Pinworm in pregnancy.

A case of enterobiasis in pregnancy that presented as copious nocturnal vaginal discharge is reported. Enterobius vermicularis is the most common parasite infecting humans. Transmission can be fecal-oral or via fomites, and recently arrived immigrants from developing countries and individuals who live in households with young children are particularly at risk. Pinworms are most frequently found in the gastrointestinal tract but can also enter the vagina and bladder. Patients typically present with nocturnal anal itching, and diagnosis can be made by clinical history. Treatment includes an anti…

Helminth infection does not reduce risk for chronic inflammatory disease in a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Parasitic helminth infections can suppress symptoms of allergy, type 1 diabetes, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease in animal models. We analyzed data from a large, population-based cohort study to determine whether common childhood enterobiasis protects against these diseases. METHODS: We collected information on individual prescriptions filled for the drug mebendazole against Enterobius vermicularis for all children born in Denmark 1995-2008 from the National Register of Medicinal Product Statistics (n = 924,749; age 0-14 years); 132,383 of these children (14%) fil…

Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) in children and adults: a practice-oriented narrative review and household-school algorithm.

Enterobiasis (pinworm infection), caused by the nematode Enterobius vermicularis, remains among the most common helminth infections worldwide and disproportionately affects children and caregivers in households and institutional settings. Despite its high prevalence, practical guidance is often fragmented across primary care, pediatrics, and public-health sources. We conducted a SANRA-guided, clinician-oriented narrative review synthesizing evidence on the epidemiology and psychosocial burden of enterobiasis, transmission dynamics in households and educational settings, best available diagnost…

Enterobius Vermicularis infection of the appendix as a cause of acute appendicitis in a Greek adolescent: a case report.

Gastrointestinal infection due to Enterobius vermicularis occurs worldwide and is considered to be the most common helminth infection. The simple presence of E. vermicularis in the appendix usually produces symptoms of acute appendicitis. The association of this parasitic infestation with acute appendicitis varies from 0.2%-41.8% worldwide. We present a case of a 15 year old female with enterobiasis of appendix presented with clinical features of acute appendicitis. The appendix was surgically removed and the specimen was pathologically diagnosed to contain of E. vermicularis in non-inflamed a…

Parasitic infections and maternal awareness of preschool children in Karmouz district, Alexandria.

Intestinal parasitic infections are widespread especially among preschool children living in poor areas. Also pediculosis has been perceived … n followed by Enterobius vermicularis in 46%. A strong positive association between pediculosis and enterobiasis was detected (phi coefficient = 0.956, p < 0.001). Socioeconomic level affected both knowledge and practices scores where one point change in knowledge score or socioeconomic score caused an increase in practice score of 0.279 and 0.071, respectivel …

Co-structure analysis and genetic associations reveal insights into pinworms (Trypanoxyuris) and primates (Alouatta palliata) microevolutionary dynamics.

BACKGROUND: In parasitism arm race processes and red queen dynamics between host and parasites reciprocally mold many aspects of their genetics and evolution. We performed a parallel assessment of population genetics and demography of two species of pinworms with different degrees of host specificity (Trypanoxyuris multilabiatus, species-specific; and T. minutus, genus-specific) and their host, the mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata), based on mitochondrial DNA sequences and microsatellite loci (these only for the host). Given that pinworms and primates have a close co-evolutionary histo

Pruritus ani: an approach to an itching condition.

Pruritus ani is frequently encountered in children by the primary care physician and the pediatrician. It is mainly due to an infection with pinworms, but fecal soiling, poor hygiene, local irritation, and dietary agents should also be considered. Treatment should be directed at the underlying etiology. Once these have been excluded, both general and specific measures must be initiated. There is almost no experience for local treatment modalities in children, and they cannot currently be recommended.

[A case of Enterobius vermicularis salpingitis].

Enterobius vermicularis peritonitis due to intestinal infection is a common entity described in the literature. We report here an unusual case of unilateral salpingitis associated with the parasite migration through the genital tract.

Coincidence of acute amoebic appendicitis and enterobius vermicularis infestation.

BACKGROUND: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a rare skin disease, mostly seen on the legs and often occurring in patients with diabetes mellitus. The disease belongs to the idiopathic cutaneous palisading granulomatous dermatitides associated with a degeneration of collagen, thus leading to skin atrophy. Application of topical corticosteroids is the most widely used treatment but the results are not always satisfactory and may worsen skin atrophy. Preliminary studies in patients with NL have shown a clinical response with psoralen plus ultraviolet (UV) A (PUVA). Objectives To study the effect of

Characterization of antigens of Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) eggs.

Enterobiasis (pinworm infection) caused by Enterobius vermicularis is a common parasitic infection prevalent worldwide especially in children. Infection is diagnosed by microscopic detection of E. vermicularis eggs on perianal swabs. This study aimed to characterize the antigens of E. vermicularis eggs as a preliminary step towards identifying diagnostic targets for detection in infected individuals. The study was conducted between October 2019 and February 2020, following approval from Ethics Review Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo (EC-19-034). E. vermicularis eggs …
