[Senegal's experience with pacemakers re-use : about 161 patients at the Aristide Le Dantec university hospital center].

INTRODUCTION: The reuse pacemakers is a beneficial technique for patients in countries with a low economic standard of living where health care is almost non-existent. We offered to share the experience of Senegal on the reconditioning of pacemakers. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a retrospective study over a period from January 2015 to December 2020 including all patients who benefited from a reconditioned pacemaker for primary implantation or reimplantation. The criteria for reconditioning pacemakers are the absence of dysfunction or damage and a residual battery life of more than 5 years of the

Vapourized hydrogen peroxide decontamination in a hospital setting inactivates SARS-CoV-2 and HCoV-229E without compromising filtration efficiency of unexpired N95 respirators.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for evidence-based approaches to decontamination and reuse of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). We sought to determine whether vapourized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) reduced SARS-CoV-2 bioburden on FFRs without compromising filtration efficiency. We also investigated coronavirus HCoV-229E as a surrogate for decontamination validation testing. METHODS: N95 FFRs were laced with SARS-CoV-2 or HCoV-229E and treated with VHP in a hospital reprocessing facility. After sterilization, viral burden was determined using viral outgrowth in a t

A regenerative electrochemical sensor based on oligonucleotide for the selective determination of mercury(II).

We have developed a selective, sensitive, and re-usable electrochemical sensor for Hg2+ ion detection. This sensor is based on the Hg2+-induced conformational change of a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) which involves an electroactive, ferrocene-labeled DNA hairpin structure and provides strategically the selective binding of a thymine-thymine mismatch for the Hg2+ ion. The ferrocene-labeled DNA is self-assembled through S-Au bonding on a polycrystalline gold electrode surface and the surface blocked with 3-mercapto-1-propanol to form a mixed monolayer. The modified electrode showed a voltammetric

Personal protective equipment use among dental healthcare personnel during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the impact of an educational video in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: Dental healthcare personnel (DHCP) are at high risk of exposure to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We sought to identify how DHCP changed their use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to pilot an educational video designed to improve knowledge of proper PPE use. DESIGN: The study comprised 2 sets of semistructured qualitative interviews. SETTING: The study was conducted in 8 dental clinics in a Midwestern metropolitan area. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 70 DHCP participated in the first set of interviews; 63 DHCP participated in the sec

Selection of parameters for thermal coronavirus inactivation - a data-based recommendation.

Background: Healthcare workers and large parts of the population are currently using personal protective equipment, such as face masks, to avoid infections with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. This equipment must be sterilized as gently as possible before reuse. One possibility is thermal inactivation, but professional autoclaves with their high temperatures are often not available or suitable. If the inactivation period is long enough, coronavirus inactivation can also be carried out at relatively low temperatures. The required duration was determined in this study. Material and methods: Da

Conceptualizing a novel Hybrid Decontamination System (HDS) based on UV/H2O2 treatment for the enhanced decontamination and reuse of N95 FFRs.

The ongoing Pandemic of COVID-19 caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has severely stressed the worldwide healthcare system and has created dangerous shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) including N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). Even though suppliers struggled to meet global demand for N95 masks at an unprecedented level, a shortage of FFR appears as a significant factor in the transmission of the disease to frontline workers. CDC, USA has mentioned that FFR decontamination and reuse may be necessary during times of shortage to ensure g

Effectiveness and Recommendations for the Use of Dental Masks in the Prevention of COVID-19: A Literature Review.

The purpose of this investigation was to identify, synthesize, and compare all the current information on the efficacy of dental masks, emphasizing their use, types, and filters to prevent the spread and infection of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. A bibliographic search of the main scientific databases was carried out using the words "masks, COVID-19, and dentistry." Articles without language restriction up to May 31, 2020, were obtained. The types of masks, their half-life, method to use, sterilization, and proposed alternatives for dental masks were analyzed. Most of the articles re

[Implementation of effective infection control: furnishing a -dental practice].

The increasing resistance to antibiotics and the aging of the population of patients who visit the dental practice can lead to more frequent infections with (resistant) microorganisms. The prevention of cross contamination by the implementation of effective measures in the area of hygiene and procedures of infection control is therefore important. The furnishing of a dental practice can play an important part in prevention. What are the important issues in furnishing a practice? A distinction is made between 'critical' and 'non-critical' rooms. Patients are only treated and instruments are onl

[Hospital practice and prion risks].

Procedures applicable in France for the prevention of prion diseases were first implemented in 1995, resulting from the threat of an epidemic extension of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) following contamination resulting from the use of extracted growth hormone. It was found later that the bovine disease could infect humans via foodstuffs, and the human variant of the disease (v-CJD) transmissible through lymphoid formations was described in 1996. This led to generalizing precautions to a larger number of medical interventions, taking into account the risk for a population more broadly exposed

Reuse and Biocompatibility of Hemodialysis Membranes: Clinically Relevant?

The practice of reprocessing dialyzers for reuse, once predominant in the United States, has been steadily declining over the last 20 years. The professed roles of reuse in improving dialyzer membrane biocompatibility and lowering the risk of first-use syndrome have lost relevance with the advent of biocompatible dialyzer membranes and favorable sterilization techniques. The potential for cost-savings from reuse is also called into question by the easy availability of comparatively cheaper dialyzers and rising regulatory demands and operational cost of reprocessing systems. While the environme

Randomized Comparison of 3 High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization Procedures for Duodenoscopes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Duodenoscopes have been implicated in the transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO). We compared the frequency of duodenoscope contamination with MDRO or any other bacteria after disinfection or sterilization by 3 different methods. METHODS: We performed a single-center prospective randomized study in which duodenoscopes were randomly reprocessed by standard high-level disinfection (sHLD), double high-level disinfection (dHLD), or standard high-level disinfection followed by ethylene oxide gas sterilization (HLD/ETO). Samples were collected from the elevator me

Design, manufacture, and testing of customized sterilizable respirator.

The respirator as one of the personal protective equipment is essential for industrial activities (e.g., mining, painting, woodcutting, manufacturing) for protection from contaminants in the air and during the Covid-19 pandemic to protect the wearer from infection. The respirators nowadays are commonly made of rigid plastic. They are expensive, cumbersome, and not comfortable to wear. The many components with complex structures prevent it from cleaning and reusing. We develop a practical and scalable strategy to create customized respirators with durability using computational modeling and 3D

Reusable single-port access device shortens operative time and reduces operative costs.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, single-port laparoscopy (SPL) has become an attractive approach for performing surgical procedures. The pitfalls of this approach are technical and financial. Financial concerns are due to the increased cost of dedicated devices and prolonged operating room time. Our aim was to calculate the cost of SPL using a reusable port and instruments in order to evaluate the cost difference between this approach to SPL using the available disposable ports and standard laparoscopy. METHODS: We performed 22 laparoscopic procedures via the SPL approach using a reusable single-

Transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease to a chimpanzee by electrodes contaminated during neurosurgery.

Stereotactic multicontact electrodes used to probe the cerebral cortex of a middle aged woman with progressive dementia were previously implicated in the accidental transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) to two younger patients. The diagnoses of CJD have been confirmed for all three cases. More than two years after their last use in humans, after three cleanings and repeated sterilisation in ethanol and formaldehyde vapour, the electrodes were implanted in the cortex of a chimpanzee. Eighteen months later the animal became ill with CJD. This finding serves to re-emphasise the potentia

Correct Use of Facemask Among Health Professionals in the Context of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

PURPOSE: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) mainly spreads through respiratory droplets and close contacts. Wearing a facemask and other personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential in preventing the spread of COVID-19. However, the use of PPE alone does not provide a sufficient level of protection, and correct use and disposal are required. Hence, this study aimed to assess health professionals' practice regarding proper use of facemask in the perspectives of COVID-19 prevention. METHODS: A web-based online survey was conducted from June 3, 2020, to August 11, 2020, to assess health professi
