Impaired sensitivity to spatial configurations in healthy aging.

Healthy aging is associated with decline in social, emotion, and identity perception, which is frequently attributed to deterioration of structures involved in social inference. It is believed that this decline is unlikely to be a result of perceptual aberrations due to intact (corrected) visual acuity. Nevertheless, the present studies examine whether more particular perceptual aberrations may be present in healthy aging, that could in principle contribute to such difficulties. The present study examined the possibility that particular deficits in configural processing impair the perception o

Face processing predicts reading ability: Evidence from prosopagnosia.

There is considerable interest in whether face and word processing are reliant upon shared or dissociable processes. Developmental prosopagnosia is associated with lifelong face processing deficits, with these cases providing strong support for a dissociation between face and word recognition in three recent papers (Burns et al., 2017; Rubino et al., 2016; Starrfelt et al., 2018). However, the sample sizes in each of these studies may have been too small to detect significant effects. We therefore combined their data to increase power and reassessed their results. While only a non-significant

Me, us, and others: exploring the role of familiarity and emotional expressions in face visual awareness.

Faces play a pivotal role in human interaction, and the rapid processing of face identity and emotional expressions is essential for effective social behaviour. Here, we investigated whether and how face identity and emotional expressions jointly affect face visual awareness. We manipulated three levels of identity (Self, Friend, Stranger) and emotional expressions (Happy, Neutral, Angry) in a Binocular Rivalry (BR) paradigm. Results show that Neutral faces dominated longer visual perception as a function of familiarity (i.e. progressing from Stranger to Friend to Self). Happy emotion led to p

Can the visual system explicitly represent distributions of emotional expressions?

The visual system can quickly extract statistical properties of multiple objects (ensembles). Observers can explicitly access and report the distribution of low-level features, such as color. Here, we investigate whether explicit access extends to the distributions of high-level features (e.g., emotional expressions of a group of faces). In Experiment 1, we presented observers with ensembles that had a Gaussian, uniform, or bimodal distribution of emotional expressions (or colors as a low-level baseline condition). The task was to report the frequency of a randomly chosen feature value. Observ

Deficits in emotion recognition and processing in children with high callous-unemotional traits: the role of the MAOA gene.

Children with high Callous-Unemotional (CU) traits show deficits in recognizing and processing facial expressions. Alterations in emotion recognition have been linked to a higher synaptic concentration of monoaminergic neurotransmitters. The current study investigated the relationship between the MAOA-Low-activity alleles and the ability to recognize and process facial expressions in 97 male children (8-12 years old) diagnosed with disruptive behavior disorder. Participants completed a computerized emotion-recognition task while an eye-tracking system recorded the number (Fixation Count, FC) a

Behavioral characterization of dynamic facial expression perception in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) using naturalistic and synthetic stimuli.

Facial displays are an important channel of communication for primates, yet it remains unclear based on which criteria monkeys evaluate facial expressions. We trained two rhesus macaques to categorize videos of four facial expression types (neutral, lip-smacking, silent bared-teeth (SBT) and open-mouth threat displays) and then tested generalization to novel individuals and avatars while measuring pupillary responses. The animals were able to categorize facial expressions and generalized their classifications to novel, untrained videos, although performance was not perfect. Misclassifications

What does the facial dot-probe task tell us about attentional processes in social anxiety? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Current models of SAD assume that attentional processes play a pivotal role in the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety is supposedly associated with an attentional bias towards disorder related stimuli such as threatening faces. Using the facial dot probe task in socially anxious individuals has, however, revealed inconsistent findings. METHODS: The current systematic review aims at disentangling the heterogeneous findings using effect sizes across results by systematically taking into account potential moderating variables (stimulus type

Degenerate pathway for processing smile and other emotional expressions in congenital facial palsy: an hdEEG investigation.

Influential theoretical models argue that an internal simulation mechanism (motor or sensorimotor simulation) supports the recognition of facial expressions. However, despite numerous converging sources of evidence, recent studies testing patients with congenital facial palsy (i.e. Moebius syndrome) seem to refute these theoretical models. However, these results do not consider the principles of neuroplasticity and degeneracy that could support the involvement of an alternative neural processing pathway in these patients. In the present study, we tested healthy participants and participants wi

Reduced left visual field bias for faces in adolescents with social anxiety disorder.

Introduction: Individuals tend to explore the left side of a face first and for a longer time in comparison to the right side. This left visual field (LVF) bias is suggested to reflect right hemispheric dominance for face processing. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with maladaptive interpretations of facial expressions, but it is not known whether this is linked to an atypical LVF bias. Previous studies have reported a reduced LVF bias in autism, a condition overlapping with SAD. This pre-registered study examined the LVF bias in adolescents with SAD. Methods: Eye-tracking was used

Decoding face identity: A reverse-correlation approach using deep learning.

Face recognition is crucial for social interactions. Traditional approaches primarily rely on subjective judgment, utilizing a pre-selected set of facial features based on literature or intuition to identify critical facial features for face recognition. In this study, we adopted a reverse-correlation approach, aligning responses of a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) with its internal representations to objectively identify facial features pivotal for face recognition. Specifically, we trained a DCNN, namely VGG-FD, to possess human-like capability in discriminating facial identities.

Inability to move one's face dampens facial expression perception.

Humans rely heavily on facial expressions for social communication to convey their thoughts and emotions and to understand them in others. One prominent but controversial view is that humans learn to recognize the significance of facial expressions by mimicking the expressions of others. This view predicts that an inability to make facial expressions (e.g., facial paralysis) would result in reduced perceptual sensitivity to others' facial expressions. To test this hypothesis, we developed a diverse battery of sensitive emotion recognition tasks to characterize expression perception in individu

The Face Processing Deficit in Developmental Dyslexia: A Meta-Analysis.

Many studies have investigated face processing abilities in developmental dyslexia (DD) while conflicting evidence of both impaired and intact face processing has been reported. A systematic meta-analysis was conducted on the topic of the face processing abilities of DD. A total of 15 studies (34 effect sizes) were identified, representing data from 311 individuals with DD and 336 typically developing controls. A random-effects robust variance estimation model was used to synthesise the data. The average weighted standardised mean difference (Hedges' g) was 0.51 (95% confidence interval [0.24,

The asynchronous influence of facial expressions on bodily expressions.

The ability to extract correct emotional information from facial and bodily expressions is fundamental for the development of social skills. Previous studies have shown that bodily expressions affect the recognition of basic facial expressions dramatically. However, few studies have considered the view that facial expressions may influence the recognition of bodily expressions. Further, previous studies have failed to consider a comprehensive set of emotional categories. The present study sought to examine whether facial expressions would impact the recognition of bodily expressions asynchrono

A neural marker of the human face identity familiarity effect.

Human adults associate different views of an identity much better for familiar than for unfamiliar faces. However, a robust and consistent neural index of this behavioral face identity familiarity effect (FIFE)-not found in non-human primate species-is lacking. Here we provide such a neural FIFE index, measured implicitly and with one fixation per face. Fourteen participants viewed 70 s stimulation sequences of a large set (n = 40) of widely variable natural images of a face identity at a rate of 6 images/second (6 Hz). Different face identities appeared every 5th image (1.2 Hz). No other race effect (ORE) for infant face recognition: A memory task.

The aim of this study was to investigate how the other-race and baby schema effects interacted during face perception and recognition processes. 384 pictures representing Caucasian and non-Caucasian faces of infants and adults were shown to 24 Caucasian adult participants in an old/new recognition task. EEG/ERPs were recorded during face encoding and a successive memory session. ERP data showed a baby schema effect on N170, anterior N2 and P300 responses, which were larger to infant than adult faces, regardless of ethnicity. Conversely, an ORE was found, but only for adults faces, with N170 an

The Final-Syllable Advantage in Cross-Modal Mapping Between Name Pronunciation and Face Shape.

Previous studies show that people believe that a name belongs to a person if the person's face shape (FS) matches the lip shape formed when pronouncing the name. This represents a cross-modal mapping effect between name pronunciation (NP) and FS. Considering that approximately 84.55% of Chinese people have a two-character name, the present study specifically investigates which character of double-character Chinese names plays a more critical role in the mapping relationship with the FS. We conducted four experiments that used disyllabic names with pronunciations involving contrasting lip shape

Relationship between face recognition ability and anxiety tendencies in healthy young individuals: A prosopagnosia index and state-trait anxiety inventory study.

Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a condition that indicates the inability to recognize individuals by their faces from birth, without any history of brain damage. The assessment of face recognition ability and diagnosis of DP involve the use of face tests such as the Cambridge Face Memory Test (CFMT) and the Cambridge Face Perception Test, along with self-reported measures like the 20-Item Prosopagnosia Index (PI20). Face recognition accuracy is affected by anxiety. However, previous studies on the relationship between face recognition ability and anxiety have not used the PI20 measure. Thi

Rapid and coarse face detection: With a lack of evidence for a nasal-temporal asymmetry.

Humans have structures dedicated to the processing of faces, which include cortical components (e.g., areas in occipital and temporal lobes) and subcortical components (e.g., superior colliculus and amygdala). Although faces are processed more quickly than stimuli from other categories, there is a lack of consensus regarding whether subcortical structures are responsible for rapid face processing. In order to probe this, we exploited the asymmetry in the strength of projections to subcortical structures between the nasal and temporal hemiretina. Participants detected faces from unrecognizable

The role of preSMA and STS in face recognition: A transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study.

Current models propose that facial recognition is mediated by two independent yet interacting anatomo-functional systems: one processing facial features mainly mediated by the Fusiform Face Area and the other involved in the extraction of dynamic information from faces, subserved by Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS). Also, the pre-Supplementary Motor Area (pre-SMA) is implicated in facial expression processing as it is involved in its motor mimicry. However, the literature only shows evidence of the implication of STS and preSMA for facial expression recognition, without relating it to face recog…
