Eleven patients with 12 three-part fractures of the proximal humerus were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using AO/ASIF buttress plating. All of the fractures healed. There were no failures of fixation. Nine of these patients returned for a follow up of more than 2 years and had a satisfactory rating using Neer's shoulder rating system. Five patients who had an acromioplasty at the time of their initial surgery had slightly better function and range of motion than the remaining patients. Successful operative treatment requires accurate definition of the fracture pattern, carefu

Open reduction of subcondylar fractures achieves precise anatomic alignment of bony fragments and may prevent the postoperative sequelae seen with some closed reductions. Using an extraoral approach, a fracture can be easily seen and manipulated. An intraoral approach avoids large facial scars, facial nerve injury, and allows visualization of the occlusion during the procedure. Cases for this technique should be carefully selected.

The authors present the case of a young woman who sustained ipsilateral scaphoid and Colles' fractures that were treated by a combination of Herbert screw fixation of the scaphoid fracture and external fixation of the colles' fracture. This form of treatment provides optimal conditions for both the early return of wrist function and for the maintenance of the manipulated position.

Sixty-one patients with fractures of the shafts of both bones of the forearm treated by internal fixation were studied retrospectively. The importance of the rigidity of the fixation and the time that elapsed before operation was investigated. Eight cases of non-union and one of delayed union were noted after fractures which had been operated on during the first week by non-rigid internal fixation. On the other hand, in the group of rigidly fixed fractures, the time of operation was not found to have a statistically significant effect on the healing process.

BACKGROUND: Volar locking plates are widely used for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures; however, variation exists in implant selection, construct complexity, and overall cost.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent ORIF with a volar locking plate for distal radius fractures between January 2023 and December 2024 were identified using current procedural terminology codes 25607, 25608, and 25609. Demographic and clinical variables were extracted from the electronic health record. Implant, supply, and total material costs were obtained from cost report

BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in femoral fragility fracture fixation techniques and implants, fixation failures still occur. To restore function, conversion to an endoprosthesis may be preferable to repeated attempts at fixation. The aim of this study was to explore the outcomes of femoral endoprostheses when performed specifically for trauma salvage.
METHODS: We identified 35 patients who underwent femoral endoprosthesis for trauma salvage between January 2012 and December 2022 through review of our prospectively collected institutional implant database, electronic notes, and national P

PICO QUESTION: In dogs undergoing internal fracture fixation does the use of internal fixation and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) accelerate healing compared to internal fixation alone?
CATEGORY OF RESEARCH: Treatment.
NUMBER AND TYPE OF STUDY DESIGNS REVIEWED: Zero.
STRENGTH OF EVIDENCE: Zero.
OUTCOMES REPORTED: There is no evidence showing that dogs undergoing fracture fixation with any internal fixation method (e.g. locking plates, dynamic compression plates) and BMPs present accelerated healing compared to internal fixation alone. In view of the absence of this evidence, it is reco

Little is known regarding outcomes of talus fracture management among patients with diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to compare post-operative outcomes after open reduction and internal fixation for talus fracture in patients with complicated diabetes, uncomplicated diabetes, and patients without diabetes. We used the PearlDiver database to identify patients who underwent operative repair of talus fractures from 2009 to 2021. Complications were evaluated at 30-days, 90-days, and 1 year of surgery. As we performed multiple separate analyses, to minimize the risk of type 1 error we employed t

BACKGROUND: The clinical efficacy of cancellous screws (CS) and femoral neck system (FNS) internal fixation in the treatment of femoral neck fracture (FNF) was compared in this research.
METHODS: Ninety-six patients with FNF were enrolled in this study. There were 47 cases in FNS group and 49 cases in CS group. The data of operation time, intraoperative bleeding, bed days and complication were recorded. Patients' joint function was evaluated by Harris score. At the last follow-up, the cost-effectiveness analysis of the two methods was analyzed according to the total cost of patients and hip f

BACKGROUND: The branches of the supraclavicular nerve are often sacrificed during open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for clavicle fracture. No consensus exists on whether the supraclavicular nerve should be routinely identified and protected during ORIF.
METHODS: We developed a simple method to make nerve sparing easier; Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) solution is locally injected prior to the surgical incision being made. This retrospective study enrolled 340 patients and divided them into supraclavicular-nerve-sparing (n = 45) and supraclavicular-nerve-sacrifice

Fractures involving the anterior process of the calcaneus (APC) are rare, underdiagnosed, and carry a significant increase in morbidity if not identified acutely. Identifying patients with intra-articular fracture extension is crucial as they may benefit from surgical fixation to reduce the risk of morbidity and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. There are no specific guidelines in the United Kingdom regarding the management of these fractures, and there is little evidence regarding optimal management, mainly limited to case reports and small sample observational trials. Previous reports of surgic

PURPOSE: Distal radius fracture (DRF) open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a common surgical procedure. This study assesses reasons and risk factors for readmission after DRF ORIF using the large sample size and follow-up of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database.
METHODS: Adult patients who underwent DRF ORIF were identified in the 2011 to 2016 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Patient demographics, comorbidity status, hospital metrics, and 30-day perioperative outcomes were tabulated. Readmission, time to readm

The pathophysiology of carpal adaptations after fracture of the distal radius is incompletely understood. We report 5 patients who had normal carpal alignment on injury radiographs that developed marked volar angulation of the lunate during recovery from volar plate fixation of a fracture of the distal radius. There were no signs of alteration of the carpal ligaments. Two patients had similar volar tilt on the contralateral side. The cause and optimal treatment of carpal malalignment after restoration distal radial alignment are unclear.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of internal fixation with headless compression hollow embedding screws in the treatment of intraarticular fracture of elbow.
METHODS: Between March 2012 and September 2018, 12 patients with intraarticular fracture of elbow were treated with internal fixation with headless compression hollow embedding screws. There were 7 males and 5 females with an average age of 50.3 years (range, 22-65 years). Cause of injury included falling in 7 cases, falling from high places in 4 cases, and traffic accident in 1 case. Ten patients were distal humerus fractures wh

Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is an accepted treatment for displaced tarsometatarsal joint (TMTJ) fracture dislocations. In general, hardware is routinely removed after 4 months to allow restoration of joint motion and avoid complications of hardware failure. Because few studies report outcomes of TMTJ fractures with retained hardware, there is little consensus regarding the optimal time for hardware removal or if hardware retention leads to adverse outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed the radiographic outcomes of retained hardware after ORIF of TMTJ fractures/dislocations in 61 pat

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to discuss the possible mechanisms of an iatrogenic fracture during operation on an original mandibular fracture in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta.
