Prevalence and distribution of odontogenic cysts in Sicily: 1986-2005.

The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of odontogenic cysts (OCs) in Sicily and evaluate their distribution during a 20-ye … more in male gender, younger age at diagnosis and anterior maxilla as site of presentation. Unlike dentigerous cysts, the frequency of radicular cysts decreased from 10.4% in 1986-1995 to about 8% in 1996-2005 (P < 0.0001). Inflammatory radicular cysts are the most represented group among OCs in our area with a higher prevalence than that reported in other countr …

Ectopic Third Molar in the Mandibular Condyle: An Extraoral Surgical Approach and 10-Year Follow-Up.

This report describes the surgical management and long-term follow-up of a dentigerous cyst associated with an ectopic mandibular third molar located in the condylar process. A 55-year-old female presented with pain, limited mouth opening, and a "cyst near the ear." Imaging revealed a radiolucent lesion in the left mandibular ramus associated with an impacted tooth in the condyle. Histopathologic analysis following incisional biopsy confirmed a dentigerous cyst. Given the lesion size and the inaccessible position of the tooth, surgical excision was performed through a preauricular approach und…

Cholesterol Granuloma in the Maxillary Sinus: A Rare Presentation Associated With an Odontogenic Cyst.

Cholesterol granuloma is a histopathological finding characterized by a mass of connective tissue and granulation tissue. It is primarily observed in the middle ear, mastoid process, or paranasal sinuses, with rare occurrences in the dental odontogenic region. A dentigerous cyst encloses the crown of an unerupted tooth by expanding its follicle and attaches to the neck of the tooth. Here, we report a 63-year-old female who presented to the dental clinic complaining of an ill-fitted denture. A panoramic radiograph showed a well-defined radiolucent lesion in the upper left maxillary sinus with a…

Ectopic tooth in the maxillary sinus diagnosed with an ophthalmic complication.

Ectopic teeth erupt into regions other than the natural position or should be impacted in unusual location. Etiology of these teeth includes trauma, infection, and developmental diseases; however, in many cases, it is idiopathic. In addition, dentigerous cysts that are related with ectopic teeth may also affect adjacent anatomic regions. The occurrence of ophthalmic complications related with ectopic teeth is a rare situation. In this article, we aimed to present a patient who had a blurred vision thought that resulted from the dentigerous cyst associated with the ectopic third molar in the ma…

A lateral periodontal cyst in association with a follicular cyst.

A case is described in which two separate developmental odontogenic cysts were associated with an unerupted lower third molar tooth. Radiological and histological examination showed that these were a lateral periodontal cyst and a follicular (dentigerous) cyst. This unusual occurrence provides substantial evidence that the periodontal cyst may have an origin from the cell rests of Malassez.

Nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in odontogenic cysts and ameloblastomas.

The aim of this study was to determine whether nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) may be of value in distinguishing various odontogenic cysts from the unicystic ameloblastoma. Histological sections were prepared from fifteen cases each of odontogenic keratocyst, residual cyst, dentigerous cyst, unicystic ameloblastoma and conventional ameloblastoma. In each case intra-nuclear AgNOR dots were counted in 100 consecutive basal nuclei. Statistical comparison of the least squares means showed that those areas of unicystic ameloblastomas lined by characteristic epithelium had a significantly lower…

Bilateral Nonsyndromic Cystic Lesions Involving Impacted Teeth: Nomenclature and Diagnostic Protocol.

AIM: To present a brief overview of etiopathogenesis, nomenclature, and treatment modality for a case of nonsyndromic bilateral cysts in the mandible. BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts, though comprise a distinct group of lesions have on and off posed challenges in etiopathogenesis and nomenclature. The prima facia role of development/inflammation in the buildup of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium attached at the cementoenamel junction and the enamel in the pathogenesis of dentigerous cysts has long been discussed. Along with this, the spread of inflammatory exudate from an overlying p…

Some observations on the fluids of odontogenic cysts.

The fluids of 44 dental cysts, 19 dentigerous cysts, 36 odontogenic keratocysts, and 12 ameloblastomas have been investigated. The incidence of epithelial cells, inflammatory cells, cholesterol crystals and bacteria was recorded in smears. There was a high incidence of epithelial cells in odontogenic keratocysts and not in other lesions. Cholesterol crystals had a similar incidence in all lesions. The proportion of the soluble proteins and total protein content was determined from cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Dental cysts contained an average of 51.19% albumin, 17.52% beta globulin, 22.0…

New developments in selected cysts of the jaws.

The number and variety of cysts that occur in the jaws are greater than those in any other part of the body. Consequently, dental practitioners must keep up with advances in this field, including the definition of new entities, such as the glandular odontogenic cyst; the deletion of the old incorrect concept of maxillofacial fissural cysts, including the globulo-maxillary cyst; and the advances in the molecular biology of established cysts, such as the dentigerous cyst and the odontogenic keratocyst.

Myofibroblasts and mast cells: influences on biological behavior of odontogenic lesions.

Odontogenic lesions differ in their rate of recurrence and aggressiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of myofibroblasts and mast cells in odontogenic lesions. Sample consisted of 20 cases each of dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and solid ameloblastomas. Histologic sections were submitted to immunohistochemistry using anti-α-smooth muscle actin and anti-tryptase antibodies. Myofibroblasts and mast cells were counted at ×400 magnification in 5 and 10 fields, respectively. Myofibroblasts were more frequent in ameloblastomas (24.41), followed by odontogenic keratocysts (…

Pattern of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts.

The jaws are host to a variety of cysts due in large part to the tissues involved in tooth formation. Odontogenic cysts (OCs) are unique in … groma. Oral and maxillofacial cysts are not uncommon in this population, the majority being the OC, dentigerous cyst, followed by the nonodontogenic cyst, nasopalatine cyst. The cysts are male predominant and occur 10 to 15 years earlier compared with those in the white population.

Submandibular approach for a deeply ectopic mandibular second premolar: surgical decision-making considerations.

Ectopic teeth are rare entities occurring outside their normal anatomical position, and ectopic mandibular premolars are particularly uncommon. This report describes the management of a deeply ectopic mandibular second premolar located at the inferior border of the mandible. A 16-year-old male patient was referred following incidental radiographic detection. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed buccal cortical perforation and a radiolucent lesion suggestive of a dentigerous cyst. Due to the deep location, limited intraoral access, and proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve, the tooth was r…

P53 protein expression in odontogenic cysts.

p53 protein seems to be related to the suppression of cell proliferation. p53-positive tissues seem to have a higher proliferative activity than p53-negative ones. Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) has a different behavior from other types of cysts because it is more aggressive, with a tendency to recurrence. Twenty-two dentigerous cysts, 24 radicular cysts, and 20 OKCs were used in the present study. Two dentigerous cysts (9.1%), 2 radicular cysts (8.3%), and 9 OKCs (45%) expressed the p53 protein. The differences between the three groups were statistically significant (p = 0.003). In 10 cases of …
