ECT is a well-established treatment for adults with mood disorders. The use of ECT in child and adolescent psychiatry is, however, less common, although there is a need for effective treatment of mania when the medical treatment has been exhausted. This case was made to elaborate on the experiences from a clinical department, and the focus was on the effectiveness of ECT in treatment-resistant mania. In line with previous studies, the two cases presented show the positive effect of ECT with few side effects. However, further research is still needed.

This case report discusses a 35-year-old woman with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy and no prior psychiatric history who developed persecu … sting drug-resistant psychosis. Notably, complete remission of psychotic symptoms was achieved with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a well-established intervention for various psychiatric conditions but rarely reported in the context of epilepsy-associated psychosis. This case underscores the need for novel therapeutic approaches in managing complex comorbidities like dru …

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment method for depression therapy. It produces a number of biological effects, including neurotrophic factors regulation. In the present paper, we investigated the ECT response in depressed rats subjected to the variable frequency ultrasound (20-45 kHz) and examined the contribution of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression changes to the observed effects. The obtained results reflect the therapeutic potential of ECT for the treatment of depressive-like state in rodents and indicate the role of BDNF in these processes. In futur…

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for schizophrenia and mood disorders; however, most evidence is derived from the adult population, with less evidence in adolescents. We sought to determine the use of ECT in adolescents in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and evaluate the treatment outcome.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective naturalistic analysis of ECT registry data of patients aged from 10 to 19 years from March 2017 to March 2023. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the demographics and clinical characteristics. Paired t tests were use…

In the last century, prescribing electroconvulsive therapy usually involved considering the relative merits of unilateral versus bilateral electroconvulsive therapy, with most other parameters fixed. However, research over the last 30 years has discovered that several parameters of the electroconvulsive therapy stimulus can have a significant impact on efficacy and cognitive side effects. The stimulus dose relative to seizure threshold was shown to significantly affect efficacy, especially for right unilateral electroconvulsive therapy, where suprathreshold doses in the vicinity of 5-6 times s…

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains stigmatized in the broader medical community because of misunderstandings about treatment procedures, mortality rates, and cardiovascular complications. Electroconvulsive therapy causes periprocedural hemodynamic variability because of the surges in parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems after the administration of the electrical charge. Patients experience an increase in cardiac workload, which is potentially dangerous for patients with preexisting heart disease. Several findings suggest that cardiac complications occur most frequently in patie…

This study aimed to study the effect of maintenance electroconvulsive therapy (mECT) on hospitalization rates in patients who had been readmitted after acute courses of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and determine the most frequently used treatment schedules in mECT. Patients who had undergone mECT treatment for the last 5 years were retrospectively reviewed. Seventy patients were included in the study. The control group of 70 patients was selected from patients who received only acute ECT. Of the patients in the mECT group, 55.8% (39) were female, and 41.4% (29) were diagnosed with major de…

OBJECTIVES: One adverse effect of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is dental fracture; thus, a bite guard and muscle relaxants are used to prevent it. Earlier research reported varying rates of dental fracture, but there is no large-scale study on the incidence of dental fracture during ECT. This study aimed to examine the incidence of dental fracture during ECT and to investigate whether the incidence differs between different sexes, age groups, diagnosis groups, electrode placements, or number of treatment sessions.
METHODS: This register-based study used data from the Swedish national quali…

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical profile of adolescents aged up to 19 years who had received electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was carried out to identify adolescents aged up to 19 years who had received ECT during the period 2012-2018. Details regarding their sociodemographic and clinical variables and ECT data were extracted from the records.
RESULTS: During the study period, a total of 51 adolescents received ECT, and complete records of 50 patients were available for analysis. 4.04% (51 out of 1260) of the patients who received EC…

The safety of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is improving with advances in anesthesia and ECT technique. There are published case reports of successful treatment of depression in patients who were once considered at high medical risk. Recent cerebral hemorrhage is one of the conditions considered to significantly increase the risk of ECT treatment. Literature search did not indicate any case reports of ECT treatment in patients with recent subarachnoid hemorrhage. We report the successful ECT treatment of depression in an older man who had developed a subarachnoid hemorrhage after a suicide a…

There are no rational reasons why electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) should not be subject to the same criteria in its clinical application as any other treatment in medicine. Associations referring to historical events and their presentation in the media do not provide convincing arguments against the clinical use of ECT. In order to offer ECT to patients, scientifically solid evidence with respect to its clinical results must be available. As this scientific evidence is clearly given, ECT must be offered to the patients. A well-informed, reflected medicine must not withhold an effective treatme…

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective therapy for severe depressive and psychotic disorders. As patients may be subject to legal incapacity and lack of insight, treatment may be administered against the patient's will. There is only limited evidence on the use of ECT against the patient's non-autonomous will.
METHODS: We report a series of eight patients who received ECT against their will in two German university medical hospitals between 2014 and 2016. The effectiveness, tolerability and patients' perspective are described.
RESULTS: Seven of eight patients were …

For many patients with neuropsychiatric illnesses, standard psychiatric treatments with mono or combination pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and transcranial magnetic stimulation are ineffective. For these patients with treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric illnesses, a main therapeutic option is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Decades of research have found ECT to be highly effective; however, it can also result in adverse neurocognitive effects. Specifically, ECT results in disorientation after each session, anterograde amnesia for recently learned information, and retrograde amnesia for prev…
