OBJECTIVE: The results of the scant research on laxative abuse among women with eating disorders suggest that laxative abuse is a diagnostic indicator of greater psychopathology. We further investigated the relationship of history of laxative abuse to eating and related attitudes, impulsivity, and personality pathology.
METHOD: Women assessed in an outpatient clinical setting and diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, binge-eating/purging type (n = 51) or bulimia nervosa, purging type (n = 280) completed measures of laxative abuse, eating and related attitudes, and personality psychopathology at in

This study compared depressed cocaine dependent patients (CD, N=50) with patients who were cocaine dependent only (CO, N=101) on pre-treatment psychiatric symptomatology, substance use, and psychosocial functioning. Results indicated that the CD group had more overall distress and poorer psychiatric functioning than the CO group. CD individuals scored higher on all subscales of the SCL-90-R, had a higher prevalence of antisocial personality disorder, reported higher craving for cocaine, lower self-efficacy to refrain from drug use, and lower perceived social support. These findings support the

The growing body of evidence on the dimensional classification of personality disorders (PD) has resulted in its acceptance in the ICD-11 classification, which abolished categories and retains only a general description of PD. Specifying the type of PD is optional, and the suggested domains represent maladaptive variants of the five-factor model of personality (FFM). The aim of our study was to explore the existence of a joint structure between maladaptive and normal personality traits, and to investigate how these structures are integrated. The study included 223 patients who had been diagnos

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious and relatively common mental disorder causing a high burden of suffering. Whereas evidence-based treatments are available, dropout and non-response rates remain high. PTSD and Cluster C personality disorders (avoidant, dependent or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder; CPD) are highly comorbid and there is evidence for suboptimal treatment effects in this subgroup of patients. An integrated PTSD and CPD treatment may be needed to increase treatment efficacy. However, no studies directly comparing the efficacy of regular PTSD tr

OBJECTIVES: This article is a review of psychotherapies for patients suffering from dependent personality and interpersonal dependency.
METHOD: We synthesized articles making reference to this question, notably those written by Bornstein, author who refers to the dependent personality. We highlighted the psychotherapies that have been the object of an evaluation. The research on the subject is sparse: only eight studies permitting assessment of psychotherapies in this indication in 2005. Besides these psychotherapies, we detailed other approaches which are used by practitioners in these indic

Mentally disordered offenders may be convicted to court-ordered psychiatric-psychotherapeutic inpatient care. Based on the concept of a forensic therapeutic community, the treatments of 204 inmates of a medium-security hospital, who presented with psychosis, personality disorders or substance-use disorders, have been assessed. After a median stay of 2.5 years, 56% of the offenders had been transferred to a sheltered educational housing or to an open low-security psychiatric ward. Length of stay was independent of psychiatric diagnosis, yet dependent on the nature of the offense. Having a clust

The sample consisted of 125 male inpatients admitted to one of two substance abuse treatment centers in Iowa. They were diagnosed by means of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule Screening Interview-Quick-DIS version, the Structural Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorder (PD), revised, and the Substance Abuse Reporting System. The most frequently diagnosed comorbid Axis I conditions were anxiety and mood disorders, while the most frequently observed Axis II disorders were in Cluster B, borderline PD, and antisocial PD followed by Cluster C, avoidant PD, passive-aggressive PD and obsessive-c

OBJECTIVES: To examine the contribution of varying levels of dependency to Axis I and Axis II disorders, and to the recurrence of major depression in a graduate student sample diagnosed with a history of the disorder.
METHODS: At Time 1, participants were interviewed to confirm a current or past episode of major depression along with the presence of Axis II and other current or past Axis I disorders. Various measures of dependency were administered including the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (DEQ; Blatt, D'Afflitti, & Quinlan, 1976), the 3-Vector Dependency Inventory (3VDI; Pincus & Gu

BACKGROUND: Although high prevalence rates of psychiatric comorbidity were reported in alcoholism, there is a lack of studies covering the whole spectrum of DSM Axes I and II disorders. The relation of comorbid psychopathology and Cloninger's and Babor's types of alcoholism still remained unclear.
METHODS: Psychiatric comorbidity in 250 hospitalized alcohol-dependent patients without additional substance-related disorders was assessed by the Composite International Diagnostic Interview and the International Personality Disorder Examination. Information about the course and severity of alcohol

OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinical characteristics and associations of polydrug abuse among heroin-dependent patients in compulsory isolation settings in China.
METHODS: Structured interviews were conducted in 882 heroin-dependent patients in two compulsory isolation settings in Changsha, China. Descriptive statistics were employed to report prevalence and general information of polydrug abuse among the participants. Bivariate associations were examined between polydrug abuse and variables regarding demographics, heroin use profile and psychopathology. Multivariate logistic regressions were c

The classical notion of neurosis as the prototypical form of nonpsychotic personality disturbance must be rejected in favor of the categories of (a) personality pattern disturbance and disorder of life style, and most especially, (b) character disorder. Category (a) would include schizoid, paranoid, and cyclothymic personality pattern disturbances and compulsive and hysteroid personality as disorders of life style. Each of these would occupy one end of a 'psychotoid' continuum, at the other end of which would be a familiar type of psychosis such as paranoid schizophrenia or pseudoneurotic schi

BACKGROUND: Drug abuse is usually associated with behavioral disorders in children especially conduct disorder. This study investigated the behavioral disorders of children whose parents were opium or heroin dependent in compare with children whose parents were non-addicts to find the effects of drug abuse on offspring's behavior disorders by adjusting intervening factors.
METHODS: This case-control study, compared the behavioral disorders of 128 students (aged 8 to 14 years) in two groups of opium or heroin dependent parents and non-dependent parents (n = 64 in both groups) using Child Behav

BACKGROUND: Research investigating executive functions in opioid-dependent patients undergoing opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) is scarce. This study aimed to assess executive function in patients with opioid use disorder at treatment initiation and one-year follow-up, exploring its correlation with psychiatric comorbidity within the patient group. Additionally, associations between executive functions and factors such as age at substance use initiation, duration of substance use, and current substance use were explored.
METHODS: Forty-nine adults (mean age: 40.6 [11.4]) with opioid use dis

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, smoking has become an increasingly non-normative behavior. Because deviant behaviors are associated with greater clinical and genetic risks, current-generation smokers may have greater concentrations of psychiatric comorbidity than previous generations. We examined this question empirically by testing whether associations between measures of smoking, psychiatric diagnoses, and risk-associated personality traits, increased across seven birth-cohorts of the 20th century.

BACKGROUND: Major psychiatric disorders have been conceptualized to comprise of two dimensions namely, the internalizing and externalizing spectrum. Externalizing spectrum disorders consist of childhood disruptive behaviour disorders (DBD), antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and substance use disorders. They are supposed to share common underlying personality traits. However, there is a need to explore the underlying dimensionality of externalizing spectrum of both disorders and traits in a mixed clinical and nonclinical sample from a non-western cultural-ethnic backdrop.

OBJECTIVE: To identify which clinical features and personality traits are associated with quality of life (QoL) in panic disorder (PD) patients.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with PD patients. The brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) and the Big Five Inventory (BFI) were used to assess QoL and personality traits respectively. The strength of correlations was measured with Pearson's, Spearman's, and point-biserial correlation coefficients. We also performed multiple linear regressions, considering sociodemographic data and score

The aim of this study was to provide data on the preliminary validation of a clinician-report multidimensional assessment measure of mentalization (Mentalization Imbalances Scale, MIS). A random national sample of psychotherapists (N=190) completed the MIS to identify mentalization imbalances, and the Personality Disorder Checklist to assess the personality disorders (PDs) of randomly selected patients currently in their care. Factor analysis confirmed the presence of six factors that represented different imbalances of mentalization: cognitive, affective, automatic, external, imbalance toward
