Focal chorioretinal atrophic lesions in patients treated with hemodialysis.

Five patients treated with hemodialysis had focal chorioretinal atrophic lesions. These lesions had not been noted before the hemodialysis treatment. Although the lesions resembled those of ocular toxoplasmosis and histoplasmosis, serum titers and skin reactions for those organisms were negative or within the normal range. Focal retinochoroidal lesions in patients receiving hemodialysis may indicate a possible sign of infection.

Analysis of risk factors for post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage in adults.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the risk factors for post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) in adult patients (>19 years). METHODS: 275 adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy between 2009 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Possible risk factors associated with PTH were investigated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: PTH occurred in 39 of 275 patients (14.2%). Regarding underlying diseases, PTH occurred more frequently in focal infection of IgA nephropathy. Furthermore, bipolar electrocautery was the other risk factor for PTH on multivariate analysis. CONCLUS…

[The role of chronic dental bacterial infections in the aetiopathogenesis of ischaemic heart disease].

Chronic dental infections, even of low intensity, may cause the development of atherosclerotic changes in arteries, that lead to coronary heart disease. There are many risk factors for atherosclerosis, but the most important are endothelium function disturbances, platelets activation and oxidative changes of plasmatic lipoproteins. Among factors that can induce the epithelium lesions bacterial factor may play an important role. In consequence of the bacterial cell breakdown place the release of endotoxins takes, that lead directly to the damage of endothelial cells. Apart from this direct effe

Acute focal nephritis: its true sonographic face.

BACKGROUND: Acute focal nephritis is an inflammatory process of the renal parenchyma affecting principally the cortex of the kidney. It is considered a midpoint in the spectrum of upper urinary tract infections, ranging from uncomplicated pyelonephritis to intrarenal abscesses. Until recently the hyperechoic sonographic appearance of this lesion was considered uncommon. OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative prevalence of hyperechoic and hypoechoic sonographic appearance of focal renal lesions in patients with the clinical diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis and to correlate the findings with th

Multifocal Oral Epithelial Hyperplasia Associated With Papillomavirus Infection in a Road Killed Brown Howler Monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans).

A free-ranging road-killed brown howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) presented multiple mucosal-colored papules and plaques on oral mucosa. Pathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of epithelial hyperplasia with koilocytosis. Papillomavirus antigens were demonstrated by immunohistochemistry, and PCR was positive for partial amplification of Alouatta guariba papillomavirus 1 DNA.

[Examination of Urinary Sediment in a Patient with Lupus-Like HIV-Associated Immune Complex Kidney Disease (HIVICK) - Case Report and Review of the Literature].

Renal involvement is very common in patients with HIV infection. The phenotype varies from the most frequently "collapsing" variant of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) to "lupus-like HIV-immune complex kidney disease" (HIVICK). The latter is characterized by a histological picture that recalls lupus nephropathy. Through a clinical case, we underline the importance of urinary sediment analysis in patients with suspected glomerulopathy. Findings such as the characteristic cells that show the typical appearance of Herpes virus (HSV) infection or LE cells have significantly supported

Prevalence of Different Courses of Feline Leukaemia Virus Infection in Four European Countries.

Prevalence of progressive feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infection is known to still be high in cats in Europe, especially in Southern Europe, but the prevalence of other outcomes of FeLV infection has not been determined in most countries. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of progressive, regressive, abortive, and focal infection in four European countries, two with a high (Italy, Portugal) and two with a low expected prevalence (Germany, France). Blood samples of 934 cats (Italy: 269; Portugal: 240; France: 107; Germany: 318) were evaluated for the p27 antigen, as well as …

[The molecular biological characteristics of the pathogen of tuberculosis and the pathoanatomic aspects of its fatal outcomes in Irkutsk in 2008-2011].

The paper gives the results of examining 163 autopsy cases of tuberculosis in Irkutsk. The forms of the disease are characterized, by identifying generalized large focal necrotic focal tuberculosis. MIRU-VNTR genotyping defined M. tuberculosis genotypes and established the leading role of the Beijing genotype (65%) in the development of the most severe generalized alterative and exudative changes. 48% of all generalized large focal tuberculosis cases were shown to be HIV-infected. A DS-SIGN gene polymorphism at the -336 A/G position was studied; the most unfavorable combination of AG or GG pol

Should we wait for development of an abscess before we perform incision and drainage?

Deep neck infections are infections (either abscess or cellulitis) that are within the potential spaces and fascial planes of the head and neck. Deep neck infections should not be ignored, and no surgeon should underestimate the necessity of appropriate and timely treatment of deep neck infections due to the serious and potentially life-threatening nature of these infections. This article discusses and reviews the literature with regard to a question that has long been debated in the surgical literature, "Should we wait for the development of an abscess before performing incision and drainage?

Acute kidney injury in a girl with ulcerative colitis and cytomegalovirus-induced focal segmental glomerular sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Mesalamine or 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) has proven efficacy in treating patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Although mesalamine is considered safe, it has been associated with acute interstitial nephritis and renal failure. METHODS: Herein we present a case of a child with UC who developed acute renal failure on mesalamine therapy. RESULTS: A 15-year-old African-American girl with well-controlled UC presented to the Johns Hopkins Hospital with a four-day history of high fever, malaise, generalized body aches, and productive non-bloody cough. Over the next three days, she d

Update on antibiotics used to treat orofacial infections.

Odontogenic infections are most often composed of many different bacteria. The pathogenesis of odontogenic infections depends on the relationship between anaerobic and aerobic bacteria within the infection. Historically, penicillins have been used to treat odontogenic infections. With the ever-increasing bacterial resistance to penicillin-based antibiotics with dental pathogens and concurrent clinical failures with penicillins, other agents have become increasingly attractive. Clindamycin has more recently become a drug of choice for the management of odontogenic infections because of the bact

Acute focal bacterial nephritis in childhood brucellosis.

Brucellosis is an infectious disease transmitted from various animal hosts to man. In children the most common route of infection is unpasteurized milk or milk products. Brucellosis affects the urinary tract uncommonly, most frequently causing orchioepididymitis. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with brucellosis who developed acute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN), documented by sonography, gallium scan, and computed tomography. After appropriate treatment his symptoms and his sonographic abnormality resolved completely. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the assoc

Chronic meningitis in patients with dental infections.

4 patients with a history of initial fever 2--4 weeks passing on to fever peaks every 3rd to 6th day with afebrile intervals repeating for months are presented. Three of them had dental infectious foci mainly in maxillar teeth and 1 patient was treated by a dentist 1 month before onset. None showed meningism or clinical signs of encephalitis. Extensive investigations resulted only in findings from the central nervous system. The EEG was slightly pathological in all cases and papilloedema was found in 2 cases. In the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) a pleocytosis extending over months, transient prese
