Salt dependent stability of stearic acid Langmuir-Blodgett films exposed to aqueous electrolytes.

We use contact angle goniometry, imaging ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy to study the stability and wettability of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of stearic acid on silica substrates, upon drying and exposure to aqueous solutions of varying salinity. The influences of Ca(2+) and Na(+) ions are compared by varying their concentrations, both in the subphase before the LB transfer, and in the droplets to which the dried LB layers are exposed. Ca(2+) ions in the subphase are found to enhance the stability, leading to contact angles up to 100°, as compared to less than 5° for Na(+). Co

The utility of PEG3350 without electrolytes for 2-day colonoscopy preparation in children.

OBJECTIVES: Successful colonoscopy preparation requires a method which is easy to administer. Simplifying this technique would be useful for adult and pediatric gastroenterologists. Most cleanout agents are not well tolerated by children. Polyethylene glycol without electrolytes (PEG3350 without electrolytes) has been used for constipation and bowel cleanout, but has not been studied as 2-day preparation for colonoscopy in children. This study evaluates the dosing, effectiveness and satisfaction with PEG3350 without electrolytes as a 2-day cleanout for colonoscopy preparation in children. MET…

Hemodynamics, electrolytes, and organ histology of larger-volume liposuction in a porcine model.

Liposuction is a procedure that allows the surgical removal of excess adipose tissue in healthy individuals. Lipoplasty is commonly performed with few clinical side effects. However, with increased lipoaspirate volumes, complications have been reported. In addition, the abnormal appearance of fat cells in other tissues subsequent to lipoplasty has been reported in a small number of cases. The authors examined whether larger-volume lipoplasty, in the porcine model, resulted in disturbances in cardiac or pulmonary output levels, electrolytes, and liver chemistry analyses or alterations in organ …

Piperazine quaternary diammonium salts as additives to background electrolytes in capillary zone electrophoresis.

The differential behavior of five different quaternary mono- and diammonium salts, among the 18 investigated, in modulating the electroendoosmotic flow (EOF) and analyte separations in capillary zone electrophoresis is evaluated. It is found that quaternary diammonium salts with positive charges separated by more than four carbon atoms, while exhibiting a very strong affinity for chromatographic silica beads, to the point of exhibiting Rf values close to zero, display, on the contrary, a very poor affinity for the silica wall of capillaries. Compounds separated only by a C2 unit (i.e., 1,4-dia

The effect of intense passive apnea in the acid-base balance and electrolytes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the disturbances of the acid-base balance and electrolyte disorders in healthy individuals in the greatest passive apnea (prior to apnea and prior to first inhalation). The changes of the acid-base balance, the serum potassium and calcium levels as well as the disturbances of the cardiac rhythm were studied in a group of 15 healthy males aged 18 to 41 years old. Seven individuals part of the original group participated in a second trial. Following the initial apnea trial the individuals were allowed to 2-3 free inhalations and a second passive apnea eff

Respiratory alkalosis and associated electrolytes in long-term ventilator dependent persons with tetraplegia.

STUDY DESIGN: A pilot case control study of the acid-base and electrolyte status in 30 long-term ventilator-dependent (LTVD) and 30 self ventilating persons with tetraplegia. OBJECTIVES: To assess the extent of respiratory alkalosis and screen for associated hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia and/or hypophosphataemia. SETTING: Medically stable persons with tetraplegia under the long-term care of the Southport Spinal Injuries Centre, England. METHODS: Blood gases and electrolytes were sampled from 30 control patients with tetraplegia and from 30 patients having been LTVD for more than 12 months. …

Altered renal handling of electrolytes in a child with central diabetes insipidus (CDI).

A 12-year-old female child, with a history of polyuria and polydipsia of about three years duration, was admitted to Ethio-Swedish Paediatri … betes insipidus of undefined etiology is presented and the possibility of altered renal handling of electrolytes and an abnormal response to vasopressin in such cases is noted. The problem of management and the currently available treatment options are summarized.

Variation in serum electrolytes and enzyme concentrations in patients with sickle cell disease.

AIM: To assess levels of some biochemical variables in sickle cell disease patients from eastern Saudi Arabia during steady state and in crises states, with a view to comparing biochemical and clinical manifestations of the disease with those in other geographical locations. METHODS: Serum calcium, uric acid, total bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase, hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, and haemoglobin were measured in 110 sickle cell patients when in steady state. The same variables were measured on 30 of the patients when they went into crisis. RESULTS: Serum calcium tended to be lower in sickle c

Colyte and Colyte-flavored (PEG-3350 & electrolytes) for oral solution for gastrointestinal lavage.

Colyte and Colyte-flavored are effective in preparing the bowel for endoscopic examination, particularly when used in combination with saline and stimulant laxatives, which may decrease the volume of Colyte required for optimal bowel cleansing.

Arterial receptors for adrenal steroids and transport of electrolytes in vascular smooth muscle.

The role of arterial receptors to mineralocorticoids (MC) and glucocorticoids (GC) in the induction by MC and GC of changes in transmembrane transport of sodium (Na+) and water was investigated. Implantation of Silastic rubber strips impregnated with 11-desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) in rabbits was followed by a marked increase in vascular smooth muscle cell membrane permeability to Na+ and hypertension. Both of these effects were preventable with progesterone, an anti-MC at the steroid-receptor level, implanted in relative excess simultaneously with DOCA, in approximately 50% of the impl

Disorders of the serum electrolytes, acid-base balance, and renal function in alcoholism.

This chapter reviews the disturbances of the serum sodium and potassium concentrations, acid-base imbalances, and acute renal dysfunction that are seen frequently in alcoholic patients. The hyponatremia common in decompensated cirrhotics is caused by an impairment of renal free water clearance and concomitant water ingestion. Excessive proximal renal tubular sodium reabsorption and nonosmotic vasopressin release underlie the defect in renal water excretion in cirrhosis. Restriction of water intake is the principal therapeutic measure for hyponatremia. Hypokalemia is common in alcoholics but wh

Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders: Sodium Disorders.

Sodium disorders are commonly encountered in clinical practice and are frequently misunderstood. Abnormal serum sodium levels are due to an imbalance in free water. Hyponatremia and hypernatremia can be asymptomatic if mild and chronic; however, acute and severe changes in sodium levels may cause substantial symptoms. In acute mild hyponatremia, symptoms can include confusion, vomiting, and weakness. In severe cases, seizures can occur. Determining the patient's volume status helps to determine the underlying etiology and appropriate treatment strategy. Euvolemic hyponatremia is the most commo
