[Amnesia and stiff-man syndrome. Manifestations disclosing paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis].

The authors report a case of hypertonia, the clinical and electrophysiological features of which were identical to those of the Stiff-man syndrome first described by Moersch and Woltman in 1956. This and the five other previously reported cases can be attributed to encephalomyelitis of the anterior horns of the spinal cord. All of these cases had severe but partial involvement of the anterior horns and the probable physiopathological mechanism of the resulting contractures was elective destruction of the small inhibitory neurones. In the present case, the association of a limbic encephalitis a…

Chronic, relapsing encephalomyelitis associated with experimental measles virus infection.

An experimental central nervous system (CNS) disease that bears some similarity to human multiple sclerosis and that is associated with infe … the virally infected animals. In summary, the disease, which has now been termed chronic, relapsing encephalomyelitis (CRE) is associated with neonatal CNS infection of hamsters with a particular strain of measles virus. CRE occurs in approximately 12% of animals that survive the acute viral infection, and of these affected animals about half develop detectable cli …

Chronic encephalomyelitis with specific increase in intrathecal mumps antibodies.

Symptoms of severe encephalomyelitis developed in a 31-year-old man in 1967. He had a high serum antibody titre to mumps virus associated with a polymorphic cell reaction and an increased protein concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). He recovered considerably within a year and was able to resume work. In 1975 his condition deteriorated again; it improved during the following few years, but a further deterioration then occurred. In March, 1981, the complement-fixing antibody titre to mumps virus was 1/32 in the serum and 1/4 in the CSF. In November, 1981, the CSF IgG index was increased a…

Central nervous system demyelination in Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis infection.

Arboviruses are important pathogens for both animals and humans. Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus (VEEV) is an arbovirus whose pathogenicity for grey matter structures has been previously studied. To our knowledge, the present study is the first to describe extensive inflammation and demyelination in spinal cord white matter of mice infected with VEEV. To probe a possible immunepathogenesis of white matter alterations in this infection, nude mice and heterozygous controls were similarly infected. Whereas controls still showed inflammatory demyelination, nude mice showed no white matte…

[Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in guinea pigs caused by meningococci].

The sensitization of guinea-pigs with the mixture of meningococci and heterologous-cerebral tissue commonly induces the development of the typical clinical and pathomorphological picture of allergic encephalomyelitis. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other acid-resistant bacterial and much like Bordetella pertussis, meningococci are capable of inducing allergic encephalomyelitis when introduced in mixture with oil without cerebral tissue. The vaccinal strain induces allergic encephalomyelitis with a more moderate course of the disease.

Kinetics of heat inactivation of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus.

Thermal inactivation of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus (VEEV) was studied at temperatures from 26 degrees to 55 degrees C. Inactivation of infectivity took place by two thermodynamically different reactions, one of which predominated at temperatures below 44 degrees C and the other at higher temperatures. The presence of 1 or 2 M NaCl stabilized the VEE virus at low temperatures but enhanced the inactivation at high temperatures. This latter effect at temperatures higher than 50 degrees C, is associated with the occurrence of two-component survival curves. The different effects of h…

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice: genetic control of susceptibility.

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in inbred and congenic strains of mice by injection of mouse spinal cord homogenate (MSCH) in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) with pertussis vaccine. Genetic analyses showed that susceptibility to EAE in mice was inherited as a dominant trait and was in part controlled by genes located in the centromeric half of the H-2 complex. Mice with EAE developed cell-mediated immune responsiveness to basic protein of myelin (BPM), as judged by the macrophage migration inhibition assay, using peritonealyexudate cells; this was not observed with…

[Neutralization of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus by anticellular serums].

The results of the study of host antigens in Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus by means of neutralization test in tissue culture using sera containing antibody for the species-specific antigens, Forssman antigen and group A and B antigens are presented. They show the inhibiting effect of the sera to be not uniform. The greatest neutralizing effect on the virus was exerted by immune sera to chick embryo fibroblasts and their fractions (by 0.5-3.9 lg PFU/ML). The lack of the virus neutralizing effect in sera for the Forssman antigen and for group A antigen appears to depend upon their de…

Experimental Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus infection of the bovine.

Two groups of four dairy cows (Bos taurus) were infected subcutaneously with the epizootic Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus (VEE) strains MF-8 and San Pelayo, respectively. Animals experienced no clinical illness, but all developed significant neutropenia. Virus was recovered once each from the blood of three animals but did not exceed 10(2.2) SMICLD(50) (Suckling mouse intracerebral lethal dose(50))/ml. Specific neutralizing antibodies appeared in the serum of all animals, but there were no significant differences in titers against different naturally occurring VEE subtypes. Dairy ca…

Cell surface antigen induced by venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus.

By immunofluorescence staining, a specific surface antigen induced by Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus was detected on L-929 cells. Formation of the antigen was independent of viral ribonucleic acid synthesis.
