and periventricular gray deep brain stimulation produced analgesia is opioid mediated.

BACKGROUND: The midbrain periaqueductal and periventricular gray (PAVG) region is important for pain and autonomic modulation. We have previously described changes in blood pressure dependent upon dorsal or ventral electrode positioning with PAVG deep brain stimulation (DBS), yet controversy exists about whether DBS acts via endogenous opioid release. METHOD AND RESULTS: We combined local field potential (LFP) recording from PAVG DBS electrodes in humans with naloxone and saline infusions to determine whether dorsal and ventral PAVG DBS act through opioidergic or other mechanisms. Four awake

The increase in longitudinally measured sleepiness across adolescence is related to the maturational decline in low-frequency EEG power.

OBJECTIVES: A changing sleep schedule that reduces sleep duration is thought to produce the increasing daytime sleepiness of adolescents. We tested the hypothesis that adolescent daytime sleepiness also results from adolescent brain maturational processes indexed by declining delta electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. DESIGN: Data are from the first 3 years of a semilongitudinal study of EEG changes in adolescence. All-night EEG was recorded semiannually. SETTING: EEG was recorded with ambulatory recorders in the subjects' homes. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-one subjects were 9 years old (cohort

Sleep microarchitecture as a predictor of recurrence in children and adolescents with depression.

Although polysomnographic abnormalities are prevalent in adults with major depressive disorders (MDD), the findings in children and adolescents have been more equivocal. Polysomnographic measures may be of predictive value in assessing course of illness. The present study used standard sleep measures and temporal coherence of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) rhythms to predict recovery and recurrence in a 1-yr naturalistic follow-up in 47 children and adolescents 8-18 yr of age with MDD. Standard sleep measures did not predict clinical course. On the other hand, temporal coherence measures dis

Cathodal weak direct current decreases epileptic excitability with reduced neuronal activity and enhanced delta oscillations.

Seizures are manifestations of hyperexcitability in the brain. Non-invasive weak current stimulation, delivered through cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS), has emerged to treat refractory epilepsy and seizures, although the cellular-to-populational electrophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Using the ctDCS in vivo model, we investigate how neural excitability is modulated through weak direct currents by analysing the local field potential (LFP) and extracellular unit spike recordings before, during and after ctDCS versus sham stimulation. In rats with kainic acid (KA

Asenapine maleate normalizes low frequency oscillatory deficits in a neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia.

Asenapine maleate (AM) is an atypical antipsychotic that, unlike many other antipsychotics, shows some efficacy in treating cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. Normal cognitive function has long since been associated with high frequency neuronal oscillations. However, recent research has highlighted the potential importance of low frequency oscillations. Here, the impact of AM on low frequency neural oscillatory activity was evaluated in the methylazoxymethanol acetate (MAM) rat model system used for the study schizophrenia, and the oscillatory signatures compared to those of haloperidol (

Association of an Electroencephalography-Based Risk Score With Seizure Probability in Hospitalized Patients.

IMPORTANCE: Continuous electroencephalography (EEG) use in critically ill patients is expanding. There is no validated method to combine risk factors and guide clinicians in assessing seizure risk. OBJECTIVE: To use seizure risk factors from EEG and clinical history to create a simple scoring system associated with the probability of seizures in patients with acute illness. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We used a prospective multicenter (Emory University Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Yale University Hospital) database containing clinical and electrographic variables on 542

A big-world network in ASD: dynamical connectivity analysis reflects a deficit in long-range connections and an excess of short-range connections.

Over the last years, increasing evidence has fuelled the hypothesis that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition of altered brain functional connectivity. The great majority of these empirical studies relies on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) which has a relatively poor temporal resolution. Only a handful of studies has examined networks emerging from dynamic coherence at the millisecond resolution and there are no investigations of coherence at the lowest frequencies in the power spectrum-which has recently been shown to reflect long-range cortico-cortical connections. Here
