The effects of placebo, propranolol and primidone were compared in 14 patients with essential tremor in a double blind, randomised, crossover study. Objective measures of tremor were obtained using an accelerometer with subsequent spectral analysis. Both propranolol (p less than 0.01) and primidone (p less than 0.01) gave significant improvement in tremor, but there was no significant difference in improvement between these drugs. Essential tremor is a common movement disorder. Tremor severity and handicap vary widely, but most patients with essential tremor do not receive a diagnosis and hence are never treated. Furthermore, many patients abandon treatment because of side-effects or poor efficacy. Hemosorption is a new approach to the treatment of late toxemia of pregnancy and essential hypertension during pregnancy. Promising results with hemosorption have been obtained: PCG- and ECG-documented improvement of the fetal status, a change in serum lipid levels, better progress of gestation and labor and delivery. The technique is simple, absolutely safe for the mother and fetus and may be adopted in the clinical routine for gestational essential hypertension unresponsive to drugs.

Policymakers practice priority-setting, as either implicit or explicit rationing, embedded in evidence-informed decision-making processes to guide funding decisions. Health technology assessment (HTA) is a method that may assist explicit evidence-informed priority setting. South Africa developed an official HTA methods guide in 2022, however before this, commissioning and performing economic evaluations was not standardized.

Propranolol having been used for decades was compared with low dose theophylline and placebo in the treatment of essential tremor. Ten de novo patients with essential tremor were treated for three months in a blind cross-over study.
