Anterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: an underappreciated entity.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the frequency and characteristics of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) arising from involvement of the anterior semicircular canal (AC) as compared with the posterior canal (PC) and horizontal canal (HC). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective review of patients with BPPV. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: A total of 260 patients who were evaluated for vertigo were identified as experiencing BPPV. INTERVENTIONS: Standard vestibular assessment including the use of electrooculography (EOG) or video-oculography (VOG) was completed on all patients. Based on EOG/VOG …

The Brain, Body, and Behavior Dataset (BBBD): Multimodal Recordings during Educational Videos.

The brain, body, and behavior dataset (BBBD) provides multimodal recordings from 178 participants across five experiments in which short educational videos were viewed. The dataset contains about 110 hours of electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration, pupil size, gaze position, saccades, blinks, fixations, and head-motion signals, all time-aligned to the video and standardized in the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) format. Participants watched three to six videos (mean = 28 ± 5 min) under conditions that manipulated attention (attentive versus

Rapid Eye Movements during REM Sleep Differentiate PSP from Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the characteristics and occurrence frequencies of rapid eye movements (REMs) during REM sleep in movement disorders. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to detect and characterize REMs during polysomnographically defined REM sleep as recorded by electro-oculography (EOG) in 12 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 13 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 12 healthy controls. METHODS: Using a modified EOG montage, we developed an algorithm that automatically detects and characterizes REMs during REM sleep based on their presumptive saccad

Assessment of the suitability of using a forehead EEG electrode set and chin EMG electrodes for sleep staging in polysomnography.

Recently, a number of portable devices designed for full polysomnography at home have appeared. However, current scalp electrodes used for electroencephalograms are not practical for patient self-application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of recently introduced forehead electroencephalogram electrode set and supplementary chin electromyogram electrodes for sleep staging. From 31 subjects (10 male, 21 female; age 31.3 ± 11.8 years), sleep was recorded simultaneously with a forehead electroencephalogram electrode set and with a standard polysomnography setup consisting of

Feedback-related negativity encodes outcome uncertainty in the gain domain but not in the loss domain.

Outcome uncertainty plays an important role in decision making. The present study used event-related potentials (ERP) combined with a simple gambling task to investigate the time course of outcome uncertainty processing in the gain and the loss domains. Behaviorally, participants showed a preference for the uncertain option in the gain domain, whereas they showed no such preference in the loss domain. In ERP analyses, the feedback-related negativity (FRN) amplitudes mirrored the behavioral results: for gains, cue-elicited FRN amplitudes were more negative for uncertain than for certain cues, w

Evaluation of the smooth pursuit tests in multiple sclerosis patients.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), randomly located demyelination lesions may involve a large part of the central nervous system and disturb oculomotor activity, including impairment of saccadic and pursuit systems. The aim of the work was to determine the frequency of smooth pursuit disturbances in MS patients and assess the feasibility of various methods for smooth pursuit assessment: the clinical bedside examination and quantitative electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. In addition, we analyzed the effects of age on the results of smooth pursuit tests. Sixty MS patients and 50 volunteers underwent

Newborn infants learn during sleep.

Newborn infants must rapidly adjust their physiology and behavior to the specific demands of the novel postnatal environment. This adaptation depends, at least in part, on the infant's ability to learn from experiences. We report here that infants exhibit learning even while asleep. Bioelectrical activity from face and scalp electrodes was recorded from neonates during an eye movement conditioning procedure in which a tone was followed by a puff of air to the eye. Sleeping newborns rapidly learned the predictive relationship between the tone and the puff. Additionally, in the latter part of tr

Loss feedback negativity elicited by single- versus conjoined-feature stimuli.

Event-related brain potential studies show that negative feedback in guessing tasks elicits a medial frontal negativity. Most theory and experimentation concerning this feedback-related negativity (FRN) has assumed that the FRN has little relationship to the perceptual characteristics of the feedback. This study challenges this assumption. We used a single visual feature or a conjunction of features to indicate reward feedback in a gambling task. In the single-feature condition, losses elicited a larger FRN than gains; in the conjoined-feature condition, that difference was not observed. The r

ERP evidence of a dichotic left-ear deficit in some dyslexic children.

Children with and without behavioral dichotic left-ear deficits participated in an event-related potential study with quasidichotic presentations of familiar fairy tale segments. Electrical activity was recorded from the scalp while the children listened for semantically and/or syntactically anomalous words from either the right side or the left side while competing segments of the fairy tale were simultaneously presented from the opposite side. Latencies and amplitudes were averaged for each target condition within the group with dichotic left-ear deficits (LED) and the group with normal dich

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder: a sleep disturbance affecting mainly older men.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder is characterized by the intermittent loss of REM-related muscle atonia and the appearance of elaborated motor behaviors (sometimes violent behavior) and vocalizations associated with dream mentation. Nine patients were diagnosed in our Sleep Disorders Unit with this syndrome during the period August 1997-April 2000. All were male, average age 67.9 +/- 6.9 years. The complaint of all our patients was the occurrence of violent or injurious sleep behavior mainly during the dream stage. Jumping or falling out of bed and slapping or beating their wiv

Double-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation over the frontal eye field facilitates triggering of memory-guided saccades.

The study investigated the influence of double-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) on memory-guided saccade triggering. Double pulses with interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 35, 50, 65 or 80 ms were applied over the right frontal eye field (FEF) and as control over the occipital cortex. A significant dTMS effect was found exclusively for contralateral saccades; latency of memory-guided saccades was reduced after FEF stimulation with an ISI of 50 ms compared to latency without stimulation. This effect proved to be specific for the ISI of 50 ms over the FEF because control stimulation

A slow wave investigation of working memory biases in mood disorders.

Mood-congruent working memory biases were examined in a delayed matching to sample paradigm using the slow wave (SW) event-related brain potential (ERP) component. Mood-congruent working memory biases, indexed by SW amplitudes, were demonstrated among individuals experiencing a major depressive episode (MDE) and nondepressed controls but not individuals with dysthymia. However, analyses of symptom severity demonstrated that those with dysthymia exhibited significantly less negative SW amplitudes with increasing depressive mood severity, whereas individuals with major depression demonstrated mo

The N170 occipito-temporal component is delayed and enhanced to inverted faces but not to inverted objects: an electrophysiological account of face-specific processes in the human brain.

Behavioral studies have shown that picture-plane inversion impacts face and object recognition differently, thereby suggesting face-specific processing mechanisms in the human brain. Here we used event-related potentials to investigate the time course of this behavioral inversion effect in both faces and novel objects. ERPs were recorded for 14 subjects presented with upright and inverted visual categories, including human faces and novel objects (Greebles). A N170 was obtained for all categories of stimuli, including Greebles. However, only inverted faces delayed and enhanced N170 (bilaterall

Effect of a neuroactive steroid infused into the cerebral ventricles of fetal sheep in utero using small infusion volumes.

Placental progesterone metabolites may influence fetal behaviour during late gestation. We have investigated the effect of the neuroactive metabolite, pregnanolone, on the sleep/awake behaviour of fetal sheep. These studies can only be effectively performed in unanesthetized animals with chronically implanted leads and catheters. The relatively large internal volumes of these catheters raises problems for cerebroventriclear infusions. Therefore, we developed a device with negligible deadspace ( approximately 10 microl) consisting of a ventricular cannula attached to a small cap which allowed t

Nasal prongs in the detection of sleep-related disordered breathing in the sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome.

Conventional systems to monitor oronasal flow in sleep studies have traditionally relied on a thermistor signal. Our study was designed to verify whether nasal prongs (NP) connected to a pressure transducer could improve respiratory events detection in patients with sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) compared to traditional systems. Sleep episodes from a 2 h conventional polysomnographic record plus NP signal obtained at random from eight patients (age: mean(+/-SD) 53(+/-12) yrs; body mass index (BMI): 29(+/-6) kg x m(-2); apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI): 27(+/-20) events x h(-1)) were identi

Loss of vision alone may result in seesaw nystagmus.

A patient is described who developed seesaw nystagmus (SSN) associated with progressive severe vision loss due to cone-rod dystrophy. She was otherwise neurologically normal, and findings on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain were normal, including optic chiasm, meso-diencephalic junction, and brainstem. The literature is reviewed on neurologically normal patients with SSN and ocular vision loss, and the hypothesis is presented that SSN may become manifest as a result of vision loss alone, even in patients with chiasmal lesions, without disruption of central ocular motility pathways.
