A 73 year-old immunocompromised male was admitted to the intensive care unit with signs of necrotising fasciitis and septic shock. Prompt surgery was performed. Cultures showed Salmonella Enteritidis. Relevant antibiotics were given in a course of 14 days. A few weeks later the patient had a relapse of fever. Again blood cultures showed S. Enteritidis. This case presents a rare manifestation of extraintestinal infection with S. Enteritidis, and implicates the need for long-term antibiotic therapy to prevent relapse.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a life-threatening rare infection of the soft tissues, is a medical and surgical emergency. It is characterized by subtle, rapid onset of spreading inflammation and necrosis starting from the fascia, muscles, and subcutaneous fat, with subsequent necrosis of the overlying skin. Once suspected, immediate and extensive radical debridement of necrotic tissues is mandatory. Appropriate antibiotics and intensive general support avoid massive systemic diffusion of the infective process and are the key for successful treatment. However, early diagnosis is missed or delayed

A report of a fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis of the leg due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection. This organism frequently causes minor infections in seawater-exposed wounds. In this case the patient died due to fulminant sepsis caused by necrotizing fasciitis, despite surgical debridement. This case serves as a reminder for targeted antibiotic coverage for Vibrio in any serious saltwater-related infection, and as an illustration of the rapid and severe systemic toxicity associated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus necrotizing fasciitis, even in the setting of minor initial skin findings.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a fulminant advancing soft tissue infection characterized by widespread fascial necrosis, which can result in significant morbidity and even death. This condition requires prompt diagnosis and aggressive management with extensive surgical debridement and appropriate antibiotic coverage. Pyoderma gangrenosum, in contrast, is a noninfectious inflammatory condition of the skin that typically does not require surgical management. Both conditions can present with extensive ulceration and tissue necrosis, and close clinical-pathologic correlation is required to make the appr

Necrotizing fasciitis is a hypodermis, muscular fascia then dermis necrotizing infection. It disseminates along fascias with a mortality sometimes within 18 hours. The average mortality, reported in the literature, is about 30%. A 65-year-old man, with a history of Vaquez disease (under hydroxurea) and a smoke addiction, had an epidermoid carcinoma of the left vocal cord (T2 N0 M0). The cancer treatment consisted of a functional lymph node excision, followed by tracheotomy then by partial laryngectomy. At the end of the intervention, after removal of operative fields, it was noticed that the M

Necrotizing fasciitis is an aggressive infection involving fascia and subcutaneous tissue thus causing infectious thrombosis of the nutrient vessels to the overlying skin ultimately leading to extensive necrosis. Although necrotizing fasciitis is common in the perineum, abdominal wall and extremities it is relatively uncommon in the head and neck region. This is a case report of a 65 year old female visiting from India who presented with diabetic ketoacidosis precipitated by cervical necrotizing fasciitis. Computed tomography imaging showed involvement of the left parapharyngeal space and ther

OBJECTIVES: Necrotizing fasciitis is a challenging and potentially lethal disease; early diagnosis is of paramount importance and aggressive multidisciplinary treatment is mandatory. Overall mortality rates of 33-73% have been reported. The aim of this study was to report the experience with necrotizing fasciitis of an emergency surgery department.
METHODS: From October 1995 to December 2001 we observed 11 cases of necrotizing fasciitis. The patients were five men and six women, with ages ranging from 33 to 80 years.
RESULTS: Triggering aetiological factors were found in eight cases. In all

BACKGROUND: Abscesses of the peritonsillar region are among the most common deep abscesses of the head and neck. However, cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) associated with a peritonsillar abscess is an extremely rare condition, with only 12 well-documented cases described.
PATIENTS: We reviewed and compared all 12 cases of CNF arising from peritonsillar abscesses, including our own case. CNF that developed after peritonsillar abscesses was also compared with that developing predominantly after odontogenic infection.
RESULTS: The overall mortality was higher in the group with peritonsillar

PURPOSE: To report a case of progressive necrotizing fasciitis of the face following acute dacryocystitis.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 60-year-old woman presented with left acute dacryocystitis with abscess formation that had ruptured; a small wound remained. Erythematous swelling of the left eyelid and face developed 3 days later. Clinical progression and computed tomographic findings led to the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis with abscess formation. Early intravenous antibiotics and repeated surgical debridements were performed.
RESULTS: Soft tissue necrosis was foun

This paper reports a 14-year-old male patient who developed necrotizing fasciitis of the leg after a minor trauma. He was admitted to our intensive care unit with septic shock and acute lung injury. The clinical course was complicated by bilateral multiple pneumoceles resulting in bilateral pneumothoraces. The causative organism was found to be Staphylococcus aureus. This young patient survived and was discharged home in fair general condition.

Aeromonas Hydrophila is a gram-negative bacillus commonly found in soil, sewage, and fresh or brackish water in many parts of the United States. In healthy people, the most common clinical manifestations attributed to Aeromonas are diarrhea and soft tissue infections. In people with suppressed immune systems or liver disease, A hydrophila can cause meningitis, endocarditis, peritonitis, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, or septicemia. We present the first known case of fulminant necrotizing fasciitis from A hydrophila that is not associated with trauma, liver disease, or immunosuppression.

NF involves rapidly spreading inflammation with necrosis of superficial fascia, fat, and possibly muscle and epidermis. Severe systemic toxicity can be associated with NF and mortality rates can reach 74% with this so called flesh eating disease. Treatment modalities include antibiotics, surgical intervention, and other therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen. Successful treatment of NF can be facilitated with diligent nursing assessment and intervention.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare condition which usually affects the trunk, perineum and limbs. Head and neck involvement is very uncommon and in most cases it is secondary to orbital or dental infection. We report a case of craniofacial necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) secondary to a maxillary sinusitis. The patient was treated intensively with antibiotics, surgical procedures and life-support measures. Despite all efforts, the patient died one week after admission. This case highlights early diagnosis and aggressive management as decisive factors for the outcome of the patient.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressing, synergistic bacterial infection of fascia with a reported average mortality of about 40%. Fournier's disease, necrotizing fasciitis of the genital sphere, is also included in this study. Seven patients were studied over a one-year period between May 1991 and October 1992. Most commonly, they were infected by perineal diseases, medical procedures and cutaneous ulcers. The local clinical signs are cellulitis, oedema, blisters, necrosis and crepitus; general septic symptoms may also be present. Associated chronic diseases were present in 4 patients.

Two patients with rapidly progressive necrotizing fasciitis of a lower extremity due to Staphylococcus aureus as a single pathogen are described. In both patients the portal of entry was attributed to needle puncture (intra-articular injection and intravenous catheter, respectively), followed by bacteremia. Necrotizing fasciitis occurred in a site remote from the needle puncture, suggesting metastatic infection. One patient developed toxic shock syndrome and the other a sunburn-like rash and erythematous mucosae with strawberry tongue. One patient died, and the other required above-knee amputa

We would like to present a novel form of Munchausen's syndrome which presented us with a difficult problem in the midst of the recent media hysteria regarding flesh eating bacteria. This condition, first described by Richard Asher in 1951, is often very difficult to diagnose and it is not, therefore, surprising that the victims have been through several episodes of treatment before the suspicions of staff are raised. It owes its name to a fictitious character, Baron Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freihess von Munchausen, who recounted extraordinary and wildly exaggerated exploits of adventure and d
