Fracture risk assessment in children with benign bone lesions of long bones.

BACKGROUND: Fracture risk assessment in children with benign bone lesions of long bones remains poorly investigated. AIM: To investigate the risk factors for pathological fracture in children with benign bone lesions and to propose a modified scoring system for quantitative analysis of the pathologic fracture risk. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 96 pediatric patients with benign bone lesions. We compared radiographic and clinical features between 40 patients who had fractures through a benign bone lesion and 56 who had no fracture. Information including histological diagnosis, anatomic

[Bone fracture and the healing mechanisms. Metabolic bone disease and skeletal healing].

We described about skeletal healing in metabolic bone diseases. Fracture healing in osteoporosis was not well investigated basically and clinically. Clinical research is difficult because fracture healing is affected by underlined disease causing osteoporosis and medication for osteoporosis. Recent basic research using ovariectomized model revealed delayed callus formation and decreased callus strength. As for osteomalacia, callus formation was delayed, and to correct the calcium and phosphate balance using vitamin D or phosphate improve the fracture healing and mineralization. As for osteopet

Changes in bone mass and bone turnover following distal forearm fracture.

Bone loss occurs close to a fracture and is associated with increased bone turnover. Fracture healing itself results in increased markers of bone turnover. But the exact patterns of these changes after different fractures are unclear. We aimed to investigate the changes in bone density and biochemical markers following distal forearm fracture. Twenty women (mean age 63 years) were recruited following fracture of the distal radius and ulna. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the hand and forearm were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the fingers

The presence of Wormian bones increases the fracture resistance of equine cranial bone.

Wormian (intrasutural) bones are small, irregular bones, that are found in the cranial sutures of the skull. The occurrence of Wormian bones in human skulls has been well documented but few studies have detected the presence of such bones in domestic animals. Although some research has linked the presence of Wormian bones to bone pathology, its anatomical significance in healthy individuals is not known. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has examined the biomechanical features of Wormian bone. This study uses microCT imaging of the parietal bone region to determine the frequency

Convex bone deformity after closed reduction of nasal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: Nasal fracture is the most common type of facial fracture treated by plastic surgeons. Here, we clarify the postoperative deformities that frequently remain after closed reduction of fresh nasal bone fracture by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT). METHODS: Hundred consecutive cases of fresh nasal bone fracture in patients treated between May 2010 and January 2016 were examined. After closed reduction, the overall appearance of the arch formed by the nasal bone and maxillary process was evaluated as 'Excellent', 'Good' or 'Fair'. Patients were also asked about their over

Treatment of frontal bone fracture sequelae through inversion of the bone fragment.

Treatment of frontal sinus fractures depends on the structures involved: the anterior wall, the posterior wall and the nasofrontal duct. It may vary from the correction of the defect in the anterior wall to the cranialization with obliteration of the nasofrontal duct. The inversion of the frontal sinus's anterior wall to correct the defect in the fractured region is a good treatment option for sequelae, since this technique eliminates or reduces the use of biomaterial in the area, and allows direct assessment of the permeability of the nasofrontal duct. This work describes the technique of fra

Outcome of unstable fractures of metacarpal and phalangeal bones treated by bone tie.

BACKGROUND: Unstable fractures of the metacarpal and phalangeal bones of the hand need surgical stabilization which should be rigid enough for early active mobilization. Conventional methods of open reduction and stabilization in the form of composite fixation or screws with or without plates have served the purpose but can be definitely improvised addressing both biological and mechanical principles of fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 34 patients (29 males and 5 females) with an average age of 32 years (range 10-64 years) with unstable fractures of the metacarpal and phalangeal bones of hand

Advanced imaging of bone macrostructure and microstructure in bone fragility and fracture repair.

Research into the molecular and cellular pathways focusing on bone fragility and fracture-healing has led to new potential treatments to aid in fracture-healing. This research has focused on physical as well as biological modes of treatment. As new products and methods are derived, it is essential to develop effective and sensitive noninvasive means by which early changes in the fracture repair process can be detected. Specialized noninvasive and/or nondestructive techniques can provide structural information about local and systemic skeletal health, the propensity to fracture, and the pathoph

One-piece Craniofacial Bone Fracture Reduction With an Additional Single Osteotomy at the Zygomaticomaxillary Buttress: A Successful Reduction of Frontoorbitozygomaticomaxillary Fracture Associated With a Temporoparietal Bone Fracture.

A frontoorbitozygomaticomaxillary fracture, also known as a complex midface fracture or "quadripod fracture," is a type of facial fracture involving multiple midface region bones. This includes the frontal bone (forehead), orbitozygomatic complex (which includes the zygomatic bone or cheekbone and the orbital bones around the eye), and the maxillary bone (upper jaw). These complex midface fractures associated with temporoparietal bone fractures can occur in clinical practice. However, a single-piece fracture of these has not been reported before. This study reports a 44-year-old male patient w

Micro-CT evaluation of bone defects: applications to osteolytic bone metastases, bone cysts, and fracture.

Bone defects can occur in various forms and present challenges to performing a standard micro-CT evaluation of bone quality because most measures are suited to homogeneous structures rather than ones with spatially focal abnormalities. Such defects are commonly associated with pain and fragility. Research involving bone defects requires quantitative approaches to be developed if micro-CT is to be employed. In this study, we demonstrate that measures of inter-microarchitectural bone spacing are sensitive to the presence of focal defects in the proximal tibia of two distinctly different mouse mo

Pediatric Forearm Fractures: Investigating the Functional Outcomes of Titanium Elastic Nailing for Unstable Both-Bone Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: There has been debate regarding the advantages of cruciate-retaining over posterior stabilized (PS) knee arthroplasty and vice versa. Many authors consider any coronal plane deformity > 15° as a contraindication for cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty. We aimed to compare whether functional outcome, deformity correction, and survivorship of cruciate retaining knee arthroplasty (CR) for severe varus deformity are equivalent to that ofposterior cruciate ligament substituting (PS) for 6 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective comparative study among patien

LncRNA GABARAPL2 promotes non‑union long bone fractures by suppressing bone mesenchymal stromal cell osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Fracture healing is a complex biological process involving precisely coordinated phases of inflammation, cartilage formation, vascularization, and bone remodeling. Growing evidence suggests that non-coding RNAs play crucial regulatory roles in bone metabolism. OBJECTIVE: This study systematically investigated the role and molecular mechanisms of lncRNA GABARAPL2 (lnc_GABARAPL2) in fracture healing through integrated bioinformatics analysis, clinical validation, and functional experiments, with the goal of identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for impaired fracture h

Multicenter study on atypical femoral fractures in patients with bone metastases taking bone- modifying agents.

Bone-modifying agents (BMAs), with bone-resorptive inhibitory effects, such as zoledronic acid and denosumab, are widely used at higher doses for bone-related events caused by bone metastasis of malignant tumors. These drugs have been suggested to be associated with atypical femoral fractures (AFFs), and the relationship between BMAs and AFFs has attracted attention. To investigate the clinical features including bone union time of AFFs in patients administered BMA for bone metastasis, we conducted a retrospective multicenter study. Thirty AFFs from 19 patients were enrolled in this study. Thi
