RATIONALE: The treatment of iron-deficiency anemia with oral iron supplements can present side-effects on the GI tract mucosa including necrosis, ulceration, or ischemia. The particular endoscopic findings and the histopathological exam will establish the diagnosis of erosive gastritis with iron deposits in the gastric mucosa.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present the case of a 14-year-old female admitted in our clinic for upper digestive hemorrhage, nausea, melena, and abdominal pain. Her personal history revealed iron deficiency anemia receiving oral iron supplements for approximately 2 weeks.

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: In the course of 2 1/2 years a 72-year-old man had five episodes of intestinal bleeding with anaemia, but no cause was at first found by routine diagnostic tests. After the fourth episode a diagnostic laparotomy was performed at which a diffusely infiltrating growing tumour was found. As it encircled the mesenteric vascular axis resection was not possible. But because of threatened ileal obstruction by the tumour a segmental ileal resection was performed, but no intraoperative diagnosis could be established.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend screening of people with oesophageal varices via oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy at the time of diagnosis of hepatic cirrhosis. This requires that people repeatedly undergo unpleasant invasive procedures with their attendant risks, although half of these people have no identifiable oesophageal varices 10 years after the initial diagnosis of cirrhosis. The mechanisms underlying duodenal ulcer (DU) recurrence after endoscopically confirmed healing are unclear. We sought to examine histologic differences in healing induced by omeprazole and nizatidine.
