Less than One Meal Per Day: Food Insecurity and Deprivation Among Indigenous Oaxacan Farmworkers in California.

Food insecurity and lack of wellbeing among farmworker populations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, are well documented. However, Indigenous migrant farmworker communities remain an understudied group, despite comprising over 40% of the current migrant farmworker labor workforce in California. This mixed-methods study assessed wellbeing and food insecurity among 40 Oaxacan Indigenous migrant farmworker households in the California Central Valley from 2022 to 2023. This study is the first of its kind utilizing the common Self-Reliance Index (SRI) among Indigenous migrant farmworkers.…

Associations between food insecurity, neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage, and humeral shaft fracture healing: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Humeral shaft fractures are common injuries with a high risk of nonunion, particularly when treated nonoperatively. Food insecurity—a modifiable aspect of social disadvantage—is prevalent in orthopedic trauma populations and may adversely impact bone healing. This study aimed to evaluate associations between neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage and humeral shaft fracture healing progression, and investigate current food insecurity screening and management practices. METHODS: Adult patients with humeral shaft fractures at two urban Level-1 trauma centers from 2016 to 2023 w…

Association between food insecurity and mental health outcomes among a convenient sample of Lebanese pregnant women.

Food insecurity (FI) is a pressing public health challenge, suggested to be associated with psychological distress and detrimental effects, especially in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. To date, little is known in Lebanese pregnant women on the association between FI and emotional and behavioral outcomes. Thus, this study aimed to explore the association between FI, and emotional (anxiety, depression, distress) and behavioral (disordered eating, sleep quality) outcomes in a convenient sample of adult Lebanese pregnant women. A cross sectional study involving 146 pregnant women w…

Urban household food insecurity and pediatric malnutrition: evidence from the Divina Providencia Hospital in Luanda, Angola.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity and poverty mechanisms often intertwine, negatively affecting the well-being of families and children, particularly those with acute malnutrition. In urban Angola, limited evidence exists on how socioeconomic deprivations influence household food security and treatment outcomes for malnourished children. Drawing on the Amartya Sen Capability Approach, this study investigates the determinants of household food consumption, weight gain during hospitalization, and outpatient treatment duration among children with acute malnutrition. METHODS: We combined analyses fro…

Food insecurity is a risk factor for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in Latinx children.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common chronic liver disease among US children. Studies have associated food insecurity with MASLD in adults, but there are few studies of pediatric MASLD, particularly in high-risk populations. We assessed the impact of household food insecurity at 4 years of age on MASLD in Latinx children. METHODS: Using a prospective cohort design, Latina mothers were recruited during pregnancy and followed with their children until early to mid-childhood. Our primary exposure was household food insecurity at 4 year…

We evaluated the characteristics of food insecure individuals and whether food insecurity was associated with MASLD and significant hepatic fibrosis in the US population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018, 3441 participants with complete data were enrolled. We defined MASLD and significant hepatic fibrosis (≥ F2) by transient elastography in the absence of…

The main objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of HFI for persons with different types, numbers, and severity of disabilities, and to examine sociodemographic correlates of HFI among this group. DATA AND METHODS: Data from the 2021 Canadian Income Survey (CIS) were used. Disability status was assessed using the short version of the Disability Screening Questions modul…

"It Can Be Confusing": Family Perspectives on Food Insecurity Screening in Urban Pediatric Primary Care Clinics.

Food insecurity, for which families are routinely screened at medical visits, has deleterious health consequences. This study sought to understand the lived experiences of families with lower incomes participating in food insecurity screening at two urban pediatric primary care clinics. Forty-three semi-structured interviews were performed in English and Spanish with families with public insurance after well visits where food insecurity screening was documented. Immersion-crystallization analysis was used to identify salient themes. Families reported discomfort with food insecurity screening, …

Disparities in food insecurity between sexual minority and heterosexual adults - a higher burden on bisexual individuals.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minorities-individuals who identify as gay/lesbian, bisexual, or other non-heterosexual individuals-experience higher rates of food insecurity (FI) compared to heterosexual individuals. During the COVID-19 pandemic, discrimination and structural racism, which are known risk factors for food insecurity, were perpetuated against sexual and racial/ethnic minorities. However, to our knowledge, a nationally representative analysis of the impact of the pandemic on food insecurity by sexual minority status and based on race/ethnicity is missing. We aimed to determine the degree of …

SETTING: University Hospital in the Appalac…

Unemployment insurance and food insecurity among people who lost employment in the wake of COVID-19.

Forty million U.S. residents lost their jobs in the first two months of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In response, the Federal Government expanded unemployment insurance benefits in both size ($600/week supplement) and scope (to include caregivers and self-employed workers). We assessed the relationship between unemployment insurance and food insecurity among people who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic in the period when the federal unemployment insurance supplement was in place. We analyzed data from the Understanding Coronavirus in America (UAC) cohort, a long…

Measures of USDA Food Security Module, self-reported diagnoses of chronic diseases, and QoL were administered in ASL and English. Approximately 22% reported facing food insecurity, with low food security (11%) and very low food security (11.4%). QoL, but not the presence of chronic diseases, was significantly associated with food insecurity. Higher income and absence of depression acted as protective fact…

Needs and perceptions regarding healthy eating among people at risk of food insecurity: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Healthy eating behaviour is an essential determinant of overall health. This behaviour is generally poor among people at risk of experiencing food insecurity, which may be caused by many factors including perceived higher costs of healthy foods, financial stress, inadequate nutritional knowledge, and inadequate skills required for healthy food preparation. Few studies have examined how these factors influence eating behaviour among people at risk of experiencing food insecurity. We therefore aimed to gain a better understanding of the needs and perceptions regarding healthy eating …
