The development of facial musculature and expressions in the human fetus represents a critical intersection of developmental biology, neurology, and evolutionary anthropology, offering insights into early neurological and social development. Fetal facial expressions, shaped by Cranial Nerve VII, reflect evolutionary adaptations for nonverbal communication and exhibit minimal asymmetry in universal expressions. Advancements in 4D ultrasound imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) have introduced innovative methods for analyzing these movements, revealing their potential as diagnostic tools for

A cornual heterotopic pregnancy, with positive fetal heart, was successfully sutured and resected using laparoscopic techniques, at approximately 7.5 weeks' gestation. The coexistent intrauterine pregnancy was induced at approximately 37.5 weeks' gestation for mild growth restriction, mild oligohydramnios, and decreased fetal body movements. The patient vaginally delivered a live female after approximately 2 hours of uneventful labor.

Intestinal volvulus without malrotation is a rare disease that causes volvulus of the small intestine despite normal intestinal rotation and fixation. We encountered a neonate with this disease who developed early jaundice and was suspected to have a fetal onset. This patient was characterized by early jaundice complicating intestinal volvulus without malrotation and is considered to have exhibited reduced fetal movement and early jaundice as a result of volvulus, necrosis, and hemorrhage of the small intestine in the fetal period. If abdominal distention accompanied by early jaundice is noted…

Fetal supraventricular tachyarrhythmias are very rarely associated with congenital heart diseases. Usually a circus movement (= reentry), often associated with a preexcitation, and occasionally an atrial ectopic focus are suggested as the pathophysiologic mechanisms of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. In the reported case - atrial flutter, complete common atrioventricular canal with fetal trisomy 18 - the atrial flutter was probably provoked by the dilatation of the atria due to the regurgitation of both atrioventricular valves. This case indicates the need for a detailed echocardiographic e

We studied maternal and fetal blood pressure, heart rate, arterial blood gases and fetal behavioral state alterations in response to maternally administered cocaine hydrochloride in 11 pregnant sheep. Cocaine administration to the ewe caused a dose-dependent increase in maternal blood pressure and heart rate and in fetal blood pressure, and a decrease in fetal arterial oxygen tension. In the ewe, blood pressure changes corresponded linearly to dose administered (r = 0.88, p less than 0.001). Blood pressure changes were correlated to peak plasma cocaine concentration in the ewe (r = 0.52, p les

We present a case of intrauterine fetal death resulting from deliberate warfarin administration to a pregnant woman. During the 18th week of gestation, the pregnant woman developed sudden, unexplained ecchymoses on both lower limbs. One week later, obstetric ultrasound confirmed the absence of fetal cardiac activity and movement, and clinical evaluation revealed significantly abnormal coagulation parameters with severely reduced activities of vitamin K-dependent factors FII (96% decrease), FVII (96% decrease), FIX (93% decrease), and FX (93% decrease). Then, labor was induced, leading to deliv

The perinatal outcome of 27 pregnancies in which antepartum fetal activity testing revealed fetal heart rate acceleration to be either absent or less than 10 beats per minute for 80 minutes is presented. At delivery, each pregnancy was found to have one or more features consistent with uteroplacental insufficiency. These included fetal growth retardation (74%), oligohydramnios (81%), fetal acidosis (41%), meconium (30%), and placental infarction (93%). There were four fetal and seven neonatal deaths, for a perinatal mortality of 41%. Despite delivery of all live-born infants by cesarean sectio

The respiratory movements the human fetus makes in utero can be detected and used as a valuable aid in determining fetal well-being. Their presence or absence, amplitude, and duration can all provide important information. Their absence, however, does not carry a poor prognosis unless other indices of fetal status, such as the nonstress test and oxytocin-challenge contraction-stress test, are also abnormal at the same time.

BACKGROUND: Fetal akinesia deformation sequence syndrome (FADS, OMIM 208150) is characterised by decreased fetal movement (fetal akinesia) as well as intrauterine growth restriction, arthrogryposis, and developmental anomalies (eg, cystic hygroma, pulmonary hypoplasia, cleft palate, and cryptorchidism). Mutations in components of the acetylcholine receptor (AChR) pathway have previously been associated with FADS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report on a family with recurrent fetal loss, where the parents had five affected fetuses/children with FADS and one healthy child. The fetuses displayed no f…

OBJECTIVES: To discuss diagnosis and management of a case of a rare fetal tumor complicated by fetal anemia due to intratumoral hemorrhage.
CASE REPORT: We report on a 29-week-old fetus with a tumor in the posterior left shoulder region. The morphologic aspect of the tumor, lack of fetal movements and an increased middle cerebral artery (MCA) peak systolic velocity (PSV) were indicative of fetal anemia caused by intratumoral bleeding. Following intravascular blood transfusion the pregnancy was safely prolonged for 15 days, during which lung maturity was induced. After delivery the neonate und…

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of total intestinal aganglionosis (TIA), which is the rarest form of Hirschsprung disease (HD) and is difficult to diagnose prenatally owing to nonspecific prenatal ultrasound findings.
CASE REPORT: In a 34-year-old primipara with a history of HD (total colonic aganglionosis), intestinal dilatation with intestinal movement like peristalsis was observed in the fetus starting at 36 weeks of gestation. By 38 weeks of gestation, the fetal abdominal circumference had increased, prompting cesarean section delivery. Prenatal ultrasound and postnatal barium enema findings

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) refers to the development of multiple joint contractures affecting two or more areas of the body prior to birth. It affects approximately 1 in 3000 individuals, mostly reported in individuals of Asian, African and European descent with equal incidence in males and females. Arthrogryposis is associated with over 400 medical conditions and 350 known genes with considerable variability in phenotypic expression. The primary underlying mechanism is decreased fetal movement during development. Prenatal imaging is crucial in early diagnosis by identifying feta…

Huntington's disease (HD) produces severe neurodegeneration in the striatum leading to disabling motor impairments, including the loss of control of skilled reaching movements. Fetal GABAergic transplants can physically replace the lost striatal cells but with only partial success in functional recovery. Here, we aimed to determine the extent and quality of the repair produced by fetal cell transplantation through an in-depth analysis of reaching behavior in the quinolinic acid-lesioned rat model of HD. Control, quinolinic acid-lesioned plus sham graft, and quinolinic acid-lesioned plus graft

Human and non-human primates produce rhythmical sounds as soon as they are born. These early vocalizations are important for soliciting the attention of caregivers. How they develop remains a mystery. The orofacial movements necessary for producing these vocalizations have distinct spatiotemporal signatures. Therefore, their development could potentially be tracked over the course of prenatal life. We densely and longitudinally sampled fetal head and orofacial movements in marmoset monkeys using ultrasound imaging. We show that orofacial movements necessary for producing rhythmical vocalizatio

Magnetic resonance imaging has potential as an imaging technique in obstetrics. Its application has been limited by the amount of image degradation that occurs as a result of fetal movement during the long imaging times. By use of a fast-scan imaging technique good images are obtained of fetal anatomy in 3 to 14 seconds per image, depending on the setting used. Different organs could be visualized by varying the setting. Magnetic resonance imaging complements the role of ultrasonography in fetal visualization. It also allows clear fetal imaging in such high-risk situations as maternal obesity …
