BACKGROUND: Tetraglycidyl-4,4'-methylenedianiline (TGMDA) is an aniline epoxy resin used in, for example, resin systems of pre-impregnated composite materials (prepregs) of the aircraft industry. Allergic contact dermatitis caused by TGMDA in prepregs has been described previously.
OBJECTIVES: To report on 9 patients with occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by TGMDA in epoxy glues used in helicopter assembly.
METHODS: The patients were examined with patch testing at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in 2004-2009. The first patient was diagnosed by testing both componen

BACKGROUND: Thailand, an agricultural country developing into an industrial country, has diferences in work environment, substance exposure, and climate. These factors may lead to a distinct epidemiology of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD).
OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of allergic and irritant occupational contact dermatitis in Thailand.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The records of patients diagnosed of OCD and patch tested between 2006 and 2010 at Siriraj University Hospital were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: From 885patch tested patients, 194 (21.9%) had OCD. Of those 194 patients,

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate sensitization to chemicals present in work environment after an outbreak of contact dermatitis in workers of vehicle equipment factory, exposed to polyurethane foam, based on 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From among 300 employees, 21 individuals reporting work-related skin and/or respiratory tract symptoms underwent clinical examination, patch testing, skin prick tests, spirometry and MDI sIgE measurement in serum. Patch tests included isocyanates series, selected rubber additives, metals, fragrances, preservatives, and an antiadhesive

Persistent post-occupational dermatitis is a rare variant of occupational eczemas characterized by skin symptoms which persist after the elimination of occupational allergens. Further diagnostic criteria are the followings: absence of dermatitis in past history of patients, presentation confined to both hands almost exclusively, and causal role of occupational allergens with both irritative and allergic origins is confirmed. The author presents a case which meets all these diagnostic criteria. Epidemiology of occupational dermatoses, impact on quality of life and social-economic aspects are al

BACKGROUND: Occupational skin diseases, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), irritant contact dermatitis, and allergic contact urticaria (ACU), occur commonly among health care workers (HCWs).
PURPOSE: To evaluate the aetiology of the various skin diseases afflicting HCWs evaluated for suspicion of ACD and/or ACU and to identify the most common allergens among HCWs found to have ACD and/or ACU.
METHODS: A total of 1434 patients underwent patch testing. The demographic data and most common allergens for HCWs (n = 100) and non-HCWS (n = 1334) were compared.
RESULTS: HCWs were statisti

2-N-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (OIT) is an antimicrobial agent that is mainly used in industrial settings. The objective of the study was to find the significance of OIT contact allergy at our clinic of occupational dermatology. We looked through our patient material from 1991 for allergic reactions to OIT and analysed the clinical records. We found 8 patients with ordinary allergic reactions to OIT and 1 late reaction. 2 workers in the manufacture of paints had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from OIT in biocides. 2 patients were machinists and 3 were female farmers: in these cases,

This study was conducted to 1) evaluate the personal selection and use of protective gloves against bloodborne pathogens and management of glove selection in the workplace, 2) survey the experience with occupational dermatitis and other allergic symptoms, 3) explore the relationships between occupational dermatitis experience and glove use, and 4) determine the impact of glove selection upon occupational dermatitis among midwives. Subjects were 1,150 midwives working in Japan. Participants were selected from the members of Japanese Nursing Association and 835 responded to the survey. More than

Para-tertiary-butylcatechol (PTBC) is a rare allergen which is used in the rubber, paint and petroleum industries. We present 9 patients who were sensitized to PTBC and examined at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) between 1974 and 1995. 3 of the patients had been exposed to PTBC in their work. 2 of them also had allergic reactions to para-tertiary-butylphenol (PTBP)-formaldehyde resin and to PTBP. 5 of the patients became sensitized to PTBC from patch testing. PTBC was found to be one of the most common causes of active sensitization in our clinic. Accordingly, at the FIOH,

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of contact dermatitis after deliveries in cattle or sheep among veterinarians.
DESIGN: Retrospective.
SETTING: Provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe, The Netherlands.
METHODS: By means of a short inquiry 31O veterinarians were asked whether and how often they had experienced pustular dermatitis after deliveries in cattle and sheep and what course the dermatitis had run. They were also asked about details of the deliveries (type of animal, condition of the foetus, course of the partus), about microbiological investigation, preventive measurements a

Polyfunctional aziridine (PFA) is increasingly used as a water-based cross-linker in 2-component paints, paint primers, lacquers, topcoats and other protective coatings. The cross-linker (PFA hardener) is made by reacting multifunctional acrylic monomer with a highly reactive aziridine compound. During 1992-1993, we came across 2 patients with allergic patch test reactions provoked by PFA hardener. One of the patients was a parquet layer, and the other a printer. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) was diagnosed by positive allergic patch test reactions to PFA hardener in a dilution series in pe

A population-based study was performed to investigate incidence rates of occupational skin disease (OSD) in bakers, confectioners and cooks, as well as the rôle of endogenous and exogenous risk factors. In North Bavaria, all closed cases of OSD were recorded systematically in a 3-year period and the total number of employees in the food industry was known over the same period of time. Incidence rates of OSD and relative risks of atopic skin diathesis (AD) and respiratory atopy (RA) were calculated. The overall incidence rate (I) of OSD (in 3 years per 10.000 employees) was 67 (95% CI 58;76) in

Codiaeum variegatum is a plant that has a rather strong sensitizing capacity as appeared from an examination in a large nursery of so called Crotons. Rather striking were two positive reactions to Aeschynantus pulcher (family: Gesneriaceae), It is not sure if Aeschynantus really has sensitizing properties. More investigations about handeczema caused by contact with Aeschynantus has to be performed.
