Continuing Education Needs of Music Therapists: Views of Practitioners From Developing Countries.

Continuing education is important to enhance the efficacy and effectiveness of music therapy practice. Literature on continuing education needs of music therapists in developing country contexts in particular, is needed. This article reports a cross-sectional survey of music therapists' perspectives from select developing countries to explore their continuing education needs. Music therapists (N = 331) were recruited from six developing countries. One online questionnaire was used with open-ended questions on what they seek in terms of on-the-job professional development and continuing educati

Big data and personal information privacy in developing countries: insights from Kenya.

The present study examined the correlation between big data and personal information privacy in Kenya, a developing nation which has experienced a significant rise in utilization of data in the recent past. The study sought to assess the effectiveness of present data protection laws and policies, highlight challenges that individuals and organizations experience while securing their data, and propose mechanisms to enhance data protection frameworks and raise public awareness of data privacy issues. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, which included a survey of 500 participants, 20 int

Understanding education policy preferences: Survey experiments with policymakers in 35 developing countries.

Despite rapid increases in global access to primary school, average learning outcomes in many low and middle income countries remain low. International actors are increasingly focused on a policy agenda prioritizing foundational learning, measured by test scores in primary school. However, international actors have limited capacity to impose this agenda, which ultimately depends on national decision-makers. In this paper we present new evidence on the priorities and views of these national decision-makers. We report on a new survey of 931 senior government officials working on education in 35

HIVAC (HIV-associated cardiomyopathy): An overlooked complication of HIV in developing countries.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Early initiation of anti-retroviral treatment and prompt management of heart failure in a AIDS patient is crucial. If resources available endomyocardial biopsy can guide the future management. ABSTRACT: HIV-associated cardiomyopathy (HIVAC) is a serious complication of HIV with poorly understood pathology. Systolic dysfunction was a common characteristic of HIVAC which is now replaced as diastolic dysfunction due to the availability of ART. There are various etiologies of HIVAC depending on the degree of viral replication, immune response, availability of ART, and also t

Spreading the Wealth: Developing Assessments of Cognitive Abilities in Non-WEIRD Countries.

In this brief essay I reminisce on the ideas I encountered in Lev Vygotsky's lectures on pedology as an undergraduate student at Moscow State University in the USSR. Some of these ideas have been reliably stored in my professional memory and have influenced how my colleagues and I have approached the assessment of IQ (or general cognitive abilities) in countries other than the ones in which they were developed. Whereas the essay is autobiographical in nature, it attempts to make a generalizable point that spreading the wealth of existing knowledge, principles, and practice is as central to the

Strategies to Improve Antimicrobial Utilization with a Special Focus on Developing Countries.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a high priority across countries as it increases morbidity, mortality and costs. Concerns with AMR have resulted in multiple initiatives internationally, nationally and regionally to enhance appropriate antibiotic utilization across sectors to reduce AMR, with the overuse of antibiotics exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Effectively tackling AMR is crucial for all countries. Principally a narrative review of ongoing activities across sectors was undertaken to improve antimicrobial use and address issues with vaccines including COVID-19. Point prevalence sur

Retinopathy of Prematurity: How to Prevent the Third Epidemics in Developing Countries.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is vasoproliferative disease affecting preterm infants and is a leading cause of avoidable childhood blindness worldwide. The world is currently experiencing the third epidemic of ROP, where majority of the cases are from middle-income countries. Over 40% of the world's premature infants were born in India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Together with other neighboring nations, this region has unique challenges in ROP management. Key aspects of the challenges including heavier and more mature infants developing severe ROP. Current strategies includ

Urological infections in the developing world: an increasing problem in developed countries.

PURPOSE: Infectious diseases that often follow geographical distribution patterns are increasingly crossing such boundaries, aided by human travel and commerce. These pose a new challenge to physicians who are required to diagnose previously unseen conditions and address drug-resistant organisms. We review some such common infections. METHODS: A literature review was performed for six common urological infections and a narrative review based on recent publications on these infections was compiled. RESULTS: In Urology, some infections that are now crossing geographical boundaries include Bruc

Analysis of Factors Contributing to the Spread of Cholera in Developing Countries.

OBJECTIVE: Cholera has been endemic in Nigeria since the 1970s and has resulted in several early deaths, which probably could have been avoided. This study examined the various factors that contribute to the infection and spread of cholera in Benue State, Nigeria, from 2008 to 2017. We also proposed a cloud based health management system (CBHMS) for the timely identification and management of cholera in an epidemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cluster random sampling in the form of a close ended questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 420 participants comprising farmers, traders,

Epidemiology of otitis media in children from developing countries: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review examined the epidemiology of otitis media (OM) in children <6 years within 90 developing and newly industrialised countries. METHODS: Literature searches (1992-2011), based on MEDLINE, EMBASE, WHO, Index Medicus, country-specific websites, conferences, and the reference lists of included studies, yielded 11,413 records; 59 of 344 studies analysed were included in this review. RESULTS: The majority of the identified studies provided only a single timepoint for OM. In children <6 years of age, OM prevalence was found to be 9.2% in Nigeria, 10% in Egypt, 6.7% i

Single-port laparoscopic surgery in children: A new alternative in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is a technique in laparoscopic surgery, which is based on the idea that all the laparoscopic trocars are inserted through a single umbilical incision. This paper documents a single-centre experience, which performed the single-port surgery in children using an improvised trans-umbilical glove-port with conventional rigid instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied the outcomes of SILS procedures between January 2013 and June 2014. Materials required making our homemade trans-umbilical port consisted on: A flexible ring,

Infectious cause of death determination using minimally invasive autopsies in developing countries.

In developing countries, the knowledge of the microorganisms causing fatal infections is critical and could help designing and implementing more effective preventive interventions and treatment guidelines. We aimed to develop and validate protocols for microbiological analysis in post-mortem samples obtained during minimally invasive autopsy (MIA) procedures and to assess their performance. Thirty MIAs performed in adults at Maputo Central Hospital in Southern Mozambique were included in the analysis. Microbiological tests included a universal screening for HIV, hepatitis B and C viruses, Plas

Trend of human rabies prophylaxis in developing countries: toward optimal rabies immunization.

Rabies is a fatal infectious disease. Because prevention is the key management for rabies, many vaccination regimens have been developed and used worldwide. The aims for developing rabies vaccination regimens include decreasing the number and amount of dosages, decreasing the duration and the number of clinical visits, and reducing cost. Interestingly, some intradermal (ID) regimens have proved to be as effective as the standard intramuscular (IM) regimens, and have been increasingly used in developing countries because they are less expensive. In this article, we reviewed rabies vaccines base

Variation in reported neonatal group B streptococcal disease incidence in developing countries.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis in developed countries. Its burden in the developing world is less clear. Studies reporting neonatal GBS disease incidence from developing countries were identified from 5 literature databases. Studies were assessed with respect to case finding and culture methods. Only 20 studies were identified. The GBS incidence ranged 0-3.06 per 1000 live births with variation within and between geographic regions. All but 1 study identified GBS cases within a hospital setting, despite the potential for births in the community. Possible case
