Two boys with four pheochromocytomas each.

Two teenage boys were treated at separate pediatric institutions for four separate pheochromocytomas over the last 15 years. The first operation in each boy was performed between 9 and 11 years of age, after they presented with severe hypertensive encephalopathy. One boy had separate adrenal tumors excised in 1968, and 3 and 11 years later, two more separate new left adrenal pheochromocytomas were again resected. They were not recurrent left adrenal tumors from residual pheochromocytoma-secreting tissue, because no visible tumor tissue was left behind at the completion of each previous operati

The coherence and correlates of intermittent explosive disorder amongst West Papuan refugees displaced to Papua New Guinea.

Questions remain about the nosological status of intermittent explosive disorder (IED) as a universal diagnosis. Cross-cultural studies are needed to establish whether IED symptoms form a coherent pattern and are distinguishable from other related symptom constellations. A study amongst a refugee population also allows further inquiry of the relationship between exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and other adversities with the IED constellation. In the present study amongst West Papuan refugees residing in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, we apply culturally adapted interview modul

Yunis-Varon syndrome with severe osteodysplasty.

We report two male sibs and two female sibs from separate families, both with normal parents, who had a lethal condition with features of the Yunis-Varon syndrome and radiological signs of severe osteodysplasty. Autosomal recessive inheritance is likely in both families. The additional features described represent further delineation of the phenotype of the Yunis-Varon syndrome.

Effects of marital conflict and family structure on the self-concepts of pre- and early adolescents.

This study explored the effects of marital conflict and family structure on the self-concepts of youth aged 8-12. Subjects were 16 mother-youth pairs from intact parent families (IP) and 17 mother-youth pairs from separated parent families (SP). Results revealed youth in families with low marital hostility and high marital affection had significantly more positive self-concepts. Analyses suggested differences between IP and SP groups may best be explained by differences in marital hostility. The authors discuss the effects of marital discord on parenting within an ecosystems perspective.

The Family Unification Program: A Randomized-Controlled Trial of Housing Stability.

The study tests the short-term impact on housing stability of the Family Unification Program (FUP), a permanent housing program for child welfare- involved families at risk of separation from children due to inadequate housing. Families eligible for FUP (n = 150) received housing case management services as usual, and half were referred for permanent housing vouchers made available through FUP. Families referred for FUP secured more enriched home learning environments, while more precariously housed families exhibited greater housing, stability when referred for FUP. The intervention did not r

Experiences of family members when a parent is hospitalized for their mental illness: a qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A considerable proportion of people attending mental health services are parents with dependent children. Parental mental illness can be challenging for all family members including the parent's children and partner. The hospitalization of the parent and subsequent separation from dependent children may be a particularly challenging time for all family members. The aim of this paper was to review qualitative studies of family members' experiences when parents, who have dependent children, were hospitalized for their mental illness. The experiences of parents themselves, their child

Longitudinal Influence of Family Environment on Language Outcomes of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Many child-, hearing-, and device-related factors contribute to spoken language outcomes in children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). Recently, the family environment has been implicated as another contributing factor in language development. However, most studies on the role of families in language outcomes of children who are DHH are cross-sectional in nature and fail to draw directional conclusions. This study investigated the bidirectional relationship between attributes of the family environment and the spoken language outcomes of DHH children by examining data collected o

Migration Factors in West African Immigrant Parents' Perceptions of Their Children's Neighborhood Safety.

Immigrants make up large proportions of many low-income neighborhoods, but have been largely ignored in the neighborhood safety literature. We examined perceived safety's association with migration using a six-item, child-specific measure of parents' perceptions of school-aged (5-12 years of age) children's safety in a sample of 93 West African immigrant parents in New York City. Aims of the study were (a) to identify pre-migration correlates (e.g., trauma in home countries), (b) to identify migration-related correlates (e.g., immigration status, time spent separated from children during migra

[Early risk factors in schizoid, neurotic and healthy probands].

The following results were obtained on comparing the genesis of schizoid, neurotic and healthy subjects: 1. The schizoid patients examined by us had experienced a greater total risk-associated stress during childhood and adolescence than the comparative groups. 2. Special risk-associated stress is due to: a) a stress-burdened family atmosphere (laden with conflicts within the family and burdened with diseases), b) stress originating from the mother (risks of old age and diseases), c) stress originating from siblings (large number of siblings, smaller age intervals, etc.), d) stress originating

Family-related adversity and positive youth development: the role of psychological distress, hopelessness and hostility.

BACKGROUND: The family is a very important institution that provides relationships and contexts for adolescents and can activate a trajectory of their positive development. Family-related adversity can endanger this development via associated negative emotions, such as feelings of hopelessness, hostility, and psychological distress. Therefore, we aimed first to explore the association of family-related adversity with positive youth development (PYD), and second whether psychological distress, hopelessness, and hostility mediate this association. METHODS: We obtained self-reported data from 308

Mental health profiles among married, never-married, and separated/divorced mothers in a nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have found that married mothers compared to single mothers had better mental health (Cairney et al. in Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol 38:442-449, 2003; Cairney et al. in Can J Public Health 90:320-324, 1999; Davies et al. in J Marriage Fam 59:294-308, 1997; Lipman et al. in Am J Psychiatry 158:73-77, 2001; Wang in Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol 39:26-32, 2004). Although a relationship between family structure (single vs married mothers) and psychiatric disorders is well established, several questions remain. The present study addressed the question "Are ther

Is a familial definition of depression both feasible and valid?

On the basis of familial constellations it is possible to separate out most of the unipolar depressive patients that are seen in the hospital. The groups may be called depression spectrum disease, pure depressive disease, and sporadic depressive disease. The sporadic depressive disease group is older at onset and older at index of admission than the other two groups. The depression spectrum disease and pure depressive disease groups are separated by virtue of the fact that there are more episodes of illness in the latter.

An Overview of Pterin Analysis in Biological Samples: From Occurrence and Properties to Sample Pretreatment Combined With Hyphenated Separation Techniques.

Pterins are a structurally diverse group of biologically active compounds within the pteridine family, with key roles in pigmentation, redox metabolism, light sensing, and cellular signaling across a wide range of organisms. Their quantification in biological samples is analytically demanding due to their high polarity, chemical instability, and the presence of multiple oxidation states. This review presents an integrated overview of pterin occurrence, structure, and physicochemical properties, followed by a detailed discussion of sample preparation strategies designed to ensure compound stabi

Lytic transglycosylase repertoire diversity enables intrinsic antibiotic resistance and daughter cell separation in Escherichia coli under acidic stress.

Peptidoglycan (PG) is an important architectural element that imparts physical toughness and rigidity to the bacterial envelope. It is also a dynamic structure that undergoes continuous turnover or autolysis. Escherichia coli possesses redundant PG degradation enzymes responsible for PG turnover; however, the advantage afforded by the existence of numerous PG degradation enzymes remains incompletely understood. In this study, we elucidated the physiological roles of MltE and MltC, members of the lytic transglycosylase (LTG) family that catalyze the cleavage of glycosidic bonds between disaccha

Antagonistic Activity of Antimicrobial Metabolites Produced from Seaweed-Associated Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 10456 Against Malassezia spp.

Members of the genus Malassezia are known to be opportunistic pathogens responsible for causing skin disorders such as seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff, pityriasis versicolor, folliculitis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Due to the side effects caused by prolonged use of current topical antifungal agents, development of an alternative treatment is necessary. Fermentative production of antimicrobial metabolites from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 10456 was carried out, and their antagonistic activity against Malassezia furfur and Malassezia globosa was evaluated. The antifungal metabolites

Predictors of treatment outcome in an effectiveness trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for children with anxiety disorders.

A substantial number of children with anxiety disorders do not improve following cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Recent effectiveness studies have found poorer outcome for CBT programs than what is typically found in efficacy studies. The present study examined predictors of treatment outcome among 181 children (aged 8-15 years), with separation anxiety, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder, who participated in a randomized, controlled effectiveness trial of a 10-session CBT program in community clinics. Potential predictors included baseline demographic, child, and parent factor
