We have previously shown that Entamoeba histolytica lysates contain the neurohormones serotonin, neurotensin, immunoreactive substance P, and probably acetylcholine, and that amebic lysates inhibit sodium and chloride absorption and stimulate chloride secretion in the rat descending colon as measured by the Ussing chamber-voltage clamp technique. Immunoprecipitation of Entamoeba histolytica proteins was performed with the sera of patients recovered from amebic liver abscess and colitis. The patients' amebic infection had been acquired in diverse areas of the world. The amebic galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine-inhibitable adherence lectin was the major amebic antigen immunoprecipitated. The adherence lectin was recognized by all of the patients' sera tested regardless of the site (liver abscess vs. colitis) or geographic region that the amebic infection had occurred.

The in vitro activity of drugs, namely dehydroemetine, ornidazole, metronidazole and tinidazole were determined against the locally isolated strains of E. histolytica in Thailand. The test was performed in liquid monophasic medium, i.e. liver marmite serum medium. In all, locally isolated strains from thirty hosts studied, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for dehydroemetine ranged from 0.125 to 1 microgram/ml, ornidazole ranged from 0.0625 to 0.25 microgram/ml, metronidazole ranged from 0.0625 to 0.125 microgram/ml, and tinidazole ranged from 0.0625 microgram/ml to 0.25 microgram/ml.

Two comparative studies of six staining techniques in detection of Entamoeba histolytica in rectal biopsies were performed. The techniques evaluated were direct and indirect fluorescent antibody technique, and four conventional stains: PAS, H & E, Trichrome, and PTAH).
