Occlusal characteristics and prevalence of associated dental anomalies in the primary dentition.

INTRODUCTION: Morphological variations in primary dentition are of great concern to a pediatric dentist as it may pose clinical problems like dental caries, delayed exfoliation and also anomalies in the permanent dentition, such as impaction of successors, supernumerary teeth, permanent double teeth or aplasia of teeth. The present study was conducted to investigate the presence of dental anomalies in the primary dentition of 1000 schoolchildren in the 3-5 year-old age group in Faridabad. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-thousand schoolchildren were examined using Type III examination (WHO, 1997) f…

Esthetic and functional rehabilitation for oligodontia in the mixed dentition: case report.

Tooth agenesis can be considered the most common anomaly of craniofacial development in humans, with an estimated prevalence reaching up to 20% worldwide. Treatments for tooth agenesis include orthodontic space closure, use of fixed or removable dentures, and placement of dental implants. Some of these options may not be applicable to children in mixed dentition because they can prevent the normal development of facial bones. A multidisciplinary, staged approach considering the number, size, and development of the remaining teeth in the long term would be the most suitable treatment. The purpo…

Periodontitis as manifestation of Crohn's disease in primary dentition: a case report.

The purpose of this case report is to detail an initial periodontal manifestation of Crohn's disease in a 6-year-old boy. The first clinical diagnosis, localized aggressive periodontitis, was based on the microbiological isolation of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans from subgingival sites. On examination, gingival lesions, together with bleeding on probing, edema, and erythema, were observed. Although an increased probing depth was detected, no radiographically visible alveolar bone loss was observed. According to these findings, periodontitis as a manifestation of a systemic disease was a

Electrocoagulation extends the indication of calcium hydroxide pulpotomy in the primary dentition.

The primary molars received calcium hydroxide pulpotomy with or without the electrocoagulation procedure. Teeth were evaluated clinically and radiographically at 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment. There was no statistically significant difference in success rate between calcium hydroxide pulpotomies, with and without the electrocoagulation procedure, either clinically or radiographically. These results indicate that a pulpotomy with calcium hydroxide is an effective treatment for cariously exposed pulp in primary molars and electrocoagulation can extend its indication.

Prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of numeric anomalies in the permanent dentition of patients with Down syndrome by means of panoramic radiographs. The sample consisted of panoramic radiographs from 70 subjects. We examined the radiographs to detect hypodontia as well as supernumerary teeth. Our results confirm the high prevalence of hypodontia among patients with Down syndrome (60%), mostly with mild expression. The teeth most often missing were the upper lateral incisors, usually bilaterally, followed by the lower second premolars and upper second premolars. Supernumer…

Predicting pulpectomy success and its relationship to exfoliation and succedaneous dentition.

This study evaluated factors that affected pulpectomy (PE) success and its effect on the succedaneous tooth's eruption and enamel formation. Sixty-five of 250 patients with PEs met the selection criteria and yielded 81 zinc oxide-eugenol PEs (30 incisors, 51 molars) followed a mean time of 90.8 months. Overall PE success was 77.7% with no difference between molars and incisors (P = 0.53). Enamel defects were observed in 18.7% of succedaneous teeth and were related (P = 0.005) to the pre-existing infection causing excess root resorption (>1 mm preoperative root resorption = 44.4% defects) but w

[Tooth eruption in Jena children in the first phase of mixed dentition].

Based on the process of tooth eruption in children of Jena during the first period of erupting permanent teeth secular changes of the dentition were investigated and the topicality of the current tables for dental age were checked. Mean age of eruption was computed for the individual types of teeth and for each sex in Jena's children and curves for eruption were constructed. On this basis population-specific standards for the dental age were calculated and the children were subdivided into "late, normal or early teether". By comparing the methods for age estimation using the number of teeth or…

Developmental disturbances of permanent teeth following trauma to the primary dentition.

The topographic relationship of the apices of the primary teeth to the permanent tooth germs explains the potential for possible developmental disturbances of the permanent teeth after injuries to their predecessors. The anatomical, histologic and clinical aspects of permanent tooth malformation following trauma to the primary teeth are described. One hundred and fourteen children with originally 255 traumatized primary teeth have been re-examined (with an average period of 5.1 years after the trauma) to assess any developmental disturbances of the corresponding permanent teeth. Twenty-three p
