BACKGROUND: Syphilitic alopecia (SA) is mainly described in single case reports, and there are only a few epidemiological studies.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical and dermoscopic features of SA in patients with secondary syphilis and to record its actual prevalence.
METHODS: All patients with a diagnosis of secondary syphilis were clinically and trichoscopically evaluated in search of hair and scalp alterations.
RESULTS: Five of 12 patients (41.6%) diagnosed with secondary syphilis had SA. The 'moth-eaten' pattern was detected in 4 patients (80% of cases): 1 had 'essential' SA, where

Prescribing habits in South Asian countries have been subjected to some scrutiny.1-6 Most studies conclude that the quality of prescribing is poor, with overuse of antimicrobials and irrational use of fixed-dose combination therapy, particularly in the private sector.1 Prescriptions for multiple drugs are the rule rather than the exception, with up to seven items being prescribed for a single disease entity. Analgesics, anti-inflammatories and drugs of uncertain pharmacologic efficacy, such as vitamins, minerals and glucose water, are also frequently prescribed.

PURPOSE: Adult-onset facial atopic dermatitis (AFAD) is a distinct subtype of atopic dermatitis that predominantly affects the face and is frequently misdiagnosed as rosacea or other facial dermatoses. The management of AFAD is challenging, particularly in patients who respond poorly to conventional therapies. At present, reports on the use of anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE) therapy in AFAD are limited. Herein, we report a case of AFAD with markedly elevated serum IgE levels that showed a favorable response to omalizumab.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinica…

BACKGROUND: Menopause is a universal physiological transition, marked by a decline in estrogen, which has important effects on skin and mucosal health. The impact of menopause and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) on chronic dermatoses remains incompletely defined.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the relationship between menopause, MHT, and common dermatological conditions.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from inception to September 2024 in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligible studies e

BACKGROUND: Extra-facial melasma is a prevalent dermatosis in some populations with special characteristics in relation to its clinical aspects and probable etiopathogenic factors. Few studies have attempted to address this alteration of pigmentation, which has become a challenge in clinical Dermatology.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of extra-facial melasma, comparing affected, and unaffected sites.
METHODS: Case-control study with 45 patients in each group (melasma and disease-free volunteers), assessing their clinical characteri

In conclusion, there can be no doubt that CP is a remarkable local steroid with potency greater than anything previously available to the dermatologist. It may be useful for short-term (less than 2 weeks) and intermittent treatment of widespread inflammatory dermatoses. It is excellent for treating some stubborn localized inflammatory dermatoses before moving on to more dilute preparations. When prescribing CP, it is important to warn the patient of common side effects, such as atrophy and striae, and to instruct the patient carefully in its use, mentioning body areas that should be spared its

We present a patient who developed pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) twice, initially after a minor trauma and later after reconstructive surgery. This case is presented to address the frequent misdiagnosis and mistreatment of PG by surgeons. It is of great importance that PG is diagnosed and of even great importance that surgery is avoided in order to prevent pathergy. Our case adds to the understanding that the diagnosis is based on the clinical and histopathological findings and by excluding other causes of skin ulcers. When a wound is not healing despite relevant local wound management and systemi

BACKGROUND: Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is an acquired hypermelanosis induced by various causes including inflammatory dermatoses, injury, or cosmetic procedures, such as lasers or chemical peels, and it tends to affect dark-skinned people with greater frequency and severity. There are a variety of treatment options for PIH, including topical agents, chemical peels, laser, and light therapy. However, the results are not up to expectation.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical efficacy and safety of novel pulse-in-pulse mode intense pulsed light (IPL) fo

Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy (AHEI) is an unusual form of leukocytoclastic vasculitis with dramatic distinguishing skin lesions that occurs in infants ages 4 to 24 months old. The disease presents with skin eruptions that usually start with large (1-5 cm), symmetrically distributed, hemorrhagic lesions in a characteristic cockade pattern. The lesions are typically located on the lower extremities, face (in particular the ears, cheeks, and eyelids), and gluteal area. Fever may accompany skin eruptions. Clinical presentation at onset requires clinical and laboratory examination to distingu
