Insights into phenanthrene attenuation by hydroxyl radicals from reduced iron-bearing mineral oxygenation.

The oxygenation of Fe(II)-bearing minerals for hydroxyl radicals (HO•) formation and contaminant attenuation receive increasing attention, while the mechanisms for specific Fe(II) species in manipulating HO• formation and contaminant attenuation are unclear. Herein, a total of four Fe(III)-bearing minerals were applied in the reduction-oxygenation processes to produce HO•. Results showed that the total HO• generated from the Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides were significantly higher than those from the Fe-silicates, with the order of goethite and hematite (~1500 μmol kg-1) > Fe-montmorillonite (~550 μmol kg

The degradation of dissolved organic matter in black and odorous water by humic substance-mediated Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle under redox fluctuation.

In nature, the hydroxyl radical (•OH) is produced during the anaerobic-aerobic transition when groundwater level fluctuates. In addition, the •OH is also detected in iron-bearing clay minerals and iron oxides during the redox process. Goethite is one of the most stable iron oxides involved in biogeochemical cycles. In this study, the coexisting humic acid (HA) enhanced the generation of Fe(II) during the iron reduction process and accelerated the generation of •OH in the redox process of goethite. The organic contaminants in black and odorous water were decomposed by constructing an iron-reduc

Enhanced oxidation and stabilization of arsenic in a soil-rice system by phytosynthesized iron oxide nanomaterials: Mechanistic differences under flooding and draining conditions.

Despite arsenic (As) bioavailability being highly correlated with water status and the presence of iron (Fe) minerals, limited information is currently available on how externally applied Fe nanomaterials in soil-rice systems affect As oxidation and stabilization during flooding and draining events. Herein, the stabilization of As in a paddy soil by a phytosynthesized iron oxide nanomaterials (PION) and the related mechanism was investigated using a combination of chemical extraction and functional microbe analysis in soil at both flooding (60 d) and draining (120 d) stages. The application of

Iron redox cycling in layered clay minerals and its impact on contaminant dynamics: A review.

A majority of clay minerals contain Fe, and the redox cycling of Fe(III)/Fe(II) in clay minerals has been extensively studied as it may fuel the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients and govern the mobility, toxicity and bioavailability of a number of environmental contaminants. There are three types of Fe in clay minerals, including structural Fe sandwiched in the lattice of clays, Fe species in interlayer space and adsorbed on the external surface of clays. They exhibit distinct reactivity towards contaminants due to their differences in redox properties and accessibility to contaminant species

Phenol degradation in iron-based advanced oxidation processes through ferric reduction assisted by molybdenum disulfide.

In the iron-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), direct use of FeIII can be more convenient than FeII but the reduction of FeIII to FeII is a rate-limiting step. Introducing co-catalysts with abundant reducing sites to Fe-based AOPs can be an efficient way to accelerate the Fe redox process. Herein, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was used to enhance the catalytic performance of Fe3+/persulfate (PS) for phenol removal. In the Fe3+/MoS2/PS system, 99.6 ± 0.1% of phenol was removed in 60 min, comparable to that of the Fe2+/PS/MoS2 system (99.1 ± 0.3%). With the help of MoS2, 99.3 ± 4.2% of Fe3

Solid-Water Interface Interaction of Selenium with Fe(II)-Bearing Minerals and Aqueous Fe(II) and S(-II) Ions in the Near-Field of the Radioactive Waste Disposal System.

Selenium can be highly toxic in excess for both animals and humans. However, since its mobile forms can be easily adsorbed with ferric minerals, its mobility in the natural oxic environment is generally not an issue. Still, the removal and immobilization of the long-lived radioactive isotope 79Se from the contaminated anoxic waters is currently a significant concern. 79Se can be accessible in the case of radionuclides' leaching from radioactive waste disposals, where anoxic conditions prevail and where ferrous ions and Fe(II)-bearing minerals predominate after corrosion processes (e.g., magnet

Effect of ZnSO4, MnSO4 and FeSO4 on the Partial Hydrogenation of Benzene over Nano Ru-Based Catalysts.

Nano Ru-based catalysts, including monometallic Ru and Ru-Zn nanoparticles, were synthesized via a precipitation method. The prepared catalysts were evaluated on partial hydrogenation of benzene towards cyclohexene generation, during which the effect of reaction modifiers, i.e., ZnSO4, MnSO4, and FeSO4, was investigated. The fresh and the spent catalysts were thoroughly characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, XRF, and DFT studies. It was found that Zn2+ or Fe2+ could be adsorbed on the surface of a monometallic Ru catalyst, where a stabilized complex could be formed between the cations and the cy

Phosphorus Recovery from Wastewater Prominently through a Fe(II)-P Oxidizing Pathway in the Autotrophic Iron-Dependent Denitrification Process.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater can be completed by iron-involved autotrophic denitrification via forming Fe(III)-P precipitates and/or adsorbing P onto Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. However, so far, most studies focused on the final P-containing products, while the P-capturing pathways in such a process remain unclear. In this work, autotrophic iron-dependent denitrification (AIDD) was used as a typical anoxic iron-involved P-capturing biosystem to investigate the main P recovery pathways. The AIDD biosystem showed a relatively stable capability of capturing P coupled with nitrate reduction.

Cyanide binding to ferrous and ferric microperoxidase-11.

Microperoxidase-11 (MP11) is an undecapeptide derived from horse heart cytochrome c (cytc). MP11 is characterized by a covalently linked solvent-exposed heme group, the heme-Fe atom being axially coordinated by a histidyl residue. Here, the reactions of ferrous and ferric MP11 (MP11-Fe(II) and MP11-Fe(III), respectively) with cyanide have been investigated from the kinetic and thermodynamic viewpoints, at pH 7.0 and 20.0 °C. Values of the second-order rate constant for cyanide binding to MP11-Fe(II) and MP11-Fe(III) are 4.5 M(-1) s(-1) and 8.9 × 10(3) M(-1) s(-1), respectively. Values of the f

Reduction of Ag(I), Au(III), Cu(II), and Hg(II) by Fe(II)/Fe(III) hydroxysulfate green rust.

Green rusts are mixed Fe(II)/Fe(III) hydroxides that are found in many suboxic environments where they are believed to play a central role in the biogeochemical cycling of iron. X-ray absorption fine structure analysis of hydroxysulfate green rust suspensions spiked with aqueous solutions of AgCH(3)COO, AuCl(n)(OH)(4-n), CuCl(2), or HgCl(2) showed that Ag(I), Au(III), Cu(II), and Hg(II) were readily reduced to Ag(0), Au(0), Cu(0), and Hg(0). Imaging of the resulting solids from the Ag(I)-, Au(III)-, and Cu(II)-amended green rust suspensions by transmission electron microscopy indicated the for

Fortification of foods with nano-iron: its uptake and potential toxicity: current evidence, controversies, and research gaps.

Iron fortification is a very popular practice in several countries, particularly in countries in which a large proportion of the population is suffering from iron deficiency, as in lower-middle-income countries. Food fortification with iron salts is a difficult operation, because most iron complexes (ferrous sulfate, ferrous chloride) are water soluble, which can cause undesirable alterations to the sensory properties of the food carriers. On the other hand, insoluble iron salts (eg, ferric pyrophosphate) do not have an unpleasant taste or color, but their bioavailability is low. These issues

Modification of Biochemical Properties of Nitrosothiol by Fe3+ Cation: A Presumable Physiological Role.

In the presence of Fe3+ cation, S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) loses the potency to inhibit catalase in the system containing hemoglobin (an NO trap) with iron chelator or -SH inhibitor (a "sulfhydric poison" Hg2+). In the absence of hemoglobin, the inhibitory potency is retained in both cases. These properties are characteristic of dinitrosyl-iron complexes containing ferrous iron and thiols (DNIC/RSH). Since the potency to inhibit catalase results from the presence of -NO group, its loss in the presence of hemoglobin relates probably to transfer of this group to hemoglobin. The nitrosothiols ar

Efficient utilization of the electron energy of antibiotics to accelerate Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle in heterogeneous Fenton reaction induced by bamboo biochar/schwertmannite.

The discharge of antibiotics evokes environmental health crisis, and is also a waste of organic energy. Currently, heterogeneous Fenton for antibiotics removal has attracted growing attentions due to wide pH range and no iron sludge production, however, it often suffers from a low formation rate of Fe(II), resulting in difficult application of heterogeneous Fenton technology in sewage treatment. To overcome this drawback, bamboo biochar (BB) is coupled with schwertmannite (Sch) through Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-mediated Fe(II) oxidation reaction to obtain a heterogeneous catalyst (Sch/BB)

Insight into the Photodegradation of Microplastics Boosted by Iron (Hydr)oxides.

Iron (hydr)oxides as a kind of natural mineral actively participate in the transformation of organic pollutants, but there is a large knowledge gap in their impacts on photochemical processes of microplastics (MPs). This study is the first to examine the degradation of two ordinary plastic materials, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), mediated by iron (hydr)oxides (goethite and hematite) under simulated solar light irradiation. Both iron (hydr)oxides significantly promoted the degradation of MPs (particularly PP) with a greater effect by goethite than hematite, related to hydroxyl radic

Efficient chemisorption of organophosphorous redox probes on indium tin oxide surfaces under mild conditions.

We report a mild and straightforward one-step chemical surface functionalization of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes by redox-active molecules bearing an organophosphoryl anchoring group (i.e., alkyl phosphate or alkyl phosphonate group). The method takes advantage of simple passive adsorption in an aqueous solution at room temperature. We show that organophosphorus compounds can adsorb much more strongly and stably on an ITO surface than analogous redox-active molecules bearing a carboxylate or a boronate moiety. We provide evidence, through quantitative electrochemical characterization (i.e

The reduction of nitrobenzene by Fe(II)-goethite-hematite heterogeneous systems: Insight from thermodynamic parameters of reduction potential.

Determining the contaminants reduction rate by dissolved ferrous iron (Fe(II)aq) bound to iron oxides is curial for evaluating the abiotic attenuation of contaminants in aquifers. However, few studies have assessed the contaminants reduction rate controlled by thermodynamic parameters in heterogeneous systems with different iron oxides. In this study, a linear free energy relationship (LFER) was established between the nitrobenzene reduction rate and the thermodynamic driving force (reduction potential (EH) and pH) in Fe(II)aq-goethite-hematite co-existing systems. Results showed that the redu

Incorporation of Cu into Goethite Stimulates Oxygen Activation by Surface-Bound Fe(II) for Enhanced As(III) Oxidative Transformation.

The dark production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) coupled to biogeochemical cycling of iron (Fe) plays a pivotal role in controlling arsenic transformation and detoxification. However, the effect of secondary atom incorporation into Fe(III) oxyhydroxides on this process is poorly understood. Here, we show that the presence of oxygen vacancy (OV) as a result of Cu incorporation in goethite substantially enhances the As(III) oxidation by Fe(II) under oxic conditions. Electrochemical and density functional theory (DFT) evidence reveals that the electron transfer (ET) rate constant is enhanced

Sulfate availability drives the reductive transformation of schwertmannite by co-cultured iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Schwertmannite (Sch) is a highly bioavailable iron-hydroxysulfate mineral commonly found in acid mine drainage contaminated environment rich in sulfate (SO42-). Microbial-mediated Sch transformation has been well-studied, however, the understanding of how SO42- availability affects the microbial-mediated Sch transformation and the secondary minerals influence microbes is relatively limited. This study examined the effect of SO42- availability on the iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) and SO42--reducing bacteria (SRB) consortium-mediated Sch transformation and the resulting secondary minerals in tur

Mn(II) Acceleration of the Picolinic Acid-Assisted Fenton Reaction: New Insight into the Role of Manganese in Homogeneous Fenton AOPs.

The homogeneous Fe-catalyzed Fenton reaction remains an attractive advanced oxidation process for wastewater treatment, but sustaining the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle at a convenient pH without the costly input of energy or reductants remains a challenge. Mn(II) is known to accelerate the Fenton reaction, yet the mechanism has never been confidently established.
