BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) offers a comprehensive examination of the gastrointestinal tract, yet its diagnostic and therapeutic success is dependent on adequate bowel preparation. Current methods for assessing preparation quality are subjective and limited to specific gastrointestinal segments. Although prior research explored artificial intelligence models for colon preparation classification, this study aimed to develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) for automatic evaluation of bowel cleanliness in DAE, addressing both small bowel and colon cleansing.

Background and study aims Diagnostic yields of small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) and device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) are known to be similar. SBCE is normally recommended as the initial diagnostic test, with DAE reserved for therapeutic indications. As most DAE procedures are not pan-enteric, a completion capsule may be of benefit to identify residual or overlooked disease. Our aim was to assess the clinical utility of completion SBCE performed following DAE. Patients and methods A retrospective analysis of completion capsules post double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) from a single referral c

Capsule Endoscopy (CE) is a recently developed noninvasive technique for imaging of small bowel pathologies. It is a swallowable wireless mini-camera for getting images of the gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa. General indications of CE are obscure bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, Crohn disease, abdominal pain, polyposis coli, celiac disease and small bowel tumors. Obstruction must be excluded with small bowel radiography before using CE. Bowel preparation can be recommended for good visualization. The main indication is obscure GI bleeding. Even though useful for the other indications in selected

A seventy-year-old male presented with severe myasthenia gravis and an episode of obscure bleeding. There was a history of gastric ulcer leading to Billroth II surgery twenty-five years ago. Upper endoscopy revealed no pathology. Colonoscopy showed a few solitary diverticula and traces of old blood in the terminal ileum. Capsule endoscopy pictured red smear in the upper jejunum. Diverticula were seen as well. Suspecting bleeding jejunal diverticulosis double balloon enteroscopy was performed. The complete jejunal ascending loop and about 100 cm of the jejunum through the descending jejunal loo

Coeliac disease (CD) is a gluten-responsive, chronic inflammatory enteropathy that shares many features with classical autoimmune diseases. Coeliac disease affects about 1-2% of Caucasians, North Africans and Asians who possess the necessary susceptibility genes encoding HLA DQ2 or HLA DQ8. It is not only unique among the autoimmune diseases in that the precise trigger (gluten from wheat, rye and barley) has been identified, but also in that it has lent itself well to advancements in endoscopic imaging. Since its introduction, flexible endoscopy has allowed tissue to be collected from the smal

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) has proven to be a relatively safe method for small-bowel evaluation, with a complication rate of 1 %. The main concern after diagnostic DBE is acute pancreatitis. Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) has emerged as a viable alternative to DBE. Until now, no incidence of pancreatitis has been reported for SBE. The aims were to evaluate complication rate and occurrence of hyperamylasemia and to identify the risk factors for hyperamylasemia after SBE.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prospectively, consecutive patients undergoing peroral ("proximal") …

BACKGROUND: Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) presents a significant diagnostic challenge for clinicians due to the anatomical charac … cture with segmental enhancement in the distal ileum. Guided by this structural roadmap, retrograde double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) was successfully performed, revealing a Meckel's diverticulum accompanied by multiple irregular large ulcers with stigmata of recent bleeding. Endoclips were deployed around the lesion during the DBE procedure for preoperative marking. This en …

We present a rare case of small bowel metastasis of ovarian clear cell carcinoma, successfully diagnosed preoperatively using capsule and double-balloon endoscopy. The patient was a 62-year-old woman who underwent primary surgery for stage IIB ovarian clear cell carcinoma followed by six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. Six years later, she developed iron-deficiency anemia with melena, but conventional upper and lower endoscopy failed to identify the source of bleeding. Subsequent capsule endoscopy revealed a tumor in the distal ileum, and a biopsy was taken using double-balloon endoscopy. Pat

A 42-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of anemia. The patient underwent gastroscopy and colonoscopy, but no bleeding site was detected. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed vascular dilatation along the wall of the small intestine. Small bowel capsule endoscopy and antegrade double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) were performed, and the patient was diagnosed with a small intestinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The AVM was clipped using DBE. After clipping, abdominal contrast-enhanced CT and small bowel angiography revealed the disappearance of the AVM. DBE m

BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a very rare disease that often causes severe complications such as bowel obstruction or gastrointestinal tract bleeding. In the past, it was usually treated by using surgical intervention despite the associated complications. Balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) has been documented as an effective and safe method for the diagnosis and treatment of small bowel lesions. Hence, we conducted this study to verify whether BAE is useful for patients with PJS.
AIM: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of BAE with prophylactic polypectomy in patients with PJS.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) for the detection of small-bowel strictures in Crohn's disease (CD).
METHODS: This tertiary-referral hospital cohort study was conducted between January 2018 and May 2022. CD patients with symptoms of small-bowel stricture were enrolled sequentially. All of the patients were subjected to both computed tomography enterography (CTE) and DBE, and their symptoms of stricture were assessed using the Crohn's Disease Obstructive Score (CDOS). The diagnostic yield of DBE was compared to that of CTE, and the relationship between the DBE

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare syndrome characterized by venous malformations in the skin and gastrointestinal tract, especially in the small intestine. Patients with BRBNS have increased risks of gastrointestinal hemorrhage and anemia. This is the first report in the English literature on BRBNS with hemangiomas in the small intestine that were treated successfully by endoscopic clipping using double-balloon endoscopy. A 25-year-old Japanese man presented to a local clinic with dyspnea, fatigue, and a hemoglobin level < 5 g/dL. The diagnosis was iron deficiency anemia. Since
