In this study, twenty-nine cleft lip and palate patients with anterior crossbite were chosen as study group and twenty-eight normal children, twenty-seven patients with anterior crossbite as the control groups. All subjects were examined with EMG, and found some characters of the perioral muscles activity of the cleft patients. (1) The electromyographic amplitude of the upper lip and chin muscles was higher in cleft patients than that of other two groups during swallowing of saliva (2) Activity of chin muscle in cleft patients and crossbite patients in rest position were higher than that of no

The development of new phonosurgical techniques has increased the level of interest in the field of neurolaryngology. This field requires valid techniques for determining if muscle activation is normal. Laryngeal electromyography is being used more frequently to assess muscle innervation and synkinesis. Further, magnetic stimulation has been introduced as a noninvasive technique for nerve stimulation. Technical limitations that affect the clinical utility of both these techniques are reviewed: 1) difficulties obtaining selective and accurate electromyographic laryngeal muscle recordings, 2) no…

Thirteen patients with faecal incontinence and 26 control subjects were studied to investigate whether a quantitative electromyographic (EMG) signal could be correlated to anal manometry. Three different electrodes were used--a concentric needle electrode, a disposable sponge electrode, and a hard anal plug electrode. The maximum amplitude of the EMG recording was used as a quantitative parameter. Linear regression showed significant correlation between EMG and anal manometry with the sponge electrode, both at rest and during squeeze. Significant correlation was also found with the concentric

With an increased interest in sporting activity, particularly among the older population, together with the appreciation of the importance of "bony entrapment" as a cause of sciatica, so the need has arisen to develop a simple, noninvasive, reliable, and reproducible method of determining whether leg pain is of radicular or referred origin. In our experience, liquid crystal thermography has proved unsatisfactory but electromyography appears to be of value in distinguishing root from referred pain in approximately 70 per cent of patients within this group. Our experience with radiculography wit…

Conventional electromyography was used to measure motor unit potential duration in the external anal sphincter in normal subjects and patients with idiopathic faecal incontinence. The results revealed a direct correlation between age and mean motor unit potential duration in control subjects, but no differences between age-matched male and female subjects. Patients with faecal incontinence exhibited prolongation of mean motor unit potential duration compared with matched controls. This technique provided useful quantitative data on reinnervation within the anal sphincter, complementing the res…

A total of 26 patients with symptomatic voiding dysfunction underwent cystometrography concomitant with simultaneous perineal floor and rectus abdominis electromyography. Of the patients 20 had well defined neurological pathological conditions. Cystometrography/perineal electromyography revealed detrusor hyperreflexia with appropriate sphincter relaxation in 8 patients, with vesicosphincter dyssynergia in 10 and with pseudo-dyssynergia in 2. Rectus electromyography in these patients did not reveal electromyographic activity during the filling and expulsion phases of the cystometrogram. However…

Electromyographic potentials of fasciculations were studied in ten patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The EMG recordings were made from the extensor digitorum brevis muscle. The EMG recording was so selective that only one motor unit potential appeared on maximal voluntary effort and on supramaximal electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve. In a series of fasciculations, the shapes of the EMG potentials varied, while in a series of voluntary twitch activations of electrical nerve stimulations the EMG potentials were mainly constant. Fasciculations were followed by antidromi

The authors used EMG registrations of the reflex potentials in the orbicular ocular muscles appearing in an electrostimulation of the supraorbital nerve. The study included an analysis of the fluctuations of the latent period of the winking reflex in patients with different lesions of the central and peripheral nervous system. The authors were able to show a significant elongation of the latent period in patients with disseminated sclerosis, encephalomyelitis, Guillain-Barre polyradiculoneuritis. In other signs of focal lesions of the brain stem and polyneuropathy the latent period of the wink

BACKGROUND: Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics that vary widely across individuals. Current clinical assessments primarily rely on subjective rating scales, limiting the precision of tic evaluation and treatment outcome monitoring. To improve clinical decision-making, objective, reliable detection methods are needed.
OBJECTIVES: This study compared the tic-detection performance of video and electromyography (EMG)-based algorithms. We hypothesized that there would be similar accuracy across modalities and that applying multimod…

Prediction of transition between locomotion modes (e.g. moving from flat ground to stairs, etc) is vital for optimal interface with lower limb assistive technologies such as exoskeletons and prostheses. Inertial and bipolar electromyography (EMG) sensors have been investigated, but accuracy for clinical utility remains unresolved. This shortfall may be attributed to their limited capacity to detect subtle changes in muscle activations, particularly during the early stages of locomotion transitions (e.g., near the toe-off). In this study, we examined the effectiveness of two high-density surfac…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tremor is one of the most frequent movement disorders encountered in clinical practice with heterogeneous phenomenology and etiology. Surface electromyography (SEMG) is a noninvasive and reproducible test that can diagnose tremor syndromes.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, the clinical and electrophysiologic records of 97 consecutive patients with tremor syndromes who visited our movement disorder clinic between January 2023 and March 2024 were examined.
RESULTS: In our study, 28.8% (n = 28) of patients were of essential tremor (ET) syndrome. SEMG of ET syndro…

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects both the upper and lower motor neurons, it has a heterogeneous clinical presentation, there are atypical variants that differ from the classic form of the disease. The criteria for diagnosis have evolved over time, with the support of electromyography (EMG), we present a patient series with these variants in which EMG was crucial to make the diagnosis.
CLINICAL CASES: Six cases are described with atypical presentation of motor neuron disease, for the isolated bulbar ALS phenotype, three cases are repor…

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Needle electromyography (EMG) and muscle ultrasound can be used to evaluate patients with suspected neuromuscular disorders. The relation between muscle ultrasound pathology and the corresponding needle EMG findings is unknown. In this study we compared the results of concurrent ultrasound and needle EMG examinations in patients suspected of a neuromuscular disorder.
METHODS: Retrospective data from 218 patients with pairwise ultrasound and EMG results of 796 muscles were analyzed. We compared overall quantitative and visual muscle ultrasound results to EMGs with neurogenic…

BACKGROUND: : Needle electromyography (EMG) abnormalities in the trapezius muscle (TM) can be seen in neuromuscular disorders. The aim was to determine the characteristics of needle EMG abnormalities observed in the TM in neuromuscular disorders.
METHODS: The data of patients who applied to the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory of University of Health Sciences Adana City Training and Research Hospital between December 2018 and October 2021 were reviewed. Polio survivors, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, patients with sensorimotor polyneuropathy, patients with spinal cord lesion…

Minimizing metabolic energy expenditure (MEE) plays an important role in increasing mobility in people with locomotor disabilities, as movements that require high energy lead to less activity. Rehabilitation programs and devices use MEE to determine how effective they are, but using indirect calorimetry is limiting due to time delays and non-real-world conditions. Electromyography (EMG) offers insight into how muscles activate; thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a real-time MEE feedback system through the utilization of EMG signals. Participants completed five walking conditions at…
