Image enhancement network based on fiber topology-preserving multi-module fusion for neuron reconstruction.

The rapid development of optical labeling and imaging technologies has enabled scientists to capture three-dimensional images of mammalian brains at the single-neuron level. However, it has also brought about numerous technical challenges. In neuronal images, fibers exhibit lower fluorescence intensity than cell bodies and are densely packed, making it difficult to distinguish fiber signals from background noise or resolve connectivity accurately. While sparse high-brightness labeling and sensitive imaging technologies have partially addressed these issues, they have not been fundamentally res

A novel structure luminous flexible fiber was prepared via aerosol jet printing.

Utilizing aerosol jet printing (AJP), this study achieves a breakthrough in fabricating luminescent fibers with superior optical performance and flexibility. The Y2O3:Eu3+ coated high silica glass fibers demonstrate luminous efficiency twice that of traditional methods, retaining 80% after 250 bending cycles and 90% after sweat immersion. This AJP technique not only elevates the potential of smart fabrics but also represents a significant innovation in lighting technology, providing new ideas for advanced functional fiber fabrication.

Performance assessment of novel side firing safe tips for endodontic applications.

During root canal or periodontal treatment, directing laser energy onto the walls of the root canal is essential for effective disinfection. This study assessed the performance of four different fiber modifications that have increased lateral emission, including three designs with safe tips to reduce irradiation directed toward the root apex. Free-running pulsed infrared lasers (Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, and Er,Cr:YSGG) and a diode laser (980 nm) were used in combination with plain ended (forward emitting) laser fibers; conical laser fibers, side firing honeycomb pattern fibers without a safe end; honey

Recharging the battery of implantable biomedical devices by light.

This article describes a new powering system for implantable medical devices that could significantly increase their lifetime. The idea is based on the substitution of the usual implantable device battery for an electric accumulator (rechargeable battery), which is fed by the electric power generated by a photovoltaic converter inside the implantable device. Light impinges on the photovoltaic device through an optical fiber going from the photovoltaic device to just beneath the patient's epidermis. Light can enter the optical fiber by passing through the skin. A complete power-by-light system

Detection of Yersinia pestis fraction 1 antigen with a fiber optic biosensor.

A fiber optic biosensor was used to detect the fraction 1 (F1) antigen from Yersinia pestis, the etiologic agent of plague. The instrument employs an argon ion laser (514 nm) to launch light into a long-clad fiber and measures the fluorescence produced by an immunofluorescent complex formed in the evanescent wave region. This sensing area is a short section (12.5 cm) at the end of the optical fiber from which the cladding has been removed and in which the silica core has been tapered. Capture antibodies, which bind to F1 antigen, were immobilized on the core surface to form the basis of the sa

From the Field - Assessing Feeding and Swallowing Function in Breastfeeding Infants Via Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES).

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a procedure utilized by speech language pathologists to evaluate swallowing function in infants and children. FEES has been found to be a valid and reliable procedure for the assessment of pediatric dysphagia. It is the only option for instrumental examination of swallowing in breastfeeding infants. This article describes the differences between the more common videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) and FEES, as well as management of interprofessional collaboration.

Is there a role for fibreoptic bronchoscopy in patients presenting with haemoptysis and negative CT? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Haemoptysis can be a feature of lung cancer and patients are typically fast-tracked for evaluation with chest radiography, contrast-enhanced CT and fibreoptic bronchoscopy (FOB). OBJECTIVE: We aim to explore whether FOB should be conducted as a component of the routine evaluation of non-massive haemoptysis, especially in the context of suspected lung cancer. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Library were searched for studies comparing FOB with CT in the evaluation of non-massive haemoptysis while reporting at least one of the listed primary outcomes. Primary outcomes includ

I-gel Plus acts as a superior conduit for fiberoptic intubation than standard i-gel.

The supraglottic airway (SGA) is widely used. I-gel Plus is a next-generation i-gel with some improvements, including facilitation of fiberoptic tracheal intubation (FOI). To compare the performance of i-gel Plus and standard i-gel as conduits for FOI, a Thiel-embalmed cadaveric study was conducted. Twenty-two anesthesiologists were enrolled as operators in Experiment 1. The i-gel Plus and standard i-gel were inserted into one cadaver, and the FOI was performed through each SGA. The primary outcome was time required for FOI. The secondary outcomes were the number of attempts and visual analog

Training to Analyze Functional Parameters with Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing: A Scoping Review.

Analyzing fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is challenging and requires training to ensure the proficiency of health professionals and improve reliability. This scoping review aims to identify and map the available evidence on training health professionals to analyze FEES functional parameters. The method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. The search was performed in MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL databases, and in the gray literature. Two blinded independent reviewers screened articles by

Dual-wavelength fiber-optic technique to assist needle cricothyroidotomy.

The traditional needle cricothyroidotomy procedure is performed blindly without any medical equipment. Complications including posterior tracheal wall perforation, accidental vessel puncture, and missed tracheal puncture are reported. Therefore, we proposed a dual-wavelength fiber-optic technique based on the technique of near-infrared spectroscopy to assist operators performing needle cricothyroidotomy in a swine model. We embedded optical fibers in a 16-gauge intravenous needle catheter. Real-time data were displayed on an oscilloscope, and we used the program to analyze the data immediately

Cryodebulking of endobronchial hamartoma via fibreoptic bronchoscopy and literature review.

Endobronchial hamartoma is a rare tumour. We report a 65-year-old woman with a history of recurrent pneumonia. Bronchoscopy revealed a 1 cm endobronchial mass obstructing the left upper lobe bronchus. Histopathological examination was consistent with a pulmonary hamartoma. This lesion was successfully debulked endoscopically with the use of a flexible cryoprobe without any complications. This case highlights both the importance of investigating recurrent pneumonia and the usefulness of endoscopic recanalisation in an obstructed segmental bronchus.

Direct laryngoscopy assisted fiberoptic intubation: A novel technique for the pediatric airway.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a novel intubation technique for difficult pediatric airways. METHODS: This two-provider technique requires a direct laryngoscope and a flexible fiberoptic laryngoscope. One provider performs direct laryngoscopy which allows for introduction of the flexible laryngoscope. The second provider inserts the flexible laryngoscope with the endotracheal tube loaded, through the oropharynx in to the subglottis. RESULTS: We report three pediatric patients that were initially unable to be intubated by conventional methods. We were ultimately able to successfully intubate these p

A randomised controlled trial comparing fibreoptic-guided tracheal intubation through two supraglottic devices: Ambu® AuraGain™ laryngeal mask and LMA® Fastrach™.

The Ambu®AuraGain™ laryngeal mask (LM) (Ambu A/S, Ballerup, Denmark) is one of the few readily available second-generation supraglottic airway devices (SADs) that offer a conduit for fibreoptic-guided endotracheal intubation. We aimed to compare fibreoptic intubation through this device with the LMA® (laryngeal mask airway) Fastrach™ (Teleflex Medical, Co. Westmeath, Ireland), which has been a recommended dedicated rescue device for the management of the unanticipated difficult airway. This randomised controlled trial compared a previously described fibreoptic score in 116 patients with no kno

[A Case of Penetrating Injury of the Neck in Which It Was Difficult to Secure the Airway].

A 76-year-old man sustained a penetrating neck injury caused by a metal rake following an accidental fall. On admission, he showed clear consciousness and no dyspnea. CT revealed that the tips of three prongs of the rake were located close to the vertebral artery and trachea. Cerebral angiography identified an injury to the vertebral artery, but no injury to the trachea or oropharynx. He was scheduled for vertebral artery embolization under general anesthesia. Since the neck must be stabilized, we chose to perform rapid sequence induction of general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation usin

Fabrication of the optical fiber pH sensor based on CdSe/ZnS quantum dot.

During the past decade, there has been a lot of research on the application of quantum dots (QDs) in photonics and biotechnology. QDs are semiconductor nanocrystals which show many peculiar optical and electrical properties due to their quantum confinement effects. In this work, the correlation of the fluorescence intensity of QDs and the pH under ambient temperature was studied. An optical fiber pH sensor was prepared using CdSe/ZnS carboxyl quantum dots as sensing media. QDs with different sizes and emission colors (green, yellow, and red) were immobilized on the surface of the optical fiber
