Effects of electrical stimulation of the striatum on bladder activity in cats.

AIMS: Parkinson's disease (PD) affects the nigrostriatal projections leading to micturition disturbance in most cases. Overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms such as urinary urgency or urgent urinary incontinence are common amongst PD patients. Several urodynamic studies have revealed that detrusor overactivity causes OAB symptoms in PD patients. We assert that striatal dysfunction might contribute to the pathogenesis of detrusor overactivity in PD patients. However, the role of the striatum in bladder contraction remains unclear. METHODS: We generated spontaneous isovolumetric bladder contraction

Elimination of a pressure ulcer with electrical stimulation--a case study.

Pressure ulcers, also called decubitus ulcers, are a common challenge of humanity and are exceptionally difficult to heal. They are wounds that are initiated by relatively short periods of pressure on the skin that blocks blood circulation causing the skin and underlying tissues to die, leading to an open wound. Pressure release can prevent further tissue degeneration, and some ulcers heal and disappear by themselves. However, many pressure ulcers never heal and continue to grow in diameter and depth. By one year, such unhealing ulcers are referred to as chronic ulcers. Chronic ulcers frequent

Functional electrical stimulation of denervated muscles: an experimental evaluation.

For many years there has been a dearth of effective treatment options for the severe wasting and secondary consequences of motor nerve injury. In recent years, however, an intensive regime of electrical stimulation has been shown to have considerable therapeutic benefits. This article reviews the results of an extensive study designed to address the clinically relevant issues in an appropriate animal model. The study reveals both the benefits and the limitations of the technique, but strongly endorses the therapeutic advantages of introducing a program of stimulation during the initial, nondeg

Effects of chronic electrical stimulation on paralyzed expiratory muscles.

Following spinal cord injury, the expiratory muscles develop significant disuse atrophy characterized by reductions in their weight, fiber cross-sectional area, and force-generating capacity. We determined the extent to which these physiological alterations can be prevented with electrical stimulation. Because a critical function of the expiratory muscles is cough generation, an important goal was the maintenance of maximal force production. In a cat model of spinal cord injury, short periods of high-frequency lower thoracic electrical spinal cord stimulation (SCS) at the T(10) level (50 Hz, 1

Bladder emptying by intermittent electrical stimulation of the pudendal nerve.

Persons with a suprasacral spinal cord injury cannot empty their bladder voluntarily. Bladder emptying can be restored by intermittent electrical stimulation of the sacral nerve roots (SR) to cause bladder contraction. However, this therapy requires sensory nerve transection to prevent dyssynergic contraction of the external urethral sphincter (EUS). Stimulation of the compound pudendal nerve trunk (PN) activates spinal micturition circuitry, leading to a reflex bladder contraction without a reflex EUS contraction. The present study determined if PN stimulation could produce bladder emptying w

Effects of alternating current electrical stimulation on lengthening callus.

Limb lengthening by the callotasis method has been clinically applied to patients who suffered from limb length inequality, micromelia, angular deformation and partial bone defect on long bones. However, this technique was time consuming and led to various complications, such as infection at the pin insertion sites, limitation of the range of motion in adjacent joints, muscular weakness and peripheral neuroparalysis. This study was undertaken to investigate whether alternating current electric (AC) stimulation could shorten the maturation period during callotasis. The tibiae of 20 immature mal

Intravaginal electrical stimulation for the treatment of chronic pelvic pain.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of intravaginal electrical stimulation in women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP). STUDY DESIGN: Between May 2002 and February 2004, 24 women with CPP with no apparent cause were evaluated. They underwent 10 sessions of intravaginal electrical stimulation. A program for measuring chronic diffuse pain, with a frequency of 8 Hz, variation in intensity and frequency, pulse length of 1 msec, and adjustment to the bearable intensity of each individual patient (in milliamps) was utilized. Treatment consisted of 30-minute applications, 2 or 3 times per week, and the

Acute effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on tremor.

Based on the claims that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is effective in myoclonic dystonia and essential tremor, we evaluated its acute effects in 5 patients with essential tremor and 2 patients with tremor attributed to peripheral neuropathy using as parameters the Washington Heights-Inwood Genetic Study of Essential Tremor rating scale, self-reported impression, and recording of electromyographic activity. We found no significant improvement in any of the parameters tested.

Implantable electrical stimulation in high-risk hindfoot fusions.

The risk of nonunion in both the ankle and subtalar joints has been reported as high as 41% and 16%, respectively. Several factors have been reported to significantly increase the incidence of nonunion: smoking, previous nonunion, osteonecrosis, history of infection, fracture type, and major medical problems. A single surgeon's experience is retrospectively reviewed. Thirteen patients who were identified as high risk for non-union had an implantable electrical stimulator placed at the time of their ankle or hindfoot fusion along with bone grafting. Three ankle, two subtalar, six tibiotalocalca

Influence of electrical stimulation on regeneration of the radial nerve in dogs.

The effects of biphasic electric fields on nerve regeneration that follows injury to the left radial nerve were studied in dogs by electromyography (EMG). Left and right radial nerves were crushed with a serrated haemostat. Stimulating electrodes were positioned proximally and distally to the site of the injury. The left nerves received rectangular, biphasic and current pulses (30 microA, 0.5 Hz) through the injury for two months. The right radial nerves were treated as controls and regenerated without electrical stimulation. EMG activities were recorded intramuscularly from the left and right

Intraoperative electrical stimulation for identification of cranial nerve nuclei.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of cranial nerve nuclei monitoring during resection of brainstem cavernous malformations. Eleven patients with brainstem cavernous malformations underwent resection of their malformations utilizing cranial nerve nuclei monitoring. Cranial nerves V and VII were monitored by placing electrodes in muscle groups innervated by these nerves and recording manipulation-induced neurotonic discharges and triggered electromyographic (EMG) activity, after electrical stimulation of the corresponding brainstem nuclei. Seven of 11 proce

Electrical stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus in advanced Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: In many patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, treatment with levodopa is complicated by fluctuations between an "off" period, when the medication is not working and the motor symptoms of parkinsonism are present, and an "on" period, when the medication is causing improved mobility, often accompanied by debilitating dyskinesias. In animal models of Parkinson's disease, there is overactivity in the subthalamic nucleus, and electrical stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus improves parkinsonism. We therefore sought to determine the efficacy and safety of electrical stimulation

Enhanced motility of the vagotomized canine stomach by electrical stimulation.

Functional impairment of the vagotomized stomach used as a substitute oesophagus seriously deteriorates the quality of life of patients following oesophageal cancer surgery. We speculated that if the enteric neurons of the reconstructed gastric tube survived functionally, the motility of the gastric tube could be facilitated and the recovery process after operation would improve as a consequence. In the present study we investigated whether direct electrical stimulation was effective for facilitating the motility of the canine vagotomized stomach. Dogs underwent truncal vagotomy by transabdomi

Assessment of the Efficacy of Functional Electrical Stimulation in Patients with Hemiplegia.

The purpose of this review is to summarize recent findings relevant to the efficacy of functional electrical stimulation (FES) in the rehabilitation of patients with hemiplegia. Most clinicians still view this modality as an experimental tool. Recent controlled clinical studies have shown that FES has the potential for improving the gait pattern of hemiplegic patients and for reducing shoulder subluxation. Controlled studies showing successful treatment of the hemiplegic hand are not presently available. Given the recent technological advances and promising clinical studies, it appears that FE

Inhibition of withdrawal responses by pelvic nerve electrical stimulation.

In urethane-anesthetized rats, the compound action potential of the pelvic nerve was found to consist of three different waves, two in the A delta fiber and one in the C-fiber range of conduction velocity. Electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve produced a complete inhibition of the withdrawal response to noxious foot pinch or foot compression. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of the contralateral posterior biceps muscle was used to record the withdrawal response. The withdrawal response inhibition was related to the duration and the frequency of electrical stimulation. Low (5-10 Hz) an

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation and vibration of neck muscles in neglect.

Four neglect patients without visual field defects, one with a lesion of the right basal ganglia and three with a right, predominantly parietal lesion, were examined with a cancellation and a copying task before, during and after neck muscle vibration, during transcutaneous electrical stimulation of neck muscles and during vibration of hand muscles on the left side. In all patients, neck muscle vibration improved task performance, while transcutaneous electrical stimulation and hand vibration had little or no effect. The present results demonstrate that the effect of neck muscle vibration cann

Cortical electrical stimulation in humans. The negative motor areas.

Summarizing, we have presented evidence in humans for two "negative motor areas" which we had speculated play a significant role in the planning of voluntary motor movements. A review of the more recent experimental literature shows that histological, physiological, and electrical stimulation studies in animals reveal the existence of two frontal regions that from the experimental data also seem to play an essential role in the preparation (as opposed to execution) of voluntary movements. Current available evidence suggests that these two areas (areas F5 and F6 of Rizzolatti et al.) correspond

Intravaginal maximal electrical stimulation in the treatment of urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence imposes a large economic burden, estimated at $10 billion per year. As the cost of health care continues to rise, conservative therapeutic measures are becoming more attractive. Anecdotal reports suggest that electrical stimulation may be up to 87% effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence. Investigators use different stimulation devices and protocols and make a comparison of results difficult. The true efficacy of electrical stimulation for the treatment of urinary incontinence is unknown since there have been no controlled clinical trials. Within our referral-ba
