Body-oriented therapies for the treatment of eating disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with eating disorders often experience disturbances of body experience across the domains of cognition, affect and perception. Some body-oriented therapies (BOT) - body-oriented psychological therapies (BOPT) and holistic body-oriented therapies (HBOT) - aim to improve mind-body connection and body experience and help people feel differently about managing their eating behaviours. This review aimed to identify and describe these BOT for eating disorders, investigate their effects and explore patients' experiences. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA gu

Family function, anxiety and depression in adults with disabilities: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of family dysfunction, anxiety and depression is high in people with disabilities due to long-term activity constraints and social difficulties. Recently, although studies have attempted to provide guidance for family therapy by focusing on the relationship between family function and negative emotions, the specific effects of improved family function during family therapy on alleviation of anxiety and depressive symptoms have been obscured. Thus, this study attempted to elucidate the impact of specific family functioning on specific symptoms of anxiety and depressio

Effectiveness of a high-intensive trauma-focused, family-based therapy for youth exposed to family violence: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Family violence is a common problem with direct adverse effects on children as well as indirect effects through disruption of parenting and parent-child relationships. The complex interrelationships between family violence, parenting, and relationships make recovery from psychological responses difficult. In more than half of the families referred to mental health care after family violence, the violence continues. Also, the effect sizes of "golden standard" treatments are generally lower for complex trauma compared to other forms of trauma. In the treatment of complex trauma, trau

Amelioration of motor and nonmotor symptoms in cortical cerebellar atrophy and multiple system atrophy-cerebellar type by inpatient rehabilitation: a retrospective study.

Sporadic spinocerebellar degenerative diseases such as multiple system atrophy (cerebellar type) and cortical cerebellar atrophy typically present with cerebellar ataxia. Multiple system atrophy is characterized by ataxia, with parkinsonism, dysautonomia and neuropsychiatric symptoms, resulting in reduced quality of life. Effects of physical rehabilitation focused on motor symptoms with ataxia in nonmultiple system atrophy patients have been reported; however, without addressing concomitant nonmotor symptoms. Here, we examined the motor, nonmotor and quality of life effects of inpatient physic

A four-session mindfulness-based cognitive therapy enhances problem-focused coping strategies in mothers of neonates in NICUs.

BACKGROUND: The birth of an infant with an abnormality or a postpartum disease and subsequent admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is very stressful for mothers. The adoption of effective coping strategies can enable the mother to tolerate the critical conditions of the newborn’s illness. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term (four 2-hour sessions) mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) program on improving coping strategies among mothers of infants admitted to the NICU. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test-post-test

Initiating levodopa pump therapy: a qualitative study of patient and caregiver perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting motor and non-motor functions. When oral medication no longer provides adequate control, device-aided therapies (DAT), including levodopa infusion therapy, may be introduced. Although DAT can improve symptom management, little is known about how people with PD (PwPD) and family caregivers (FC) experience the initiation process. This study explored PwPD and their FC perceptions during decision-making, therapy initiation, and subsequent adaptation to levodopa pump therapy. METHODS: This qualitative study

Chronic Pain and Opioids in the Elderly: Treating the Brain, Not Just the Body.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain, opioid use, and mental health disorders frequently co-occur in older adults, forming a complex and mutually reinforcing triad. Neurobiological ageing processes-such as neuroinflammation, dopaminergic decline, and impaired top-down regulation-may increase vulnerability to maladaptive coping strategies, including opioid misuse. This review aims to integrate neurobiological, affective, and clinical evidence to propose a unified neuropsychiatric framework for understanding the intersection between chronic pain, emotional distress, and opioid vulnerability in later life, w

Is dissociation predicting the efficacy of psychological therapies for PTSD? Results from a randomized controlled trial comparing Dialectical Behavior Therapy for PTSD (DBT-PTSD) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological evidence suggests that dissociation might disturb emotional learning, which is a fundamental mechanism of psychotherapy. However, a recent meta-analysis on the impact of dissociation on treatment outcomes in psychotherapy trials for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reported inconsistent results and concluded that further high-quality clinical trials are needed to test whether dissociation affects the efficacy of psychotherapies. We had two main aims: First, to test whether the efficacy of two evidence-based psychotherapies for individuals with trauma-related

Pre-treatment amygdala activation and habituation predict symptom change in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Trauma-focused psychotherapy approaches are the first-line treatment option for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, up to a third of patients remain symptomatic even after completion of the treatment. Predicting which patients will respond to a given treatment option would support personalized treatments and improve the efficiency of healthcare systems. Although previous neuroimaging studies have examined possible pre-treatment predictors of response to treatment, the findings have been somewhat inconsistent, and no other study has examined habituation to stimuli as a predictor. Culturally Meaningful End-of-Life Care for a Patient With Cancer of Unknown Primary, and Severe Motor and Intellectual Disabilities: A Case Report.

Geriatric and palliative care are becoming increasingly complex, particularly for patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). Cancer of unknown primary origin (CUP) is an aggressive malignancy that is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and requires individualized decision-making and careful integration of patient values into care planning. We report the case of a 68-year-old man with SMID who was diagnosed with peritoneal carcinomatosis of unknown primary origin, accompanied by pulmonary and splenic metastases and peritoneal implants. Because he was unable to express his

Home-Based Occupational Therapy Intervention for the Improvement of Quality of Life in Individuals With Moderate to Severe Dementia and Their Caregivers.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The quality of life (QoL) of individuals with dementia is influenced by their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), social engagement, and emotional well-being. Instrumental ADLs (IADLs) decline even in early stages, while basic ADLs (BADLs) are significantly affected in advanced stages. This study examined whether a home-based occupational therapy intervention improves QoL in people with dementia, reduces caregiver burden, depression, and anxiety, and enhances BADL performance. METHODS: Forty-nine participants with moderate to severe dementia were assi

Cognitive behavioral group therapy for social phobia with or without attention training: a controlled trial.

The Self-Regulatory Executive Function model [S-REF; Wells, A., & Matthews, G. (1996). Modelling cognition in emotional disorder: the S-REF model. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 34, 881-888] proposes that metacognitive beliefs, inflexible self-focused attention, and perseverative thinking (rumination and worry) play an important role in maintaining emotional dysfunction. Attention training [ATT; Wells, A. (1990). Panic disorder in association with relaxation induced anxiety: an attentional training approach to treatment. Anterior hippocampal volume predicts affect-focused psychotherapy outcome.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus plays an important role in psychopathology and treatment outcome. While posterior hippocampus (PH) may be crucial for the learning process that exposure-based treatments require, affect-focused treatments might preferentially engage anterior hippocampus (AH). Previous studies have distinguished the different functions of these hippocampal sub-regions in memory, learning, and emotional processes, but not in treatment outcome. Examining two independent clinical trials, we hypothesized that anterior hippocampal volume would predict outcome of affect-focused treatment o

Perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease: a call to action.

The advent of biological therapies has focused attention on the importance of healing luminal Crohn's disease, thereby modifying the disease course. Perianal fistulas are common in Crohn's disease and often have a poor prognosis, with permanent sphincter and perineal tissue destruction. The importance of healing these fistulas has been less well appreciated. Management still often is left in surgical hands alone, rather than the optimal combination of surgery, infection control, and immunosuppression. Drug therapy often is haphazard, and the means of assessing healing over a long time period h

Beyond muscle: Delivering RNA therapeutics to the CNS in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration due to mutations in the dystrophin gene. In addition to the well-known musculoskeletal, cardiac, and respiratory symptoms, DMD also involves significant central nervous system (CNS) manifestations, including cognitive, behavioral, and emotional deficits that profoundly affect patient quality of life. Despite advances in RNA-based therapies targeting muscle symptoms, CNS manifestations remain largely untreated. Preclinical studies in animal models have shown promising results in addre

Central effects of trigeminal electrical stimulation.

This is a review of the literature on the main neuromodulation techniques, focusing on the possibility of introducing sensory threshold ULFTENS into them. Electro neuromodulation techniques have been in use for many years as promising methods of therapy for cognitive and emotional disorders. One of the most widely used forms of stimulation for orofacial pain is transcutaneous trigeminal stimulation on three levels: supraorbital area, dorsal surface of the tongue, and anterior skin area of the tragus. The purpose of this review is to trigger interest on using dental ULFTENS as an additional tri
