In vitro cultivation of Babesia caballi genotype B2 and its genetic, growth, and morphological characterization.

The genotypic diversity of Babesia caballi, comprising three genotypes, namely A, B1, and B2, presents challenges for managing equine piroplasmosis. Therefore, research on individual B. caballi genotype is essential, but has been constrained by the lack of in vitro cultures representing genotypes other than the widely studied genotype A. In the present study, we established in vitro cultures of two B. caballi isolates from donkeys in Sri Lanka. Based on 18S rRNA and rhoptry associated protein-1 (rap-1) gene sequences, the isolates were identified as genotypes B2 and A, and designated NRCPD-B2

Anti-inflammatory and gut modulating effects of donkey whey protein in dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis mice: Insights from the various processing methods.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), presents therapeutic challenges due to the limitations and side effects of current treatments, creating a need for safer and more effective alternatives. Despite several studies on the health benefits of donkey milk, its specific impact on UC remains unsolved. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of donkey whey protein (DWP), a bioactive-rich functional food, in alleviating UC symptoms in a mouse model of dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis. The DWP was processed using thermal and nonthermal techniques, includ

Molecular prevalence and associated risk factors of Entamoeba spp. in donkeys in Shanxi Province, North China.

BACKGROUND: The intestinal protozoa Entamoeba spp. can infect humans and various animals, including donkeys, causing diarrhea and malabsorption and presenting significant risks to animal husbandry and public health. Most Entamoeba species are not pathogenic except for Entamoeba histolytica. China has among the highest rates of donkey farming worldwide. Donkey (Equus asinus) farming is increasingly important in China because of their draft and medicinal value; however, epidemiological data on Entamoeba spp. in donkeys remains limited globally. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of E

Metabolomic profiling of Dezhou donkey sperm associated with freezability.

The cryopreservation technology of sperm has promoted the popularization of artificial insemination in the reproductive process of donkeys to a certain extent, but the freezing-thawing process would bring damage to the sperm, and the vitality of the sperm would be greatly reduced after freezing. Sperm metabolites play an important role in the process of sperm freezing, and also have an important impact on the vitality and fertilization rate of sperm after freezing-thawing. In this study, the LC-MS/MS analysis method was used to compare the metabolic profiles of high freezability (HF) and low f

Detection and Molecular Characterization of Two Gammaherpesviruses from Pantesco Breed Donkeys during an Outbreak of Mild Respiratory Disease.

Equid and asinine gammaherpesviruses (GHVs; genus Percavirus) are members of the Herpesviridae family. Though GHVs have been reported in horse populations, less studies are available on gammaherpesviral infections in donkeys. This study reports the co-infection with two GHVs in Pantesco breed donkeys, an endangered Italian donkey breed. Samples (n = 124) were collected on a breeding farm in Southern Italy from 40 donkeys, some of which were healthy or presented erosive tongue lesions and/or mild respiratory signs. Samples were analysed by using a set of nested PCRs targeting the DNA polymerase

Comparative expression of cell adhesion molecule1 (CADM1) in the testes of experimental mice and some farm animals.

Cell adhesion molecule1 (CADM1) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IGSF) that has been found in mammalian testis and plays a substantial role in cell-to-cell interaction via either hemophilic (between spermatogenic cells) or heterophilic (between spermatogenic and somatic Sertoli cells) binding. The present study investigated the immunohistochemical localization of CADM1 in the testes of adult mice (Mus musculus), as well as sexually mature bull (Bos taurus), camel (Camelus dromedarius), and donkey (Equus asinus), using immunohistochemical techniques. The results revealed that CADM

Prevalence and genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in donkeys in northeastern China.

Toxolasma gondii is one of the most important obligate intracellular protozoan parasites. Recently, toxoplasmosis is of increasing concerns because T. gondii not only has a worldwide distribution but also can infect virtually all warm-blooded hosts including donkeys. However, limited information is available concerning the genetic characterization of T. gondii in donkeys in northeastern China. In this study, a total of 302 brain tissue samples collected from donkeys from Jilin (n=108) and Liaoning (n=194) provinces, northeastern China, were examined for T. gondii infection by semi-nested PCR o

DESCRIPTION OF GASTRIC ULCERS AND OF THEIR SUSPECTED, ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS IN DECEASED WILD EQUIDS AT THE RÉSERVE AFRICAINE DE SIGEAN, FRANCE (2010-2016).

Gastric ulcers are common in domestic horses and foals, affecting at least 90% of unmedicated racehorses in active training. Despite these high prevalences in domestic horses, literature about this condition in wild equids is almost nonexistent. The presence of gastric ulcers was evaluated at necropsy in six species of wild equids that died at the Réserve Africane de Sigean, a safari park in the south of France from 2010 to 2016. Among the 55 individuals that died during that period, a description of the gastric mucosa was available in 82% (45/55) of cases. Considering the cases for which a de

Epidemiologic analysis of a sarcoid outbreak involving 12 of 111 donkeys in Northern Italy.

Equine sarcoids develop upon bovine papillomavirus type 1 or 2 (BPV1, BPV2) infection in conjunction with trauma and represent the most common tumour disease in horses and other equids, including donkeys. In face of a sarcoid outbreak involving 12 of 111 donkeys and mules at the 'Rifugio degli Asinelli', a subsidiary charity organization of The Donkey Sanctuary, non-invasively collected sample material including crusts, dandruff, swabs and hair roots was collected from sarcoid-affected and 26 healthy donkeys, as well as dandruff from a grooming kit and tabanids caught from or in the vicinity o

Seasonal infestation of donkeys by lice: phenology, risk factors and management.

A longitudinal study was undertaken over a 21 months period to examine the seasonal abundance of lice infesting donkeys, the risk factors which predispose donkeys to infestation and the effectiveness of louse management. All the lice seen were Bovicola (Werneckiella) ocellatus. A strong seasonal pattern, which was correlated with mean monthly temperature, was observed with higher prevalence and intensity in the cooler, winter months (October-March). Overall infestation in these animals was over-dispersed, suggesting that some individuals are strongly predisposed to infestation. Donkey age and

Control of the chewing louse Bovicola (Werneckiella) ocellatus in donkeys, using essential oils.

Infestations by lice can be a significant clinical and welfare issue in the management of large animals. The limited range of commercial pediculicides available and the development of resistance have led to the need to explore alternative louse management approaches. The results of in vitro and in vivo trials undertaken to control populations of the donkey chewing louse, Bovicola ocellatus (Piaget) (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) using the essential oils of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) are reported here.
