A new case of eosinophilic fasciitis.

A new case of Shulman's disease is reported. The patient shows skin induration in both arms and legs, and morphea plaques without visceral involvement. Onset of the disease followed an unusual physical effort. An important blood eosinophilia and a mild hypergammaglobulinemia are present. The histopathological studies show a typical eosinophilic fasciitis. The use of steroids had no effect in the treatment of the disease.

Plantar Fasciitis With a Calcaneal Spur.

This study presents the case of a 47-year-old male with right foot plantar fasciitis and a calcaneal spur. Chronic heel pain can be caused by several medical conditions, including plantar fasciitis and a calcaneal spur, which often may be overlooked on initial evaluation. The risk factors, clinical presentation, imaging findings, and emergency department management of plantar fasciitis with a calcaneal spur are reported and discussed.

Dupilumab for treatment of eosinophilic fasciitis.

This is the first report, to our knowledge, of the use of dupilumab in treating eosinophilic fasciitis (EF). Our case supports that Type 2 innate immunity might be related to EF and that T helper 2 cytokines play important roles in EF.

A rarer association of eosinophilic fasciitis.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF, also called Shulman syndrome) is a rare connective tissue disorder with poorly understood pathogenesis and unknown etiology. EF is characterized initially by limb or trunk erythema and edema and later by collagenous thickening of the subcutaneous fascia. Here, we present the case of a 16-year-old boy who presented with typical clinical features of EF with a history of typical trigger factor - preceding strenuous physical activity and had a rarer atypical association of hypercalcemia and raised angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) levels.

Myositis and Fasciitis: Role of Imaging.

Imaging plays an important role in the evaluation of patients presenting with possible myositis, with magnetic resonance imaging the most appropriate modality but ultrasound also playing a complementary role. This article reviews the imaging appearance of the inflammatory myopathies, other forms of myositis, and mimickers of myositis, with a discussion of distinguishing features for each entity. The fascia and disease processes that preferentially involve the fascia are also reviewed.

Periocular necrotizing fasciitis in an infant.

Periocular necrotizing fasciitis developed in a 12-month-old boy with swelling of both eyes and redness and a discharge from the left eye approximately 36 hours after blunt trauma. Computed tomography revealed preseptal and soft-tissue edema on the left side, but no signs of orbital involvement, orbital fractures, or drainable abscess in the anterior left lower eyelid. The inflammatory signs worsened over the next day, and there was purulent discharge from the left lower eyelid and an abscess and necrosis of the lower eyelid skin. He did well following surgical debridement and treatment with i…

Diagnosis and classification of eosinophilic fasciitis.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare scleroderma-like syndrome with an unknown etiology and pathogenesis that should be considered an immune-allergic disorder. Painful swelling with progressive induration and thickening of the skin and soft tissues of the limbs and trunk are the clinical hallmarks of the disease. Peripheral blood eosinophilia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate are the main laboratory findings. Full-thickness wedge biopsy of the clinically affected skin showing inflammation and thickening of deep fascia is essential to establish the diagnosis.…

Association of eosinophilic fasciitis with morphea.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, described for the first time by Shulman in 1974. The disease presents with induration of the skin, connective tissue and the underlying muscle fascia, sometimes accompanied by myalgia, most commonly in the lower extremities. Unlike scleroderma, it presents with absence of visceral organ involvement and Raynaud's phenomenon. Hypergammaglobulinemia and eosinophilia have been reported. Eosinophilic fasciitis is often associated with hematological disorders--there are reports of combinations with other autoimmune diseases s…

Necrotizing fasciitis of the lower limbs.

We report an uncommon severe soft-tissue infection of the thighs in a male child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Early and aggressive medical treatment and the conservative surgical approach were successful. Necrotizing fasciitis should be suspected in any soft-tissue infection until it can be definitely ruled out, since prompt deliver of medical and surgical intervention is essential.

Diagnosis and management of necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening soft tissue infection which is rapidly fatal unless diagnosed promptly and treated with immediate debridement of necrotic tissue. As early clinical suspicion is paramount to improved survival, this review aims to increase awareness of the condition.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck is a rapidly progressing and life-threatening condition. The purpose of this study was to describe the patients with a focus on clinical presentation, microbiology, treatment, and prognosis. PATIENTS AND RESULTS: Seventeen patients (10 men; median age, 54 years) were included. Nine patients underwent minor head and neck surgery immediately prior to necrotizing fasciitis. The typical course was a quickly spreading erythema, pronounced tenderness, and severe pain. Imaging demonstrated diffuse swelling of the soft tissue, poorly differentiat…

Neonatal nodular fasciitis of the larynx.

We want to describe a case of neonatal laryngeal nodular fasciitis. A 5-day-old female presented with stridor. Fiberoptic transnasal laryngoscopy identified a smooth ball-valving mass obstructing the glottis. Direct microlaryngoscopy demonstrated a lesion originating from the right laryngeal ventricle. Endoscopic therapeutic and diagnostic subtotal biopsies relieved the airway obstruction. Pathologic analysis established nodular fasciitis as the diagnosis. Follow-up endoscopy showed complete resolution of this reactive lesion, and normal laryngeal function. Nodular fasciitis, rarely described …

Necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an uncommon infection caused by microorganisms called 'flesh eating bacteria'. It remains a life-threatening condition associated with high mortality rate. Its location to the chest wall is exceptional. Herein, we report the case of a 39-year-old female, without comorbidity, presenting a NF of the chest wall complicating an empyema. We describe the surgical management with a three-step procedure: antibiotherapy-debridement, vacuum-assisted closure and delayed surgical reconstruction.

Nodular fasciitis in the submandibular gland.

Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a benign, proliferative lesion of myofibroblasts. The most common site of the lesion is in the upper extremities or trunk. NF in the head and neck is next in frequency and is the most common site in infants and children. In adults, NF in the submandibular region is very rare. We report a case of a 53-year-old man with a submandibular mass, rapidly growing for 10 days. Cytologic findings revealed a few sheets or clusters of small, uniform spindle cells. The uniform spindle cells had centrally located round to ovoid nucleus, but there were no nuclear atypia and atypical…
