Trunk-rotation flexibility in collegiate softball players with or without a history of shoulder or elbow injury.

CONTEXT: Throwing is a whole-body motion that requires the transfer of momentum from the lower extremity to the upper extremity via the trun … jury. CONCLUSIONS: Limited forward trunk-rotation flexibility may be a risk factor for shoulder or elbow injuries. However, further study is needed to confirm the study finding.

Double nerve transfer for elbow flexion in obstetric brachial plexus injury: a case report.

We report a case of a 10-month-old boy with a left extended upper type (C5-C7) obstetric brachial plexus injury that was treated with double nerve transfer (partial ulnar and partial median nerve transfer) to restore elbow flexion and spinal accessory nerve transfer to the suprascapular nerve to restore shoulder abduction. At 60 months' follow-up, shoulder abduction was 0-150° (M4) and elbow flexion was 0-140° (M5). Elbow, wrist and finger extension improved to M5. However, shoulder external rotation was only 0-30° (from full internal rotation). No weakness on finger and wrist flexion was obse

Handedness as a predictor of increased risk of knee, elbow, or shoulder injury, fractures and broken bones.

Several recent studies suggest that left-handers have higher susceptibility to accidental injury. Two studies investigated the suggested link between sinistrality and accidental injury by assessing the prevalence of joint problems, bone breaks, and fractures, which may be the sequelae of such mishaps. Study 1 used retrospective responses on medical history checklists completed by 1064 males on active duty with the United States Air Force. It found that left-handers were at significantly higher risk for knee problems (RR = 2.74), elbow and shoulder problems (RR = 3.03), and also swollen and pai

High-Energy Blast Injury Requiring Transradial Amputation with Associated Essex Lopresti and Terrible Triad Injuries of the Elbow: A Rare Presentation.

CASE: Blast injuries to the upper extremity can be devastating and emotionally stressful injuries. We describe a case of a high-energy blast injury to an upper extremity from an explosive. The transfer of energy caused severe soft tissue/bony damage to the hand, but also led to associated Essex Lopresti and terrible triad injuries. The patient required emergent transradial amputation by hand surgery as well as definitive fixation by our orthopaedic team. CONCLUSION: We describe a unique salvage operation that established forearm pronosupination, elbow flexion, and proper prosthetic fitting. W

Women's wrist and elbow at work: analysis of acute injuries and cumulative trauma disorders to improve ergonomics in female-dominated activities.

The aim of this study is to analyse women's wrist and elbow acute work injuries together with cumulative trauma disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and epicondylitis. Five years records (2015-2019) on women's wrist/elbow acute work injuries and CTS/epicondilytis, from Italian National Compensation Authority, were collected and pooled all together as 'dis-ac' (disorders + acute) events. A statistical analysis was performed in comparing the different female-dominated work sectors. Results showed that hairdressing/laundry sector was associated with the highest risk for wrist acute wor

Double Fascicular Transfer Using Partially Injured Donor Nerves: Is It Powerful Enough to Restore Elbow Flexion in Acute Brachial Plexus Injuries?

BACKGROUND: Loss of elbow flexion is a common sequela of acute brachial plexus injuries (BPIs). The Mackinnon/Oberlin-II double fascicular transfer (DFT) is a widely used method to restore this function in acute C5-6 or C5-7 injuries. This study attempted to evaluate if this technique can be applied reliably for cases involving C8 and/or T1 injuries. METHODS: Adult patients with acute BPIs who underwent the Mackinnon/Oberlin-II DFT in our center between 2008 and 2018 were retrospectively identified. Group I (n = 37) included patients with only C5-6 or C5-7 injury, while group II (n = 32) pati

Intercostal Nerve Transfers to the Musculocutaneous-A Reliable Nerve Transfer for Restoration of Elbow Flexion in Birth-Related Brachial Plexus Injuries.

Introduction  There is consensus on the need for early microsurgical reconstruction in birth palsies involving three or more roots, that is, extensive partial palsies and total palsies. The fundamental principles of these operations are complete exploration and judicious use of the ruptured stumps by nerve grafting to suitable distal targets. The frequent observation of root avulsions in such cases makes it imperative to look for extraplexual nerve donors for some functions. Intercostal nerves are readily available in such patients. Materials and Methods  This is a study of 50 patients of exte

Locking suture repair versus ligament augmentation-a biomechanical study regarding the treatment of acute lateral collateral ligament injuries of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Lateral collateral ligament (LCL) tears are frequently observed in fractures and dislocations of the elbow. Recent biomechanical evidence suggests that additional ligament augmentation may improve repair stability. The aim of this biomechanical in-vitro study was to compare the resistance of a locking suture repair of the LCL with a ligament augmentation technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight fresh frozen cadaveric elbows were evaluated for stability against varus/posterolateral rotatory forces (3 Nm). A strain gauge (µm/m; negative values) was placed at the origin and insertion o

Shoulder and elbow injuries in soccer goalkeepers versus field players in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2009-2010 through 2013-2014.

OBJECTIVES: Examination of the incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries in the collegiate soccer player population is limited, as is comparison between goalkeepers and field players. We hypothesized that goalkeepers would have a higher incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries than field players. Furthermore, we sought to determine the incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer players, and to determine injury risk factors. METHODS: The NCAA Injury Surveillance Program database was analyzed for injuries to NCAA men's and women's soccer…

Triceps-to-Biceps Tendon Transfer Technique for Restoration of Elbow Flexion in Adult Brachial Plexus Injury.

Restoration of elbow flexion is a priority in treating adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries. A tendon transfer is an ideal option for patients not candidates for reconstructive nerve surgery or free-functioning muscle transfer. For patients with a partial brachial plexus injury or a pan plexus injury with adequate recovered triceps function and loss of elbow flexion, a triceps-to-biceps tendon transfer is a nonmicrosurgical option to restore elbow flexion. The technique of triceps-to-biceps transfer in which the complete triceps tendon is transferred laterally, secured lateral to the radia
