The contribution of diffusion tensor imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy for the differentiation of breast lesions at 3T.

BACKGROUND: Conventional breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including dynamic contrast-enhanced MR mammography (DCE-MRM), may lead to ambiguous diagnosis and unnecessary biopsies. PURPOSE: To investigate the contribution of proton MR spectroscopy (1H-MRS) combined with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics in the discrimination between benign and malignant breast lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-one women with known breast abnormalities from conventional imaging were examined on a 3T MR scanner. DTI was performed during breast MRI, and fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffu

Primary diffuse large B-cell testicular lymphoma: magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Testicular lymphoma represents the commonest testicular malignancy in men older than 50 years. MR imaging of the scrotum is an efficient supplemental diagnostic tool in the evaluation of scrotal diseases. We report two cases of primary diffuse large B-cell testicular lymphoma, presented in men over the age of 50 years. MR imaging revealed the presence of a hypointense intratesticular mass lesion on T2-weighted images, strongly and heterogeneously enhancing after gadolinium administration.

Apparent Fibre Density: a novel measure for the analysis of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance images.

This article proposes a new measure called Apparent Fibre Density (AFD) for the analysis of high angular resolution diffusion-weighted images using higher-order information provided by fibre orientation distributions (FODs) computed using spherical deconvolution. AFD has the potential to provide specific information regarding differences between populations by identifying not only the location, but also the orientations along which differences exist. In this work, analytical and numerical Monte-Carlo simulations are used to support the use of the FOD amplitude as a quantitative measure (i.e. A

Interpretation of magnetic resonance images in diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma: a survey of pediatric neurosurgeons.

OBJECT: The current management paradigm for children with newly diagnosed diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is to establish a diagnosis and begin therapy based on MR imaging findings correlated with an appropriate clinical presentation, and without a tissue diagnosis. This strategy assumes that pediatric neurosurgeons and neurooncologists uniformly interpret MR imaging findings in this population. This study sought to examine the consistency of North American pediatric neurosurgeons in assessing MR images in this patient population, and in their surgical plans based on the interpretation

Diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging of the evolution of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in the neonatal rabbit.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can result from neonatal asphyxia, the pathophysiology of which is poorly understood. We studied the acute evolution of this disease, using magnetic resonance imaging in an established animal model. HIE was induced in neonatal rabbits by a combination of common carotid artery (CCA) ligation and hypoxia. Serial diffusion and perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance images were acquired before, during, and after the hypoxic interval. Focal areas of decreased apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were detected initially in the cortex ipsilateral to CCA ligation w

Homonymous Visual Field Loss without Structural Lesion on Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Documented with Positron Emission Tomography and Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

The authors describe a 35-year-old man suffering from homonymous hemianopia after head trauma 4 years before but with negative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. Brain fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18FDG-PET) showed hypometabolism at the unilateral occipital lobe and crossed cerebellar hemisphere, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) revealed that the ipsilateral optic radiations were completely interrupted. The crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) observed in the chronic stage of brain damage was caused by cerebellar suppression of the cerebral blood flow d

A magnetic resonance imaging diagnostic dilemma: diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma versus Coats' disease.

A 6-year-old boy presented with neovascular glaucoma secondary to total retinal detachment. Magnetic resonance imaging findings suggested diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma. Enucleation was subsequently performed and led to a final histopathological diagnosis of advanced Coats' disease. Diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma and advanced Coats' disease can be indistinguishable from each other on magnetic resonance imaging.

Diffuse cavernous haemangioma of colon: magnetic resonance imaging features. Report of two cases.

Large bowel haemangiomas are rare but can cause significant morbidity. The clinical features are non-specific, and misdiagnosis is very common. Non-invasive imaging is very useful in the diagnosis and management of this condition. Magnetic resonance imaging surpasses all other imaging modalities, as it is most specific and depicts the extent of the lesion accurately. Two cases of cavernous haemangioma of the rectum are presented highlighting the MRI features.

Classification method based on surf and sift features for alzheimer diagnosis using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common dementia in the elderly, poses a challenge for early diagnosis due to its progressive nature and hidden microstructural changes. While traditional T1 and T2 weighted MRI can assess macro-structural brain atrophy, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) unveils these hidden microstructural alterations. This study explores the use of DTI data, specifically visual patterns in Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), and Radial Diffusivity (RD) maps, to characterize AD progression. This paper proposes a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) framework employing S

Phenotyping hypertrophic cardiomyopathy using cardiac diffusion magnetic resonance imaging: the relationship between microvascular dysfunction and microstructural changes.

AIMS: Microvascular dysfunction in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is predictive of clinical decline, however underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Cardiac diffusion tensor imaging (cDTI) allows in vivo characterization of myocardial microstructure by quantifying mean diffusivity (MD), fractional anisotropy (FA) of diffusion, and secondary eigenvector angle (E2A). In this cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) study, we examine associations between perfusion and cDTI parameters to understand the sequence of pathophysiology and the interrelation between vascular function and underlying microstructu

A Method for the Prediction of Clinical Outcome Using Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Application on Parkinson's Disease.

Robust early prediction of clinical outcomes in Parkinson's disease (PD) is paramount for implementing appropriate management interventions. We propose a method that uses the baseline MRI, measuring diffusion parameters from multiple parcellated brain regions, to predict the 2-year clinical outcome in Parkinson's disease. Diffusion tensor imaging was obtained from 82 patients (males/females = 45/37, mean age: 60.9 ± 7.3 years, baseline and after 23.7 ± 0.7 months) using a 3T MR scanner, which was normalized and parcellated according to the Automated Anatomical Labelling template. All patients

Serial Diffusion Kurtosis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study during Acute, Subacute, and Recovery Periods after Sport-Related Concussion.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is common in contact sports, but there remains a lack of reliable, unbiased biomarkers of brain injury and recovery. Although the symptoms of SRC generally resolve over a period of days to weeks, the lack of a biomarker impairs detection and return-to-play decisions. To this date, the pathophysiological recovery profile and relationships between brain changes and symptoms remained unclear. In the current study, diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) was used to monitor the effects of SRC on the brain and the trajectory of recovery in concussed American football players
