Virilization in two pre-pubertal children exposed to topical androgen.

Androgen replacement therapy for male hypogonadism may be prescribed utilizing intramuscular, oral or more recently, topical formulations. With topical formulations, there is a risk of person-to-person transmission if appropriate precautions are not taken. We describe two cases of virilization in pre-pubertal children following passive transfer of paternal topical testosterone. A 21 month old male was referred with a 6 week history of pubic hair, phallic growth, and linear growth spurt. Genital examination revealed Tanner stage 2 pubic hair and Tanner stage 3 phallic development, which was dis

Parent Dyadic Coping and Parent-Child Relationship Quality in Families of Autistic Children.

BACKGROUND: Within two-parent households, the extent to which parents are satisfied in their couple relationship is theorized to influence t … dyadic coping. In addition, mothers' level of couple relationship satisfaction was correlated with father-child relationship quality, and this association was also mediated by positive dyadic coping. CONCLUSION: Our findings can inform programs to strengthen parent-child relationship quality in families with an autistic child.

Cognitive Flexibility and Assertiveness as Predictors of Parent-Child Relationship Quality in Emerging Adulthood.

Emerging adulthood is a transitional life stage in which parent-child relationships remain meaningful for psychological adjustment and well- … e flexibility demonstrated a statistically significant theoretical predictive association only with father-child relationship quality. No significant gender differences were observed across the study variables. Together, cognitive flexibility and assertiveness accounted for a modest proportion of the variance in parent-child relationship quality, suggesting that they re …

The transition to fatherhood beyond early infancy: Hormonal, behavioral and psychological changes.

Previous cross-sectional studies have documented hormonal differences between human fathers and nonfathers. However, the timing and persistence of these changes remain unclear. We previously reported that first-time expecting fathers exhibited lower plasma testosterone (T) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), as well as dynamic changes in oxytocin (OT) across portions of the prenatal and early postpartum period compared with partnered nonfather controls. By four months postpartum, however, these group differences were no longer significant. Here, we extend these findings longitudinally into late in

Childhood risk factors for thin body preoccupation and social pressure to be thin.

OBJECTIVE: Thin body preoccupation and social pressure to be thin (TBPSP) in adolescence are risk factors for the development of full and partial bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. This study examined precursors of these potent risk factors. METHOD: A prospective study followed 134 children from birth to 11.0 years and their parents. Recruitment began in January 1990 and ended in March 1991. The study was completed in December 2002. RESULTS: Two moderators identified different groups at risk for the development of TBPSP. A father with high body dissatisfaction characterized the large

History of childhood abuse in Portuguese parents.

OBJECTIVE: The study examines the self-reported prevalence of childhood physical and sexual abuse in a large sample of Portuguese parents. METHOD: Nearly 1,000 parents (506 mothers and 426 fathers) were selected through public primary schools from the Northern area of Portugal. All completed the Portuguese version of the Childhood History Questionnaire (CHQ) [Journal of Family Violence 5 (1990) 15]. RESULTS: Results show that the prevalence of abuse was 73%, but more severe physical abuse involving sequelae/injury was reported by 9.5%. Most physical abuses began prior to age 13, with half co

[Marriage disruption and health management within the family].

The divorce rate steadily increases in the industrialized countries. Such a demographic trend may possibly have a significant impact on the health of the divorced people and their children and therefore on the health care system. Three divorced women are interviewed on the basis of sociological survey techniques. They live three specific personal situations. The interviews concern mainly four domains: divorce process, sex, food and parent-children relations. The breaking down of the former living arrangements modifies a number of personal behaviors, however, it is clear that the way health in

Mediational links among parenting styles, perceptions of parental confidence, self-esteem, and depression on alcohol-related problems in emerging adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is often found to be comorbid with alcohol-related problems. Parental overprotection, which may be of particular importance during emerging adulthood, has been linked to internalizing symptoms in offspring. This article evaluates the impact of parenting styles and parental confidence in their offspring on an internalizing pathway to alcohol-related problems through self-esteem and depression. METHOD: Mediational links were tested among parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive), parental confidence (overprotection, autonomy), self-esteem, depression, and

Emerging Adult Antisocial Problems and Psychological and Physical Maltreatment: Moderation by Other Parent-Child Relationship Quality.

Current research supports that both psychological/physical maltreatment by parents and parent-child relationship quality strongly correlate with children's psychopathology. Less research has examined the interaction effects among these variables, especially in emerging adults. The current study analyzed the association between psychological/physical maltreatment experienced from one parent and antisocial behaviors displayed by emerging adults, as well as the moderating effect of the other parent's parent-child relationship quality. This sample included 1,364 emerging adults (953 females, 411 m

[Variant analysis on steroid 5-reductase type 2 deficiency caused by a novel SRD5A2 mutation].

This article reported the clinical characteristics and SRD5A2 gene mutation pattern of a child with steroid 5-α reductase type 2 deficiency. The 2-month-old boy showed hypospadias and short penis shortly after birth. DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of the child and his parents. The endocrine disease-related genes were captured and sequenced by high-throughput sequencing technology, and the family DNA samples were verified by Sanger sequencing. The results showed that c.680G>A(p.R227Q) and c.608G>A(p.G203D) compound heterozygous mutations existed in the SRD5A2 gene of the child. The

Caregiving experience and expressed emotion among parents of adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa following illness onset.

The aim of this study was to better understand the relationship between parents' experience of caregiving and expressed emotion during the early stage of their child's eating disorder. Fifty mothers and 38 fathers of adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa and hospitalized for the first time participated in this study. They completed the Experience of Caregiving Inventory, a measure of the negative and positive aspects of the caregiving experience, and the Family Questionnaire, which measured the different dimensions of expressed emotion, namely emotional over-involvement and critical comm

The role of friends, in-laws, and other kin in father-perpetrated child physical abuse.

Thirty-five physically abusive fathers were matched with a comparison sample to test multiple systemic explanations for child physical abuse, using an ecological perspective, and to show the relationship between the structure of social ties and the function of those ties. The physically abusive fathers were found to have received significantly fewer emotional and instrumental supports from their friends, in-laws, and other kin than the comparison fathers, and were only weakly linked to members of their social networks--members who might have discouraged the fathers' aggressive impulses or prov

Discovering misattributed paternity in living kidney donation: prevalence, preference, and practice.

When evaluating a living kidney donor and recipient with a father-child relationship, it may be discovered that the two are not biologically related. We analyzed data from the United Network for Organ Sharing and the Canadian Organ Replacement Registry to determine how frequently this occurs. We surveyed 102 potential donors, recipients, and transplant professionals for their opinion on whether such information should be disclosed to the donor-recipient pair. We communicated with transplant professionals from 13 Canadian centers on current practices for handling this information. In the United…

Does expectant fathers' attachment style or depressive mood relate to their embodied mentalizing capacity of their 12-month-old infant?

Parental embodied mentalizing is about how parents show with their body that they hold in mind their infants' mind. The main study's aim was to explore what influences fathers' embodied mentalizing. A random sample of 200 fathers and their 12-month-old infants were drawn from a large longitudinal, population-based dataset, the "Little in Norway (LiN)" study. Fathers' partner related attachment style was assessed at enrollment, symptoms of depression were measured four times during pregnancy and at 12 months postpartum, as was also parenting stress. Videotaped father-infant interactions were co

Parents' Instrumental Family Support, Diet Quality, and Satisfaction with Food-Related Life: A Dyadic Approach in Dual-Earner Parents and Their Adolescent Children.

Background: Research on family support has primarily focused on emotional aspects, paying less attention to instrumental support and its concurrent association with food-related well-being. Aim: To explore direct and indirect actor and partner effects among parents' instrumental family support, diet quality, and satisfaction with food-related life (SWFoL) in dual-earner families with adolescents. Methods: Online surveys were conducted with 860 dual-earner parent dyads and one adolescent child (mean age 12.7 ± 1.8 years; 49.8% female) in Chile. Family members completed the Adapted Healthy Eatin

Mother- and Father-Child Reminiscing About Past Events Involving Pain, Fear, and Sadness: Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Pain in childhood is prevalent and is associated with fear, particularly in the context of injuries or procedural pain, and negative emotions (e.g., sadness). Pain and fear share a bidirectional relationship, wherein fear exacerbates the experience of pain and pain increases subsequent anticipatory fear. The existing research has focused primarily on children's immediate experience of pain and fear. Research on how children remember or talk about past painful, fearful, or sad events is lacking. Parent-child reminiscing about past pain has been demonstrated to differ from reminiscing

The Impact of Autistic Traits on Joint Attention in Young Children With Down Syndrome During Mother-Child and Father-Child Interactions.

PURPOSE: Joint attention predicts later language in Down syndrome (DS) and autism. The co-occurrence of autism in children with DS is 6%-19%, which is higher than in the general population. However, little is known about how co-occurring autism in DS impacts the development of joint attention. This study compared mother-child and father-child interactions in families of children with DS. Our purpose was to investigate differences in caregiver joint-attention bids and whether caregiver and child joint attention were associated with autistic traits and receptive language in children with DS.
