Avian reflex and electroencephalogram responses in different states of consciousness.

Defining states of clinical consciousness in animals is important in veterinary anaesthesia and in studies of euthanasia and welfare assessment at slaughter. The aim of this study was to validate readily observable reflex responses in relation to different conscious states, as confirmed by EEG analysis, in two species of birds under laboratory conditions (35-week-old layer hens (n=12) and 11-week-old turkeys (n=10)). We evaluated clinical reflexes and characterised electroencephalograph (EEG) activity (as a measure of brain function) using spectral analyses in four different clinical states of

Ayurveda in the integrative management of bovine secondary recumbency-a case report.

Downer cow syndrome, or secondary recumbency, is a condition primarily affecting dairy cows, where the animal is unable to rise and stand, due to unknown cause. It is usually associated with poor prognosis. Terminal downers are euthanized in most countries. A four-year old Kasarkode dwarf-cow, post-calving was brought up laterally recumbent with heavy nasal discharge, labored breathing, loss of appetite and signs of dehydration on 6th day of its recumbency. Before this, the patient was diagnosed with milk fever and standard treatment with calcium borogluconate was administered intravenously. T

The ameliorating effect of dantrolene on the morphology of urinary bladder in spinal cord injured rats.

In animal models of spinal cord injury (SCI), the urinary bladder can undergo significant structural and physiological alterations. Dantrolene has been shown to be neuroprotective by reducing neuronal apoptosis after SCI. Furthermore, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it appears to have a beneficial action on voiding, once this drug acts on the external urethral sphincter relaxation. In the present study, we investigated the effects of dantrolene on urinary bladder injury that follows experimental SCI. Forty-six male Wistar rats were laminectomized at T13, and a

Mucosal Challenge Ferret Models of Ebola Virus Disease.

Recent studies have shown the domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) to be a promising small animal model for the study of Ebola virus (EBOV) disease and medical countermeasure evaluation. To date, most studies have focused on traditional challenge routes, predominantly intramuscular and intranasal administration. Here, we present results from a non-clinical pathogenicity study examining oronasal, oral, and ocular mucosal challenge routes in ferrets. Animals were challenged with 1, 10, or 100 plaque forming units EBOV followed by monitoring of disease progression and biosampling. Ferrets admi

Laboratory diagnosis of equine rabies and its implications for human postexposure prophylaxis.

Laboratory diagnosis is essential to confirm suspected cases of equine rabies and to determine the medical care needed for human postexposure antirabies prophylaxis. Equine rabies transmitted by the vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, has increased gradually in the State of São Paulo. The present study has several objectives, the most important being the evaluation of fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and virus-isolation laboratory tests performed with different equine nervous system tissues (cortical, hippocampus, cerebellar, brainstem and cervical medullar) to determine the tissue for which the tw

The role of pressure damage in pathogenesis of the downer cow syndrome.

Experimental downer cows were produced by maintaining healthy cows in sternal recumbency for 6, 9, or 12 hours with the right pelvic limb positioned under the body. Halothane anesthesia was used to create this artificial parturient paresis-like position. In 8 of 16 experiments, cows were able to stand within 3 hours after anesthesia, but the others remained recumbent until death or euthanasia. There was no correlation between duration of the treatment and ability to stand after enforced recumbency. The appearance of the right pelvic limb of downer cows resembled the injured limbs of human pati

Antibiotic-Loaded Polymer-Calcium Phosphate Scaffold for Treating Orthopedic Device-Related Infection in a Rabbit Segmental Bone Defect Model.

Treatment of orthopedic device-related infection (ORDI) generally requires a combination of medical and surgical interventions for successful treatment outcomes. Many cases are treated with a two-stage revision, whereby contaminated implants and necrotic tissues are removed, and dead space is managed with a temporary, non-resorbable polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) spacer loaded with antibiotics. Weeks later, this is replaced with a bone graft or similar material to aid bone healing. However, this two-stage approach is quite a burden for the patient, and infection may still recur. The use of a 3

Focal knee resurfacing and effects of surgical precision on opposing cartilage. A pilot study on 12 sheep.

BACKGROUND: Full thickness cartilage lesions (ICRS grade 3-4) and focal lesions of degenerative origin may progress to osteoarthritis (OA). Such focal lesions can be treated by metallic implants. We hypothesized that such treatment results in opposing surface cartilage damage that correlates with implant position (height) relative to the adjacent cartilage surface. This relationship was investigated using a sheep animal model. METHODS: Both medial femoral condyles of 12 sheep were operated. The implants, were inserted in the weight-bearing surface at different heights relative to the surround

A standardized in vivo protocol for ocular biodistribution of gold nanoparticles.

Effective drug administration plays a pivotal role in the treatment of eye diseases. Each route of ocular administration has its advantages and limitations, but a common challenge is the low bioavailability of drugs at the target sites. New delivery nanosystems are required to ensure sufficient drug concentration over time at the target in order to improve therapeutic efficacy. Gold nanoparticles represent a promising strategy for improving drug delivery to the eye, but they can be difficult to track in biological systems. To optimize the formulations, it is crucial to understand the biodistri

Animal welfare and the refinement of neuroscience research methods--a case study of Huntington's disease models.

The use of animals in biomedical and other research presents an ethical dilemma: we do not want to lose scientific benefits, nor do we want to cause laboratory animals to suffer. Scientists often refer to the potential human benefits of animal models to justify their use. However, even if this is accepted, it still needs to be argued that the same benefits could not have been achieved with a mitigated impact on animal welfare. Reducing the adverse effects of scientific protocols ('refinement') is therefore crucial in animal-based research. It is especially important that researchers share know

Primary pulmonary artery leiomyosarcoma in an adult dog.

A 7-year-old neutered female English Setter presented with syncope, anemia, and weight loss. Clinical examination revealed a systolic murmur and echocardiography demonstrated a mass on the pulmonic valve. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of a pulmonic valve mass that extended along the pulmonary trunk and into the left pulmonary artery. Multiple pale nodules were observed in the right lung. Microscopic examinations of the pulmonary artery mass and the lung nodules revealed a pleomorphic population of spindle cells often arranged in broad bands containing strap-like nuclei and eosi

Pneumonyssoides caninum, the canine nasal mite, reported for the first time in a fox (Vulpes vulpes).

This is the first report describing the finding of the canine nasal mite, Pneumonyssoides caninum, in a silver fox (Vulpes vulpes). It is also the first time P. caninum has been found in a species other than the dog (Canis familiaris). A severely debilitated 10-month-old, male silver fox was euthanised due to suspected renal failure. During autopsy, a female mite matching the description of P. caninum was found in the nasal cavity of the fox. The finding of P. caninum in the fox suggests the existence of a new host, or at the very least a transient host. The fox's role in maintaining and/or pr

Subcutaneous Furosemide Therapy for Chronic Management of Refractory Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs and Cats.

Reduced efficacy of oral diuretics in the treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF) can be secondary to reduced enteral drug absorption. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of subcutaneous (SC) furosemide administration to control the signs of refractory CHF in dogs and cats and to assess the feasibility of this route of administration. The clinical records of 13 dogs and 17 cats with a history of refractory CHF treated with subcutaneous (SC) furosemide were reviewed retrospectively. Administration of SC furosemide was offered as an alternative therapy when animals experience
