Pasteurellosis is a common zoonotic infection that occurs after an animal bite or scratch (B/S). We compared the clinical features of six patients with non-B/S pasteurellosis with those of 14 patients with B/S infections. Pasteurella multocida was identified with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry in all six non-B/S infections, whereas 13 of the 14 B/S infections were identified with diagnostic kits. The non-B/S infections were pneumonia (n = 3), skin and soft tissue infections (n = 2), and bacteremia (n = 1). Pneumonia occurred in two patients with un

Pigs can be characterised as resistant (R) or non-resistant (NR) at an early age (1 to 2 weeks) by means of a backtest. In the test the animal is put on its back and the number of bouts of resistance is used to characterise the animal. The test is performed twice with 1 week interval and only pigs that show a consistent response in both tests are classified as either R or NR pigs. On average eighty percent of a population can be classified by this test. R and NR pigs show consistent behavioural, physiological and immunological differences when tested in various challenge test in later life. Th

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal diseases are the most frequently diagnosed problem in small animal veterinary medicine. Although their exact cause is not fully understood, bacteria play an important role in their development. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium. The living environment of this bacterium may be soil and water; however, it can also be found in humans and animals. Antibiotic treatment of periodontitis may be complicated by the carbapenem resistance of some P. aeruginosa strains, if these bacteria are found to be an aetiological agent. The a

Mosquito-borne diseases cause several hundred thousand deaths worldwide every year. Deciphering mosquito host-seeking behavior is essential to prevent disease transmission through mosquito capture and surveillance. Despite recent substantial progress, we still lack a comprehensive quantitative understanding of how visual and other sensory cues guide mosquitoes to their targets. Here, we combined three-dimensional infrared tracking of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with Bayesian dynamical systems inference to learn a quantitative biophysical model of mosquito host-seeking behavior. Trained on more th

The evolution of archosaurs provides an important context for understanding the mechanisms behind major functional transformations in vertebrates, such as shifts from sprawling to erect limb posture and the acquisition of powered flight. While comparative anatomy and ichnology of extinct archosaurs have offered insights into musculoskeletal and gait changes associated with locomotor transitions, reconstructing the evolution of motor control requires data from extant species. However, the scarcity of electromyography (EMG) data from the forelimb, especially of crocodylians, has hindered underst

Activities in space will expose humans to profoundly new environments, challenging human performance and will require innovative supportive technologies. Among these environmental variables, exposure to ionizing radiation is a major concern for astronauts, as the long-term effects of exposure on diverse tissues are poorly understood. This need however creates opportunities for novel approaches, particularly in the development of countermeasures against the effects of ionizing radiation exposure. Carcinogenesis presents a unique challenge as a disease process, due to the inherent complexities o

Previous studies showed that birds primarily use their hindlimbs to propel themselves into the air in order to take-off. Yet, it remains unclear how the different parts of their musculoskeletal system move to produce the necessary acceleration. To quantify the relative motions of the bones during the terrestrial phase of take-off, we used biplanar fluoroscopy in two species of birds, diamond dove (Geopelia cuneata) and zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We obtained a detailed 3D kinematics analysis of the head, the trunk and the three long bones of the left leg. We found that the entire body a

Combinations of female wingbeat acoustic cues and visual cues were evaluated to determine their potential for use in male Aedes aegypti (L.) traps in peridomestic environments. A modified Centers for Disease control (CDC) light trap using a 350-500 Hz frequency-sweep broadcast from a speaker as an acoustic stimulus, combined with a black poster-board half-cylinder behind the trap as a visual stimulus, captured a significantly greater proportion of males in a laboratory arena during daylight than a CDC trap with the visual stimulus alone or a CDC trap alone without stimuli. Traps of each treatm

BACKGROUND: Since 2010 there has been a resurgence of the saddle gall midge, Haplodiplosis marginata (von Roser), in Belgium and several other European countries, with this pest sometimes causing severe damage in cereals. In 2012 and 2013, field trials were conducted in heavily infested fields to assess its impact on winter wheat crops and to determine efficient ways of dealing with severe infestations.
RESULTS: Crop exposure to H. marginata varied with the different protection methods tried. These methods included 1-4 successive applications of lambda-cyhalothrin. Yield losses were significa

Anatomical evidence and conditioning experiments have suggested that magnetoreceptors innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve are located in the upper beak of homing pigeons. Following these findings it has been proposed that the trigeminally-mediated magnetorececeptors are able to detect magnetic field intensity, which might be useful for a position finding mechanism for pigeons homing from unfamiliar locations. Recent data have shown that, in inexperienced pigeons, section of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve does not impair navigational abilities. Similarly,

We examined the propensity for motion sickness in five anuran species, concentrating our efforts on the treefrog Rhacophorus schlegelii, because it had shown the greatest susceptibility to motion sickness in a previous study. We used parabolic flight as our provocative stimulus and fed all specimens a known volume of food 1.5-3 h before flight. The presence of vomitus in a frog's cage was our indicator of motion sickness. Significantly more emesis was observed in flight-exposed than in control R. schlegelii (P < 0.05). There was no sex difference in susceptibility to motion sickness (P > 0.5).

3H-2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) is used as a histological marker to study the spatial distribution of neuronal activity in the central brain of Drosophila melanogaster under controlled stimulus conditions. Tethered flies injected with the label are kept for 45-90 minutes in the center of a rotating drum carrying on its periphery a single black vertical stripe or a periodic grating. In either stimulus situation, one-half of the flies walk on top of a small black styrofoam ball floating on a jet of air, and one-half are kept flying 1.5 mm above the ball. 1) During walking on the styrofoam ball little 2

Many species of bat emit acoustic signals and use information carried by echoes reflecting from nearby objects to navigate and forage. It is widely documented that echolocating bats adjust the features of sonar calls in response to echo feedback; however, it remains unknown whether audiovocal feedback contributes to sonar call design. Audiovocal feedback refers to the monitoring of one's own vocalizations during call production and has been intensively studied in nonecholocating animals. Audiovocal feedback not only is a necessary component of vocal learning but also guides the control of the

Human acclimatization to both high-altitude and microgravity is crucial for terrestrial and space exploration. Although these extreme environments elicit several similar physiological responses, including autonomic imbalance, metabolic stress, and reduced exercise capacity, the underlying central mechanisms remain unclear. However, these effects appear to be linked to chemoreflex control. This review summarizes current evidence and proposed potential similarities and bioconvergent mechanisms underlying human responses to both terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments.

Aging poses one of the greatest biomedical challenges of our time, with rising rates of frailty, sarcopenia, and cognitive decline globally. Preserving muscle and brain health is central to maintaining independence and quality of life in aging populations. This commentary explores how hibernation research, rooted in comparative physiology, offers unprecedented opportunities for drug discovery and therapeutic innovation. Hibernating animals exhibit remarkable abilities to regulate metabolism, protect the brain and muscles from atrophy, and prevent cellular damage under extreme conditions. These

Previous studies have revealed that muscle atrophy emerges as a significant challenge faced by astronauts during prolonged missions in space. A loss in muscle mass results in a weakening of skeletal muscle strength and function, which will not only contribute to a decline in overall physical performance but also elevate the risk of various age-related diseases. Skeletal muscle atrophy in the microgravity environment is thought to be associated with changes in energy metabolism, protein metabolism, calcium ion homeostasis, myostatin levels, and apoptosis. Modulating some pathways could be a pro

During space flight, astronauts are exposed to various influences of extreme environments and susceptible to develop depression-like behavior. Thus, this study aims to explore the molecular biological mechanism of the cause of depression-like behavior and reveal the effect of Baoyuan Jieyu Formula (BYJYF) on ameliorating depression-like behavior. Here, rats exposed to simulated long-term spaceflight composite stress (LSCS) reduced the sucrose preference rate (P <0.01), and the time of forced swimming immobility and the number of climbing times were also reduced (P < 0.01, P < 0.001). Moreover,
