PURPOSE: Corneal transplantation is the most common form of transplantation with approximately 2500 grafts undertaken annually in the United Kingdom. The modern day success of transplantation is attributed to eye bank storage techniques, ocular pharmacology, and improved surgical techniques.
METHODS: This retrospective case note review identified 203 penetrating keratoplasties (PKs) performed during a period from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2003 at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Preoperative risk factors, surgical technique, postoperative complications, and Snellen acuity were analysed.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, human tissue for corneal and amniotic transplantation is supplied by 27 cornea banks.
METHODS: The Section for Tissue Transplantation and Biotechnology of the German Ophthalmological Society records the cornea banks' activities by means of an annual questionnaire.
RESULTS: In 2009, a total of 4,818 corneal grafts were processed by 21 responding cornea banks, and 57% were deemed suitable for transplantation. This ratio is slightly higher than the European average. In addition, German cornea banks released 1,257 amniotic grafts in 2009.

Corneal transplantation is a sight restoring surgery done for corneal blindness. The purpose of this retrospective preliminary study is to analyze the outcome of 54 corneal transplantations (for 32 females and 22 males) done in the Department of Ophthalmology between September 1998 and June 2002. In a recent outbreak of human ocular injuries that occurred in the town of Araguatins, at the right bank of Araguaia river, state of Tocantins, Brazil, along the low water period of 2005, two patients (8 and 12-year-old boys) presented inferior adherent leukoma in the left eye (OS), and peripherical uveites, with snowbanking in the inferior pars plana. The third one (13-year-old girl) showed posterior uveites in OS, also with snowbanking. PURPOSE: Assessing the efficacy of treatment modalities for diabetic retinopathy (DR) from the patient's perspective is restricted due to a lack of a comprehensive patient-reported outcome measure. We are developing a DR-specific quality of life (QoL) item bank, and we report here on the qualitative results from the first phase of this project.
