Polyphenols as Natural Therapeutics for Dental Infections and Oral Inflammation: Mechanisms and Clinical Perspectives.

Oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontitis, denture-related stomatitis, and oral mucositis are prevalent global health concerns primarily driven by microbial dysbiosis and chronic inflammation. Conventional treatments, including antibiotics and mechanical plaque control, have limitations due to antimicrobial resistance and adverse effects. Polyphenols, a diverse class of bioactive phytochemicals, exhibit promising antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that can be leveraged for oral health management. This review explores the therapeutic potential of polyphenols i

Smart peptide-based materials and their clinical application for caries management.

BACKGROUND: Caries remains the most prevalent biofilm-mediated disease, requiring a shift toward minimally invasive, biologically driven management. Conventional therapies lack specificity and may disrupt microbial balance. Smart peptide-based materials provide a precision-guided strategy enabling the simultaneous targeting of cariogenic pathogens and promotion of biomimetic remineralization. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors examined the literature regarding the design principles, mechanisms of action, and translational potential of smart peptide-based anticaries systems, including anti

Resin infiltration and oral health-related quality of life in children and adolescents: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Oral health plays a critical role in children's physical, emotional, and social development, yet traditional clinical indices do not adequately capture the broader impact of oral conditions on daily functioning and well-being. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) has therefore emerged as a key patient-centered outcome in pediatric dentistry. METHODS: This narrative review aimed to summarize the conceptual foundations and measurement tools of OHRQoL in children and adolescents and to explore its relevance in minimally invasive caries management, with a particular focus on r

Admission test and academic outcomes in Italian dental education: a retrospective evaluation at the University of Turin.

BACKGROUND: Admission to dental programs in Italy has traditionally been regulated by a national entrance examination. However, a recent reform replaced this system with a merit-based assessment during a "filter semester." This study aimed to evaluate whether admission test scores predict academic success in the Dentistry programme at the University of Turin and to compare outcomes between students admitted through the standard process and those admitted via legal appeals. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 431 students enrolled between 2009 and 2018. In this context, CFUs

New light on the transmissibility of viral hepatitis in dental practice and its control.

Evidence of an increase in the nonparenteral spread of viral hepatitis is of much concern in dentistry and supports the need for sterilization of all instruments used in intraoral treatments. Methods for the rapid sterilization of all dental handpieces and air-water syringes are still inadequate for routine clinical use. It may be possible to improve surface disinfection of these items by more thorough, repeated cleansing with common disinfectants and by the use of stronger germicidal agents such as aldehydes. However, for handpieces and some other equipment, effective sterilization methods mu
