Congenital absence of permanent teeth in a six-generation Chinese kindred.

We report on rare, heritable, permanent tooth agenesis in a large Chinese kindred. The congenital absence of permanent teeth except the first and second accessory teeth was observed in 52 individuals through six successive generations in the kindred comprising 328 members. Clinical assessments were carried out, and inheritance mode and spousal influence of the anomaly on their offspring were analyzed. Consequently, the anomaly was transmitted in an autosomal dominant fashion with incomplete penetrance (P = 0.88), and no significant clinical manifestations other than the oligodontia were found.

Regional odontodysplasia with facial cellulitis: a case report and literature review.

Regional odontodysplasia (ROD) is a localized developmental anomaly involving deciduous and permanent dentition, with a significant impact on patients. The affected teeth display unique ghost-like radiological characteristics, clinically manifesting as delayed tooth eruption, abnormal tooth morphology, and recurrent swelling of gingiva. In this paper, we report a case of a 2-year-old patient with ROD whose chief complaint was facial cellulitis. We analyze the medical history, clinical examination, radiographic findings, and histologic findings, and review the pathological features, pathogenesi

Review on fluoride varnishes currently recommended in dental prophylaxis.

In dentistry, fluoride compounds play a very important role in the development of teeth hard tissue. They have been modifying the development of the carious process for many years in accordance with the principles of minimally invasive therapy. Studies have confirmed their effectiveness in the prevention and treatment of carious lesions and erosion of deciduous and permanent teeth, as well as in the dentin hypersensitivity treatment. Typically, each varnish consists of 3 basic components, i.e., a resin usually in the form of mastic, shellac and/or rosin, an alcohol-based organic solvent (usual

Consecutive tooth agenesis patterns in non-syndromic oligodontia.

Agenesis of two or more consecutive adjacent permanent teeth (consecutive tooth agenesis, CTA) is a serious manifestation of oligodontia requiring long-term, multi-disciplinary treatment. Therefore, the present study investigated the characteristics of the CTA pattern in orthodontic patients with non-syndromic oligodontia. Using panoramic radiographs, the number of agenetic permanent teeth excluding third molars in non-syndromic orthodontic patients was evaluated, and patients with six or more agenetic teeth (oligodontia group, n = 97) and with one to five agenetic teeth (hypodontia group, n =

Effect of Tooth Agenesis on Mandibular Morphology and Position.

Congenital missing teeth (OMIM #106600) is the most common dental abnormality. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of tooth agenesis on the total mandibular length, length of the mandibular body and alveolar process, and the mandibular anteroposterior position. The material was obtained from the Department of Orthodontics, Medical University of Warsaw. The study group included 116 patients aged 9-18 years with a congenital absence of at least two permanent tooth buds in the maxilla and/or mandible (mean: 6.2 teeth missing/patient). All patients were Caucasians: 68 (59%) females an

Ultrasonic versus hand instrumentation for orthograde root canal treatment of permanent teeth.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment of root canals or root canal treatment is a frequently performed dental procedure and is carried out on teeth in which irreversible pulpitis has led to necrosis (death) of the dental pulp (nerve). Removal of the necrotic tissue remnants and cleaning and shaping of the root canal are important phases of root canal treatment. Treatment options include the use of hand and rotary instruments and methods using ultrasonic or sonic equipment. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this review were to determine the relative clinical effectiveness of ultrasonic versus hand inst

Supplemental permanent maxillary canines: report of two rare bilateral cases.

Supernumerary teeth in the permanent maxillary canine areas are uncommon, and are usually in the form of small conical-shaped teeth. Only a few reports of supplemental maxillary canines have been published in the literature, and most relate to unilateral cases. Bilateral occurrence of such supplemental teeth in non-syndromic patients has been reported to be extremely rare. This article reports two cases of bilateral supplemental permanent maxillary canines in children with no associated syndrome.

[Structure of the dog periodontium during milk and permanent occlusion].

The state of dog parodont during milk and permanent occlusion was studied by morphological methods in 8 animals. It was established that the structure of parodont of milk and permanent teeth has features characteristic for each type of occlusion. One of the important distinctions of parodont structure during milk occlusion is the presence of osteoclasts especially in the sites of root resorption. Close attachment of roots of milk teeth to follicles of permanent teeth should be taken into consideration in orthodontic correction of milk tooth position.

Mandibular talon cusp: report of two rare cases.

Two rare cases of talon cusps in the mandibular incisors were observed during a prevalence study on talon cusp. One of them was seen on a mandibular primary lateral incisor. The other one was observed on the mandibular left permanent central incisor, and the right mandibular permanent central incisor was congenitally missing. There were no associated developmental syndromes with either of the cases reported. Of the 4770 children examined, nine cases had talon cusp with only two rare cases of mandibular talon cusp, one in the primary dentition and the other in the permanent dentition.

[Recognizing and preventing disturbances in eruption].

Disturbances in eruption and related problems are quite common in permanent dentition but rare in deciduous dentition. For the timely recognition of disturbances in eruption, knowledge of the normal development of dentition is essential. Disturbances in eruption comprise disturbances in which eruption does not occur at all, in which it is delayed or incomplete, or in which the normal direction of eruption is influenced. If identified early enough, many undesirable dental conditions can be avoided or their seriousness can be limited. A possible impacting of permanent cuspids, for example, can b

Development of Yorkshire Terrier Dentition.

The development of dentition in dogs has been associated with several problems including tooth over-crowding, missing permanent dentition, and persistent deciduous teeth (PDT). Information on dentition development in different breeds is lacking. This study of 61 Yorkshire terriers aimed to determine the (i) average age at deciduous tooth exfoliation, (ii) average age at permanent tooth eruption, (iii) PDT incidence, and influencing factors such as body weight. The ages of exfoliation of deciduous teeth and eruption of permanent dentition were influenced by body weight and tooth type. These den

Use of the passive lower lingual arch in the management of anterior mandibular crowding in the mixed dentition.

Leeway space preservation in the mixed dentition is a well-documented method of space management. In the mandibular arch it may be saved for utilisation in the correction of minor anterior crowding by the placement of a passive lower lingual arch (LLA) during the transition from the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition.

Bilateral symmetrical hyperdontia--a case report.

Supernumerary teeth is a term that describes the presence of additional teeth beyond the normal complement. Supernumerary teeth have been reported in both the primary and permanent dentition, although they are more prevalent in the permanent dentition. Bilateral symmetrical impacted fourth molars are exceedingly uncommon, especially in combination with other supernumerary teeth. This article describes an unusual case of hyperdontia and highlights the importance of correct diagnosis and treatment.
