The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the endodontic sealers: N-Rickert, Sealapex, AH Plus, Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and portland cement. The Agar diffusion method was used in plates previously inoculated with the following microorganisms: C. albicans, S. aureus, E. faecalis, E. coli. The diameters of microbial inhibition zones were measured after 24 hours of incubation in kiln at 37 degrees C. Apical periodontitis is a sequel to endodontic infection and manifests itself as the host defense response to microbial challenge emanating from the root canal system. OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to show the capacity of zinc oxide and eugenol to affect the growth of Aspergillus fumigatus.
STUDY DESIGN: An in vitro microbiological analysis was conducted on samples from infected maxillary sinuses and on 3 different endodontic sealers.
RESULTS: Tests showed that zinc oxide in solution favors the growth of Aspergillus fumigatus, while eugenol inhibits this growth, even when mixed with zinc oxide powder. This inhibiting effect decreases over time. A reduced effectiveness was demonstrated over a 75-day period.

BACKGROUND: The authors compared the levels of anticipated and experienced pain of patients who received endodontic therapy, or ET, with selected patient and dental characteristics.
METHODS: Sensory and affective pain outcome measures (pain and unpleasantness) were evaluated by 333 adult patients immediately before and after dental school faculty or residents performed ET. Dentists provided clinical evaluations and a pulpal diagnosis for each tooth and then rated the level of their patients' pain during treatment.

The periapical microbiota of 36 teeth with refractory apical periodontitis was investigated. None of the teeth had responded to conventional endodontic or long-term (> 6 months), calcium-hydroxide treatment. Eight patients had received antibiotics systemically. After anaerobic culture, a total of 148 microbial strains were detected among 67 microbial species. One of the 36 lesions was culture-negative. This overview was put together to update the endodontic knowledge of the general practitioners. Several treatment methods sometimes with contradicting principles are applied in Hungary using a wide range of endodontic medicines. Case reports of mandibular molars with iatrogenic perforations are presented. Such perforations have been treated with internal amalgam repair or by surgical intervention. However, the potential exists for tissue migration and pocket formation. The use of guided tissue regeneration as a barrier for apical migration is beneficial in surgical treatment of perforations. Follow-up examination of perforated teeth treated with resorbable barriers showed successful repair. This case report documents the treatment of an endodontic patient who experienced a type 1 hypersensitivity reaction to latex. The dental, medical, and environmental aspects of treating latex allergic patients are reviewed. Because gutta-percha and latex rubber are similar compounds, the possible cross-reactivity of these materials is discussed.

The microflora and humoral immune response in tissue from the periodontal pockets and root canals of five teeth with endodontic-periodontic lesions were examined. When a periapical lesion communicates with a deep periodontal pocket, the etiology can be either endodontic or periodontal. This article clarifies the relationship between pulpal and periodontal disease and presents a systematic approach to the diagnosis and management of endodontic-periodontal lesions. It also presents a case that demonstrates the successful treatment of teeth that appear to be hopelessly diseased.

An extension of conventional overdenture philosophy with the use of radicular attachments in endodontically treated teeth can be used to improve stability, reduce bony resorption and proprioception and augment retention. However, radicular attachments are not appropriate in all cases. Indications, requirements, advantages and disadvantages of this type of prosthesis are provided.
