In recent years, infectious agents have been increasingly recognised as an important pathogenetic factor for various malignant tumours of the ocular adnexa. Many of these viruses and bacteria affect the cell cycle and physiological apoptosis. Ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL), especially extranodal marginal cell lymphoma, is associated with Chlamydophila psittaci and Helicobacter pylori in certain geographic regions. Epstein-Barr virus seems to play a role in the natural killer/T-cell lymphoma subtype of the orbit, as has long been described for Burkitt lymphoma. Bacteria seem to induce reactive l

Ocular infections can be medical emergencies that result in permanent visual impairment or blindness and loss of quality of life. Bacteria are a major cause of ocular infections. Effective treatment of ocular infections requires knowledge of which bacteria are the likely cause of the infection. This survey of ocular bacterial isolates and review of ocular pathogens is based on a survey of a collection of isolates banked over a ten-year span at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma. These findings illustrate the diversity of bacteria isolated from the eye, ranging from common species to rare

A 45-year-old woman presented with sudden complete vision loss in her left eye and retroorbital pain worsened by eye movements. A previous milder episode of vision loss had occurred in the same eye 1 year before, with complete recovery after high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone. She had no light perception in the left eye with a swollen optic disc, but with a normal right optic disc. There were no systemic manifestations or infections. MR scan of the brain showed extensive enlargement and enhancement of the left optic nerve and optic chiasm. After excluding infections and autoimmune marker

From July 2021 through June 2024, we necropsied 35 American alligators from Louisiana, Alabama, and South Carolina (including the Gulf of America and Atlantic Ocean river basins). A new polystomatid, Latergater dupreezi n. gen., n. sp. is described based on specimens collected from the eye of 1 wild-caught American alligator measuring 1,450 mm in total length and captured from a salt marsh habitat within the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge (Grand Chenier, Louisiana) on 19 July 2021. The new species resembles species of Polystomoidinae Yamaguti, 1963 and Oculotrematinae Yamaguti, 1963. It is readil

The effects of Oxyspirura petrowi infections in northern bobwhites ( Colinus virginianus ) are not well understood. While studies have reported O. petrowi infections, none has histopathologically examined the eye surface and intraorbital glands to assess cellular-level impacts associated with infection. This study is the first to document the histopathology associated with O. petrowi infections. Oxyspirura petrowi occurred on the eye surface as well as in the conjunctiva, lacrimal ducts, lacrimal glands, and Harderian glands. Histopathology showed infections of O. petrowi caused cellular damag

Infection is commonly encountered in everyday ophthalmic practice. It is of great importance that all ophthalmic personnel are familiar with the basic etiologies of these infections, and the basic techniques which are used in diagnosis. When evaluating a patient with possible infection, it is often of great help to be familiar with the normal microbial flora of the human body. This normal flora has been detailed in the article. The assumption is that knowledge of a patient's flora can help guide decisions about the possible etiologies of an infection. When presented with an obvious ocular infe

Microbial keratitis is a major cause of monocular blindness worldwide. Trauma and contact lens wear are major risk factors. Bacteria are a major cause, but fungi, viruses, and Acanthamoeba can also cause the disease. Therapeutic options are dwindling with the rise of antimicrobial resistance in all of these microbes, but especially bacteria. Infection with resistant strains results in worse clinical outcomes. New antimicrobial therapies are being developed but most have yet to be either used to treat ocular infections or become commercially available. For bacterial keratitis, antimicrobial pep

The ocular surface is a structure exposed to multiple stresses that can directly or indirectly lead to infectious contamination and compromise visual function. This significant risk justifies multidisciplinary care, often in an emergency context, bringing together ophthalmologists and microbiologists to optimize and guide microbiological testing on small volume samples and ensure the most appropriate treatment. Herein, we present the various steps leading to microbiological diagnosis, from pre-analytical requirements, sampling methods, transport conditions, and then to the analytical steps of

Half a century ago, bacterial diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis were thought to cause the majority of cases of uveitis. Nowadays, a number of infectious diseases are responsible for uveitis. In our countries, herpes virus and toxoplasmosis are the principal causes of uveitis. Furthermore, because specific antimicrobial therapy can be curative and prevent long-term visual sequel, early diagnosis of infectious causes of uveitis should be a priority for all practitioners.

External ocular disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can often be overlooked by the eye care practitioner. Different types of external ocular disease can be an indication of the patient's overall immune status as well as the stage of HIV infection. The external ocular sequelae of HIV infection can be of visual consequence for the patient. Eye care practitioners need to become familiar with these conditions. The diagnosis and management of the following ocular conditions associated with HIV infection are reviewed: conjunctival microvascular disease, dry eye, alle

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Antenatal Zika virus (ZIKV) or toxoplasmosis infections may present with isolated eye abnormalities with absence of other apparent birth defects. The purpose of this article is to discuss the overlapping spectrum of clinical presentation and retinochoroidal scarring in congenital ZIKV and toxoplasmosis infections.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Prenatal ultrasound abnormalities seen from antenatal ZIKV and toxoplasmosis infections overlap and may include intracranial calcifications, microcephaly, and intrauterine growth restriction. The clinical spectrum of both infections in

Type 2 (genital) herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) was isolated from three patients (two adults and an 11-year-old girl) with acute ocular infections. Two of these patients had acute blepharoconjunctivitis and one had acute keratoconjunctivitis. Genital herpes infections had preceded the eye infections in the two adults. This was not the case in the 11-year-old, but she had been in close contact with her sister who had apparently had the genital disease. The study strongly suggests transmission of HSV-2 from the genital site to the eye.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic infections cause significant morbidity in Cambodian children but aetiologic data are scarce. We investigated the causes of acute eye infections in 54 children presenting to the ophthalmology clinic at Angkor Hospital for Children, Siem Reap between March and October 2012.
FINDINGS: The median age at presentation was 3.6 years (range 6 days - 16.0 years). Forty two patients (77.8%) were classified as having an external eye infection, ten (18.5%) as ophthalmia neonatorum, and two (3.7%) as intra-ocular infection. Organisms were identified in all ophthalmia neonatorum pati

Recent outbreaks of Ebola and Zika have highlighted the possibility that viruses may cause enduring infections in tissues like the eye, including the neural retina, which have been considered immune privileged. Whether this is a peculiarity of exotic viruses remains unclear, since the impact of more common viral infections on neural compartments has not been examined, especially in immunocompetent hosts. Cytomegalovirus is a common, universally distributed pathogen, generally innocuous in healthy individuals. Whether in immunocompetent hosts cytomegalovirus can access the eye, and reside there

Low levels of tear lysozyme were observed in patients with infective corneal ulcers, when compared with controls. Lowest levels were seen in patients with bacterial corneal ulcers. The levels of tear lysozyme showed a corresponding decrease with the increase in Schirmer test values; meaning thereby, that in ocular conditions associated with increased rate of tear flow, the lysozyme content in tears tends to be low.
