The Impact of Home Enteral Tube-Feeding on the Intent and Experience of Going Out in Public: A Qualitative Study on Patients' and Caregivers' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Individuals on tube-feeding experience significant lifestyle changes and social isolation, but the barriers and support for travelling out while on tube-feeding to reintegrate into the community have not been studied. This research explores the factors influencing the decisions of individuals on tube-feeding and their carers to travel outside of their homes, their experiences, and perceived barriers and support when performing tube-feeding in public settings. METHODS: A qualitative design using purposive sampling explored the experiences of three individuals and five carers living

Neonatal respiratory inhibition causes repeated severe hypoxemia.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to verify the details of neonatal respiratory inhibition (NRI) in healthy infants. METHODS: We screened for NRI in 521 infants who weighed at least 2000 g and who were born at a gestational age of at least 36 weeks. Respiratory inhibition was defined as severe hypoxemia, accompanied by clinical manifestations of central cyanosis and a decrease in SpO2 to less than 70%. NRI consists of feeding hypoxemia, respiratory inhibition after crying (RIAC), and respiratory inhibition after gastroesophageal reflux (RIGER). The subjects were monitored continuously via

Factors affecting bilirubin levels during first 48 hours of life in healthy infants.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of delivery type, maternal anesthesia, feeding modalities, and first feeding and meconium passage times with early bilirubin levels of healthy infants. METHODS: Cord, 24 hours' and 48 hours' total bilirubin levels were measured in 388 study infants. RESULTS: Infants born with cesarean section were fed later and more often had mixed feeding. First meconium passage was delayed with general anesthesia. Cord, 24 and 48 hours' bilirubin levels were not correlated with first feeding time, meconium passage time, mode of delivery, existence and type of anes

Pressuring and restrictive feeding styles influence infant feeding and size among a low-income African-American sample.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of overweight among infants and toddlers has increased dramatically in the past three decades, highlighting the importance of identifying factors contributing to early excess weight gain, particularly in high-risk groups. Parental feeding styles and the attitudes and behaviors that characterize parental approaches to maintaining or modifying children's eating behavior are an important behavioral component shaping early obesity risk. DESIGN AND METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the Infant Care and Risk of Obesity Study, a cohort study of 217 African-American mothe

Modes of infant feeding and the occurrence of coughing/wheezing in the first year of life.

BACKGROUND: Controversies regarding infant feeding and childhood wheezing may result from insufficient differentiation among various feeding modes. OBJECTIVES: We conducted prospective analyses of associations between the repeated ascertainment of feeding mode and wheezing in infancy. METHODS: The Infant Feeding Practices Study II (2833 infants) provided data on coughing/wheezing episodes (CWEs) at 8 time points and feeding modes at 9 time points from months 1 to 12. Feeding modes were defined as direct breastfeeding, indirect breastfeeding (IBF, bottled breast milk), formula feeding (FF), a

Breast-feeding problems after epidural analgesia for labour: a retrospective cohort study of pain, obstetrical procedures and breast-feeding practices.

Various clinical practices have been found to be associated with breast-feeding problems. However, little is known about the effect of pain, obstetrical procedures and analgesia on breast-feeding behaviour. We designed a retrospective study with a questionnaire concerning pain, obstetrical procedures and breast-feeding practices mailed to 164 primiparae in Lapland. Altogether 99 mothers (60%) returned completed questionnaires that could be included in the analysis, which was carried out in two steps. Firstly, all accepted questionnaires were grouped according to the success or failure to breas

Effect of early skin-to-skin contact after vaginal birth on neonatal stress and day-5 bilirubin levels: a randomized trial.

This study aimed to examine the effects of early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) on neonatal stress as the primary outcome and-together with early initiation of breastfeeding-on fifth-day total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels as a secondary outcome. Mother-newborn dyads were randomly assigned to the control (n = 30) or SSC group (n = 30). Neonatal stress was assessed immediately after birth, under a radiant warmer, and during intramuscular (IM) vitamin K injection using the Newborn Stress Scale (NSS); the SSC group was evaluated five minutes after SSC initiation. TSB levels were measured on the fifth

Results of a Feeding Protocol in Patients Undergoing the Hybrid Procedure.

Neonates with single-ventricle physiology are at increased risk of developing gastrointestinal morbidities. Feeding protocols in this patient population have been shown to decrease feeding complications after the Norwood procedure, but no data exist to determine the effectiveness of a feeding protocol in patients undergoing the hybrid procedure. Goal of this study was to examine the impact of a standardized feeding protocol on the incidence of overall postoperative gastrointestinal morbidity after the hybrid procedure. Retrospective chart review was performed on neonates undergoing the hybrid

A new technique for feeding dogs with a congenital cleft palate for surgical research.

In humans, cleft palate (CP) is one of the most common malformations. Although surgeons use palatoplasty to close CP defects in children, its consequences for subsequent facial growth have prompted investigations into other novel surgical alternatives. The animal models of CP used to evaluate new surgical treatments are frequently obtained by creating surgically induced clefts in adult dogs. This procedure has been ethically criticized due to its severity and questionable value as an animal model for human CP. Dogs born with a congenital CP would be much better for this purpose, provided they

Indirect test weighing: a new method for measuring overnight breast milk intakes in the field.

Indirect test weighing (ITW), a new method for measuring nighttime breast milk intake, is based on separate weighings of the mother and infant at the start and end of the nighttime sleep period. All other incidental weight changes overnight are measured, so that the corrected infant's overnight weight gain and the mother's overnight weight loss are then accounted for by breast milk transfer and evaporative water loss (EWL) alone. The combined EWL is partitioned between mother and infant on the basis of metabolic body size (body weight raised to the power of 0.73). The infant's EWL is added ont

Measurement of milk yield in women.

The measurement of milk yield in any suckling mammal is difficult, and studies on women pose additional restrictions because of the limitations on the nature of the techniques which can be used. The most commonly used method for determining milk yield in women is test weighing. In this method either the infant or the mother is weighed before and after a breast feed, and the difference between the two weights is considered to be the amount of milk produced. The reliability of the results obtained by the test weighing procedure depends on both the interval over which milk yield is recorded and t

Oxytocin Amplifies Negative Response to Ambiguity in Adolescent Females With and Without Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (ED) typically emerge in adolescence, a critical period for brain development and peer bonding. Interpersonal difficulties-particularly social anxiety-frequently co-occur with ED. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide that modulates social cognition and linked to prosocial effects. To date, no study has investigated oxytocin's effects on negative interpretation bias toward ambiguous information in adolescents with ED. METHODS: Forty-eight female adolescents aged 16 to 17 years with and without EDs took part in a placebo-controlled, double-blinded, randomised, crossover trial
