Effects of unilateral ocular motor nerve palsies on smooth pursuit eye movements in adult patients.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of single ocular muscle weakness on smooth pursuit eye movements. METHODS: Infrared video recordings of horizontal and vertical eye movements were obtained from 14 adult patients with either unilateral abducens nerve palsy or trochlear nerve palsy. During the recordings, subsequent series of horizontal, vertical and oblique ramp stimuli of 10 degrees/s constant target velocity and +/-10 degrees amplitude were presented under monocular viewing conditions. RESULTS: In both forms of ocular nerve palsies, similar changes of pursuit eye

Visual acuity testing with preferential looking in mental retardation.

Twenty-six mentally retarded children and young adults, most of them with severe neurological deficits, in the age range 5-24 years, were examined ophthalmologically, and their binocular visual acuities were tested with 'operant preferential looking' according to the technique of Mayer & Dobson (1980). Five of the subjects did not co-operate sufficiently for visual testing, although 3 had no ocular abnormalities that would affect binocular acuity. The visual acuity levels determined with 'preferential looking' ranged from 1.29 to 0.03 in the 21 subjects that could be tested. Two children with

[Experimental optimization of paraffin sectioning techniques for the eyeball].

Objective: To explore optimized protocols for paraffin section preparation of the eyeball to enhance the histological visualization of key ocular structures. Methods: It was an experimental research, conducted from September 2022 to September 2024. The first experiment involved 18 porcine eyeballs, which were divided into five groups (six subgroups) by the random number table method. Three fixatives were tested: Davidson's solution (Davidson group), a mixture of 1% paraformaldehyde and 1.25% glutaraldehyde (mixed solution group), and 4% paraformaldehyde (formaldehyde group). Each fixative was

[Vergence dynamics and variability of fixation disparity in school children with reading-spelling disorders].

BACKGROUND: New computer-controlled psychophysical procedures allow one to measure some temporal aspects of binocular coordination. The present study investigates whether these procedures can be operated by children and whether the tests are useful to detect previously reported impairments in dynamics and stability of vergence in children with disability in reading and writing. METHODS: To assess the variability in vergence accuracy (fixation disparity), a stationary fusion stimulus appeared on a computer monitor superimposed by short-term presentations of two dichoptic vertical nonius lines

Systematic approach to pediatric ocular trauma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to evaluate and review the scientific literature on pediatric ocular trauma from the past several years. Recent advancements have recognized mechanisms of injury that may be unique to children, require different treatment course than adults, and raise multiple public health concerns. RECENT FINDINGS: Epidemiologic studies have shown that ocular trauma is a major cause of monocular blindness and potential disability in children worldwide. The mechanisms of injury are quite variable and often found under mundane circumstances. Orbital fractures in c

Novel surgical technique of sutureless artificial iris and intraocular lens scleral fixation using Yamane technique.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel surgical technique of a combined implantation of an artificial iris and a scleral fixated intraocular lens (IOL) using flanged IOL haptics ("Yamane" technique). OBSERVATIONS: The suturelessly implanted artificial iris-IOL-sandwich was stable with good functional as well as aesthetic results. However, our case showed a postoperative intraocular pressure rise. CONCLUSIONS: The presented case demonstrates that a visual as well as cosmetical rehabilitation seems to be possible even after severe, penetrating ocular trauma with profound iris defects. IMPORTANCE: The s

Spatial-chromatic encoding cosmetic contact lenses for enhanced natural eye tracking.

Vision-based analysis of ocular features represents the predominant approach for eye tracking. However, these features are highly susceptible to interference from illumination, eyelid/eyelash occlusion, and individual variations, leading to low recognition rates and diminished tracking accuracy. To address these limitations, eye movement feature enhanced cosmetic contact lenses are proposed, implementing a spatial-chromatic encoding strategy. Employing a head-mounted eye tracker integrated with RGB cameras, this system enables accurate and robust gaze tracking in natural environments. Under ch

Visual search for people wearing protective clothing in a forestial environment - Differences between gaze and behavior.

To prevent hunting accidents, people in forests should be well-visible to others. However, there is debate which kind of protective clothing should be required. We created a database containing photographs of 22 individuals in forestial settings. The database is available online; for the present study a subset of images was used. The photographed persons ("models") wore four different clothing variants adding to typical forest garment: Two conditions included protective clothing, either a reflective vest or a hat with reflective hatband. We included two conditions without protective clothing,

A visual perceptual perspective on gaze in social robotics.

Where and when should a robot look during interaction with humans? Intuitively, human-human interaction serves as the blueprint. In such interactions, gaze plays a central role, both in visually guiding action and in signaling communication. Yet, most social robotics research still relies on the oversimplified eye-mind assumption, equating gaze with visual attention, and often implements gaze behaviors without accounting for perceptual limits or individual variability. We identify three core challenges at the intersection of psychology, visual perception, and robotics: (1) disentangling the du

The Suture-Action-Gaze Efficiency (SAGE) guidance framework reveals expert gaze-action coupling based on a case study of simple interrupted suturing on an artificial skin pad.

Simple interrupted suturing is a foundational surgical skill, yet the expert micro-behaviors that support efficient performance remain undercharacterized, particularly in open surgery at the level of individual stitches. This study examined expert gaze-action coupling during simple interrupted suturing and developed an empirically derived behavioral framework to translate these patterns into structured training guidance. Eight board-certified surgeons performed 335 standardized simple interrupted sutures on artificial skin while wearing Tobii Pro Glasses 3. Gaze and video streams were synchron

Predictive Foveal Processing in Active Vision.

Humans execute rapid saccadic eye movements to inspect objects of interest in high-acuity foveal vision. Even though each saccade entails a large-scale displacement of the retinal image, vision is continuous, and we easily keep track of the location and identity of relevant stimuli. Here, we highlight the contribution of predictive foveal processing to visual continuity. Specifically, we summarize evidence that foveal and even foveolar vision is nonuniform and modulated by attentional allocation. We then describe a set of psychophysical and neuroimaging studies demonstrating that defining feat

Following Randolph Blake's furrow further.

In 1992, Randolph Blake, in collaboration with Robert Cormack and Eric Hiris, reported a strong deviation in perceived direction for a target moving over an oblique, static grating. Here we follow up on this effect, subsequently called the furrow illusion, to determine its origin. We find, unlike Cormack et al., that it is influenced by the luminance of the target and that it does not survive smooth pursuit of a moving fixation that stabilizes the target on the retina. We also introduce an inverted version of the furrow stimulus with the static grating visible only within the moving target rat

Multiplexing of cognitive encoding by oculomotor networks leads to incidental gaze shifts.

Humans and other animals are adept at learning to perform cognitively demanding behavioral tasks. Neurophysiological recordings in nonhuman primates during such tasks find that the requisite cognitive variables are encoded strongly in core oculomotor brain regions. Here, we assembled a large dataset-11 monkeys performing an abstract visual categorization task, surveyed across more than 1,000 neural recording sessions-to reveal that this produces a robust but uninstructed behavioral "tell," observed in all subjects and experiments: small, cognitively modulated eye movements. We find that these

Introducing the kollaR package: A user-friendly open-access solution for eye-tracking analysis and visualization.

Eye tracking has become an increasingly important tool in cognitive and developmental research, providing insights into processes that are difficult to measure otherwise. The majority of eye-tracking studies rely on accurate identification of fixations and saccades in raw data using event classification algorithms (sometimes called fixation filters). Subsequently, it is common to analyze whether fixations or saccades fall into specific areas of interest (AOI). The choice of algorithms can significantly influence study outcomes, especially in special populations such as young children or indivi

Posterior Parietal Cortex Plays a Causal Role in Abstract Memory-Based Visual Categorical Decisions.

Neural activity in the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) correlates with both sensory evaluation and motor planning underlying visuomotor decisions. We previously showed that LIP plays a causal role in visually-based perceptual and categorical decisions, and preferentially contributes to evaluating sensory stimuli over motor planning. In that study, however, monkeys reported their decisions with a saccade to a colored target associated with the correct motion category or direction. Since LIP is known to play a role in saccade planning, it remains unclear whether LIP's causal role in such deci

Neural correlates of eye contact and social function in autism spectrum disorder.

Reluctance to make eye contact during natural interactions is a central diagnostic criterion for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the underlying neural correlates for eye contacts in ASD are unknown, and diagnostic biomarkers are active areas of investigation. Here, neuroimaging, eye-tracking, and pupillometry data were acquired simultaneously using two-person functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during live "in-person" eye-to-eye contact and eye-gaze at a video face for typically-developed (TD) and participants with ASD to identify the neural correlates of live eye-to-eye con

Free viewing exploration in schizophrenia: Review of evidence from laboratory settings to natural environment.

Several studies have investigated visual processing impairment in schizophrenia. The literature on visual exploration has described restricted scanning in schizophrenia patients. This gaze behavior is characterized by increased fixation duration, a reduced scan path length and avoidance of salient features of the face with emotional content. The aim of this paper is to give an insight on the latest update on scan path deficit. Abnormal gaze exploration was replicated in various visual stimuli. This review describes gaze patterns with stimuli that imply minimal to high cognitive process: figure

Brief Report: Atypical Visual Exploration in Autism Spectrum Disorder Cannot be Attributed to the Amygdala.

Prior studies have emphasized the contribution of aberrant amygdala structure and function in social aspects of autism. However, it remains largely unknown whether amygdala dysfunction directly impairs visual attention and exploration as has been observed in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Here, gaze patterns were directly compared between a rare amygdala lesion patient and adults with ASD when they freely viewed static images of complex natural scenes. The amygdala lesion patient showed a gaze pattern that was more similar to controls rather than that of the ASD group, which was

Effect of different font sizes and of spaces between words on eye movement performance: An eye tracker study in dyslexic and non-dyslexic children.

The aim of the present study was to explore the possible change in eye movement performance in a group of dyslexic and non-dyslexic children reading four lines of a text with different font sizes and spaces between the words. Fifteen dyslexic children from 7 to 12 years old and two groups of fifteen non-dyslexic children, respectively reading and chronological age-matched group, participated in this study. Horizontal eye movements from both eyes were recorded by a video-system (EyeBrain T2®) while the children were reading a text. Three different texts were used with different font sizes and s

Redirecting gaze to improve the cosmetic appearance of strabismus.

PURPOSE: We studied a behavioral technique in which strabismics can reduce the detectability of their eye turn by appropriately redirecting their gaze. We tested the efficacy of this technique for various amounts of strabismus and different positions of gaze. METHODS: We took digital images of a model gazing in different lateral directions and digitally edited them to simulate fixation with one eye on different lateral locations whereas the other eye was misaligned from the first by +/-0, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 Delta. Then we asked 22 lay observers to examine each of the images and to report w
