Applying the MANifest Health Theory to Male Firefighter Lifestyle: A Conceptual Review Using the FANTASTIC Lifestyle Assessment.

Firefighters face substantial long-term health risks related to cardiovascular disease, sleep disruption, occupational stress, inconsistent preventive care, and lifestyle behaviors shaped by fire-service culture. Although firefighter health research has traditionally emphasized acute injury, sudden cardiac events, toxic exposures, and psychological trauma, less attention has been given to the broader lifestyle patterns through which chronic risk accumulates in both volunteer and career firefighters. This conceptual review argues that firefighter lifestyle should be understood as a men's health…

Firefighter motion capture data set and biomechanical analysis of task-specific gear effects and loading asymmetries.

Firefighting tasks are strenuous and injury-prone. This study developed a biomechanical dataset from 20 professional firefighters performing equipment carry, hose drag, body drag and stair climb, with and without gear, using motion capture and musculoskeletal simulations. Biomechanical loading and activity asymmetry were analysed. Gear effects were found to be task-dependent: trunk muscle activity increased across activities, hip joint reaction forces consistently rose and ankle torque increased only during body drag. In stair climb, ankle torque decreased with gear, while knee and hip torques…

Non-destructive surface sampling of PFAS exposure on firefighter protective gears: Potential implications for occupational exposure.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of anthropogenic pollutants that pose significant global environmental and health challenges. While PFAS exposure occurs through various pathways, occupational exposure among firefighters is particularly concerning. This study introduces a non-invasive, and non-destructive sample collection protocol using textile wipes to assess PFAS on firefighter safety gear and potential health issues. Dampened polypropylene fabrics were used to swab 12 firefighter turnout gear sets, including jacket shoulders, pant shins, inside and outside of SCBA mas…

The Relative Burden of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses in Firefighters: An Analysis of Washington Workers' Compensation Claims, 2006-2020.

Firefighters face many hazards on the job and have a high rate of work-related injuries and illnesses (WRII). We analyzed Washington workers' compensation claims from 2006-2020 to characterize WRII in firefighters compared to law enforcement officers and "all other" workers. There were 9187 compensable claims for firefighters, 7801 for law enforcement officers, and 586,939 for "all other" workers. Nearly 40% of claims for firefighters were work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). The claim rate per 10,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) firefighters was 716.4, which is significantly higher t…

Firefighters and the liver: Exposure to PFAS and PAHs in relation to liver function and serum lipids (CELSPAC-FIREexpo study).

INTRODUCTION: Firefighting is one of the most hazardous occupations due to exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Such exposure is suspected to affect the cardiometabolic profile, e.g., liver function and serum lipids. However, only a few studies have investigated the impact of this specific exposure among firefighters. METHODS: Men included in the CELSPAC-FIREexpo study were professional firefighters (n = 52), newly recruited firefighters in training (n = 58), and controls (n = 54). They completed exposure questionnaires and provid…
