Epidemiology, etiologic factors, and prenatal diagnosis of open spinal dysraphism.

The caudal neural tube closes late in the first month after fertilization and failure of it results in myelomeningocele. Epidemiologic studies have shown differences in prevalence at birth based on ethnic-racial backgrounds and geography. Etiologic factors include the drug valproic acid or carbamazepine. Periconceptional folic acid supplementation appears to decrease the prevalence of neural tube defects. Numerous modalities allow for prenatal diagnosis of myelomeningocele. A cesarean section, before rupture of amniotic membranes and onset of labor, decreases the degree of paralysis.

[Smoking as a risk factor in pregnancy? Epidemiology of smoking and sequelae in pregnancy].

There's a controversy in the discussion concerning the effects of smoking in pregnancy. To find out, how many women smoke in pregnancy, to which social class they belong and which influence smoking has on perinatal outcome, we analysed more than 140,000 pregnancies registered in the Lower Saxony Perinatal Survey from 1980 to 1985. About 25% of these women smoked in pregnancy. This rate and the number of cigarettes remained unchanged within the six years. Women from lower social class, young and single pregnants smoked the most. Gestational age did not change, but children of smokers were small

An overview of stroke. Epidemiology, classification, risk factors, clinical aspects.

Although evidence indicates that the incidence of stroke has declined over the past 30 years, stroke remains one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. Prevention appears to be the best treatment. According to the Straub Stroke Registry, 52% of strokes in its patient population can be attributed to a thrombotic mechanism. Besides thrombosis, the major causes of stroke are embolism, lacunar infarct, cerebellar infarction, and hemorrhage. Hypertension is a widely recognized risk factor for stroke, but the risks vary for each type of stroke. Transient ischemic attacks

Subarachnoid hemorrhage: epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, and clinical therapies.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is an extremely lethal cerebrovascular emergency that can lead to severe long term neurological deficits. Modern research evidence indicates that the incidence of SAH varies significantly across different regions and populations, and this variation is determined by the interaction between non-modifiable factors (such as age, gender, family history, and genetic susceptibility) and modifiable factors (such as hypertension, smoking, drug use, and metabolic disorders). Advancements in vascular biology and genomics further suggest that extracellular matrix instability,

Global epidemiology of ovarian cancer: patterns, trends, and risk factors.

Ovarian cancer was the eighth most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 2022. The global age-standardized incidence rate of ovarian cancer decreased from 7.22/100,000 to 6.71/100,000 from 1990 to 2021. However, incidence trends varied across countries. Declining ovarian cancer incidence rates were reported in high-income countries, such as the United States, Austria, the Netherlands, and Norway, while there were increasing incidence rates in Africa and parts of Asia, including Japan and India. The global age-standardized mortality rate of ovarian cancer decreased from 4.73/100,000 to 4.0

Epidemiology of and Risk Factors for Amebic Meningoencephalitis, Kerala, India, 2025.

Amebic meningoencephalitis (AME) is a highly fatal central nervous system infection caused by various free-living amebae. We describe epidemiology of AME cases from Kerala, India, during January 1-November 11, 2025, and identify behavioral risk factors associated with real-time PCR-confirmed Acanthamoeba spp. infection through a matched case-control study. We identified 159 AME case-patients, of which 67 (42.1%) tested positive for Acanthamoeba spp. amebae. Most AME cases were reported from 4 districts, peaking during the monsoon and postmonsoon periods. Exposure to natural water bodies for sw

The epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease: exploring the impacts of environmental factors.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are distinct chronic immune-mediated intestinal inflammatory disorders. The pathogenesis of IBD is complex and involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors, the gut microbiome, and the host immune system. Despite significant progress in identifying the genetic factors of IBD, the increasing IBD incidence in recent decades, along with findings from immigrant and twin studies, suggest the involvement of environmental factors on IBD susceptibility. In this review, we summarize various up-to-date envi

Multi-Study Factor Regression Model: An Application in Nutritional Epidemiology.

Diet is a risk factor for many diseases. In nutritional epidemiology, studying reproducible dietary patterns is critical to reveal important associations with health. However, this task is challenging: diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds may critically impact eating patterns by showing heterogeneity, leading to incorrect dietary patterns and obscuring the components shared across different groups or populations. Moreover, covariate effects generated from observed variables, such as demographics and other confounders, can further bias these dietary patterns. Identifying the shared and group

Epidemiology and risk factors for hypopituitarism due to traumatic brain injury.

During the last two decades traumatic brain injury (TBI) was also found as an important cause of hypopituitarism. Although the most common causes of TBI are traffic accidents and falls, others such as blast-related injuries, acts of violence and combative sports are also considered in the etiology. TBI may lead to transient or permanent pituitary dysfunction. The definition of TBI-induced hypopituitarism cover alterations in pituitary hormone levels which may occur even after five years of injury and characterised by hormonal deficiencies but rarely recovery of some hormones during the course

Chronic pancreatitis as a driving factor for pancreatic cancer: An epidemiological understanding.

The retrospective study by Lew et al (2022) examined the rising hospitalization rates for chronic pancreatitis (CP) and its association with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), revealing significant ethno-racial disparities and risk factors. Overweight black men aged 40-59 years and white men over 40 years with higher incomes showed an elevated risk of PDAC among CP patients. The study, which included 14.2 million admissions from 2016-2017, found that 2.6% of adult patients were diagnosed with CP, with white males being the majority. Multivariate regression analysis identified men, black

Lentigo maligna part I: Epidemiology, risk factors, and diagnosis.

Lentigo maligna (LM) is an increasingly common subtype of melanoma, presenting as a slow-growing tan-brown macule or patch with irregular borders arising on chronically solar-damaged skin. This 2-part continuing medical education series provides an overview of LM. Part I reviews LM's epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical presentation. Clinical tools to aid in diagnosis - such as dermoscopy and reflectance confocal microscopy - are discussed, as well as optimal biopsy strategies. Histopathology and current understanding of molecular underpinnings are also reviewed. Management of LM presents

HPV and Penile Cancer: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Clinical Insights.

Penile cancer (PC) is a rare malignancy predominantly of squamous cell origin. Approximately 40% of penile tumors are associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Diagnosing PC remains challenging due to its rarity and variety of clinical presentations. Furthermore, the impact of HPV on the tumor immune microenvironment complicates clinical management, although recent advancements in immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown some efficacy in treating HPV-associated PC. Ongoing research efforts aim to develop oncologic treatments that target HPV-induced cellular modifications. Add

Differences and Similarities in Epidemiology and Risk Factors for Cutaneous and Uveal Melanoma.

Both cutaneous melanoma (CM) and uveal melanoma (UM) represent important causes of morbidity and mortality. In this review, we evaluate the available knowledge on the differences and similarities between cutaneous melanoma and uveal melanoma, focusing on the epidemiological aspects and risk factors. Uveal melanoma is a rare condition but is the most prevalent primary intra-ocular malignant tumor in adults. Cutaneous melanoma, on the other hand, is significantly more common. While the frequency of cutaneous melanoma has increased in the last decades worldwide, the incidence of uveal melanoma ha
