Erythema multiforme (EM) is an acute self-limiting mucocutaneous condition of uncertain etiopathogenesis. The most common precipitating factors are herpes simplex virus infection, mycoplasma infection, drugs, and vaccination. We report a case of EM following sildenafil used for loss of libido. EM induced by sildenafil has not been reported so far.

QUESTION: In my office I occasionally see children who have rashes with "target lesions" and who are diagnosed with erythema multiforme (EM). When should these children receive steroids, and when should the illness be allowed to follow its natural course without steroid treatment?
ANSWER: Erythema multiforme is relatively common in children. Current recommendations suggest not to treat EM minor with systemic steroids and that topical steroids might be of benefit. The use of systemic steroids for EM major remains controversial, as there is evidence both for and against treatment, and no random…

UNLABELLED: A total of 42 children with erythema multiforme (aged 0.1 to 15.8 years, median 6.1 years) were treated between 1978 and 1997 at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Bern, Switzerland. Antecedent infections were noted in 30 cases: Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection (n = 14), acute upper respiratory tract disease (n = 10) and herpes simplex infection (n = 6). Four cases were associated with antecedent medication (n = 3) or immunization (n = 1). In 12 of the 30 patients in whom erythema multiforme followed an infectious disease, drugs described in the literature as inducers of e…

The clinical histories of twenty children hospitalized for erythema multiforme (EM) were reviewed. Three forms of the illness were defined according to clinical criteria: minor (EMm), intermediate (EMt) and major (EMM). Previous infections were associated with the process in 30% of the cases, administration of drugs also in 30%, and a combination of the two factors in 30% of the subjects. No specific etiology was found in two cases (10%). Respiratory tract symptoms and general discomfort preceded the EMM form, and evidence of digestive organ involvement was frequent in the EMm form. Erythrocyt…

Erythema multiforme is said to be rare in childhood and especially in early infancy. Three infants, none older than 1 year, were seen with this condition; all showed typical clinical features. In one of the three infants, no distinctive etiological factor(s) could be found. One was suffering from congenital hepatitis (cause unknown) and another from a staphylococcal infection.

Erythema multiforme (EM) is clinically characterized by a "minor" form and a "major" form. The latter is known as the Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Infections (particularly herpes simplex and Mycoplasma pneumoniae) and drugs seem to predispose toward the development of EM. The pathogenesis is poorly understood. The treatment is supportive. Prognosis varies with the severity of the eruption. Recurrences are commonly seen.
