INTRODUCTION: Monitoring of population mental health is now considered to play a vital role in health, risk factor and demographic surveillance systems across the globe. Adopting a public mental health perspective on monitoring and surveillance requires us to consider the entire spectrum of mental health, which broadly ranges from positive mental health and well-being to severe mental disorders, including at-risk populations. This population mental health approach has become the mainstay of public mental health provision in many European countries but there is a dearth of research on this issu

Myasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax larvae (Coquerel, 1858), represents a significant sanitary and economic challenge under the One Health approach, affecting human health, livestock production, and biodiversity. Studies on the spatial ecology and distribution of this species in South America (SA) have been scarce. This study aimed to model real and potential suitability areas for C. hominivorax in SA, based on myiasis cases in humans and other vertebrates reported in the scientific literature. The MaxEnt model was developed using WorldClim bioclimatic variables clipped to SA, with 1,000

Fasciola hepatica is an internal parasite of both human and veterinary relevance. In order to control fasciolosis, a multitude of attempts to predict the risk of infection such as risk maps or forecasting models have been developed. These attempts mainly focused on the influence of geo-climatic and meteorological features. Predicting bovine fasciolosis on farm level taking into account farm-specific settings yet remains challenging. In the present study, a new methodology for this purpose, a data-driven machine learning approach using a random forest classification algorithm was applied to a c

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the Leishmania parasite and transmitted by the Phlebotominae subfamily of sandflies, which infects humans and other mammals. Clinical manifestations of the disease include cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL) with a majority (more than three-quarters) of worldwide cases being CL. There are a number of risk factors for CL, such as the presence of multiple reservoirs, the movement of individuals, inequality, and social determinants of health. However, studies related to the role of

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) care and treatment contribute greatly to the patients' fatality and mortality. Assessing and monitoring mortalities and the effective factors are necessary in MI care and treatment programs. No comprehensive and population-based study has yet been conducted in Iran to determine the epidemiological pattern of MI, and particularly in-hospital mortality rate and the effective factors.
AIM: To determine the epidemiological pattern of MI based on person-, time-, place-, and mortality-associated risk factors.
METHODS: This was a prospective, population-based

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV transmission; yet, many people who would benefit from PrEP are not currently using it. Numerous programs and policies, including those provided under the US Ending the HIV Epidemic effort, have been implemented to increase PrEP use. Programs vary enormously, ranging from telemedicine PrEP support to electronic medical record prompts to social marketing and messaging campaigns. However, limited evidence exists regarding their relative impact on PrEP uptake.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of the PREMISE (PrEP Epidemiology, M

INTRODUCTION: Global human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence among women rose significantly from 14% (2019) to 24% (2024), underscoring the need to understand transmission dynamics and public health impact. Although multi-genotype infections are increasingly documented, evidence remains limited on their combined effect on cervical lesion severity and transmission, especially in regional populations. Using clinical datasets from Xiamen, China, this study evaluates co-infection patterns through integrated statistical and dynamical models to quantify associations with histological severity and tran

THE AIM OF THE WORK: The aim of our work was to describe the current epidemiological situation of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) with a possible global prediction for the year 2040.
METHODS: We obtained data on incidence and mortality of HL using the GLOBOCAN database. The rating was done specifically for men and women and together, with an age range of 0-85+ years. For the possibility of international comparison, the data are evaluated in the format of age standardized incidence/mortality (Age Standardized Rate - ASR) related to the world population - ASR (W).
RESULTS: In the period 2000-2010, the

BACKGROUND: Human and animal African trypanosomiases impose a large economic and health burden in their endemic regions. Large strides have been made in the control of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), yet these efforts have largely focused on the non-zoonotic form of the disease. Using a mathematical model with a 10 year time horizon, we demonstrate the role of the cattle treatment with trypanocides in the epidemiology of zoonotic and non-zoonotic HAT in Uganda, and its potential implications on elimination and eradication of the disease.

Decades after public health interventions - including pre- and post-exposure vaccination - were used to eradicate smallpox, zoonotic orthopoxvirus outbreaks and the potential threat of a release of variola virus remain public health concerns. Routine prophylactic smallpox vaccination of the public ceased worldwide in 1980, and the adverse event rate associated with the currently licensed live vaccinia virus vaccine makes reinstatement of policies recommending routine pre-exposure vaccination unlikely in the absence of an orthopoxvirus outbreak. Consequently, licensing of safer vaccines and the

BACKGROUND: Natural history models of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and disease have been used in a number of policy evaluations of technologies to prevent and screen for HPV disease (e.g., cervical cancer, anogenital warts), sometimes with wide variation in values for epidemiologic and clinical inputs. The objectives of this study are to: (1) Provide an updated critical and systematic review of the evidence base to support epidemiologic and clinical modeling of key HPV disease-related parameters in the context of an HPV multi-type disease transmission model which we have applied within

BACKGROUND: In low-incidence hospital settings, airborne isolation capacity is limited. We developed a clinical-epidemiological model to estimate active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) probability among adults already selected for PTB evaluation, using information available before definitive diagnostic testing.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive adults who underwent microbiological testing for suspected PTB and were managed with airborne precautions at a university hospital in Rome from January 2016 through December 2021 (n=682 complete cases). A LASSO-penalized logistic regression

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major public health concern, with Tennessee ranking among the U.S. states with the highest prevalence. Despite its burden, many cases remain undetected due to limited screening and access to mental health services. This study integrated epidemiologic modelling and explainable ML techniques to predict self-reported depression and identify key risk factors among Tennessee adults using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2023 data.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 5596 adults from the 2023 Tennessee BRFSS, representing 5,569,707 w

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic viral disease that causes epidemics and epizootics among humans and livestock, resulting in substantial health and socioeconomic consequences. Currently, there are no RVF vaccines licensed for humans, but several candidates show promise in early-stage development. Existing gaps in RVF epidemiological data and challenges associated with predicting RVF outbreak risk complicate the planning of efficacy studies, making the pathway to licensure for promising candidates unclear. In June 2024, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) convened a
