INTRODUCTION: Injuries around shoulder and clavicle are quite common. Injuries involving lateral end of clavicle involving acromioclavicular joints are commoner injuries. In this rare injury, we report about a case involving clavicle and scapular spine fracture with acromioclavicular disruption which has never been described in English literature as per our knowledge.
CASE REPORT: A patient with closed clavicle and scapular spine fracture with acromioclavicular joint disruption was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of clavicle and scapular spine as a staged procedures. Six mon

We present a 19-year-old collegiate athlete who sustained a low-energy closed tibial shaft fracture. Following closed reduction, the dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses were symmetric to the contralateral limb on physical examination. Angiography later confirmed triple vessel arterial disruption complicated by delayed ischemia requiring limb revascularization. Lower extremity triple vessel occlusion from a low-energy injury is rare, and delayed presentation requiring limb salvage is even more unusual. We review the literature, describe the diagnosis and treatment, and propose a strategy

OBJECTIVE: To describe a surgical device for dosed reduction of tibial fracture and investigate its clinical effectiveness.
METHODS: Between June 2010 and December 2012, 24 cases of tibial fractures were treated with intramedullary nailing using a surgical device for closed reduction. There were 18 males and 6 females with an average age of 40 years (range, 20-64 years). All fractures were closed. There were 3 proximal third fractures, 12 middle third fractures, and 9 distal third fractures. According to AO classification, 12 cases were classified as type A, 8 cases as type B, and 4 cases as

BACKGROUND: Nonunion following a proximal fifth metatarsal metaphyseal-diaphyseal or Jones fracture can cause considerable pain with high morbidity and loss of work. Treatment should aim for early union, thus allowing early return to activity. The present study evaluated the outcomes and the time required for union following closed intramedullary screw fixation for this condition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2005 to August 2009, 14 patients were diagnosed with nonunion following a Jones fracture. Mean age at surgery was 49 years. Mean duration from injury to surgery was 28 weeks. A

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis in the setting of closed fractures is a recognized association in the literature, but to our knowledge, septic arthritis after a closed intra-articular fracture has not yet been reported.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 3 cases of septic arthritis after closed intra-articular fractures of the proximal phalanx of the great toe, distal tibia, and distal humerus.
RESULTS: The patients presented with fever, erythema, pain, and elevated infectious indices. All patients had a delay in diagnosis of up to 10 days. On diagnosis, all patients underwent open ir

Rupture of the tibialis posterior tendon may occur during a trauma in pronation-external rotation of the foot or, less commonly, during a direct trauma of the ankle. When an isolated fracture of the medial malleolus is present, it is more likely that a direct trauma has occurred. A 36-year-old man with a non-displaced medial malleolar fracture was evaluated. Repair of the tendon and reduction of the fracture were performed. Twenty-four months after the operation, the fracture was completely healed, the patient was asymptomatic, he had a normal ankle range of motion, and the function and streng

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar fracture of humerus in children is most common in first decade of life and needs proper management to prevent complications like cubitus varus, elbow stiffness and compartment syndrome. There are various treatment modalities i.e. traction, closed reduction and casting, open reduction and internal fixation and percutaneous pinning. Purpose of the study was to know the outcome of closed reduction and casting in displaced supracondylar fracture of humerus in children while comparing the results with published literature.
METHODS: Study was conducted at the Orthopaedics

Experimental observation on the relation between the apposition of scaphoid fracture surfaces and wrist position showed that fracture reduction could be achieved when the wrist was placed in a position from 15 degrees radial deviation to 15 degrees ulnar deviation provided that the wrist assumed certain amount of extension. The principle was that the more the wrist was radially deviated, the more the extension was needed. Fracture displacement occurred regularly and could be classified into three types, which were related to different loading patterns on the distal scaphoid.

Bosworth fracture-dislocation presents a challenge in ankle joint injuries owing to its irreducible nature, requiring open reduction in most cases. Reports on successful outcomes following closed reduction are limited, necessitating exploration into alternative treatment approaches. Herein, we report a case of Bosworth fracture-dislocation in a 39-year-old man, with radiographic evidence of posterior displacement of the distal portion of the proximal fibular fragment incarcerated behind the tibia. Closed reduction was attempted with the patient's knee flexed at 90°, employing gradual traction,

Pilon fractures are intra-articular injuries involving the tibial plafond and have a wide range of complexity. The timing and type of fixation in these injuries is dictated by soft tissue status and energy imparted to the distal tibial plafond. We had a unique clinical situation in which axial loading of the talus caused severe comminution of the tibial plafond and fracture of the distal third of the fibula. Further action of these forces caused displacement of the fibular segment into dorsum of the foot along with part of the articular surface of the tibial plafond without causing any externa

The Bosworth fracture is defined as a bimalleolar fracture-dislocation of the ankle, with entrapment of the fibula behind the posterior tubercle of the distal tibia. In the current orthopedic literature, not only is this fracture pattern rare, but this type of fracture-dislocation has also been reported to be near impossible to close reduce, with the majority requiring early open reduction and internal fixation to prevent complications and poor clinical outcomes. Reported early complications include compartment syndrome and soft tissue complications from repeated closed reduction attempts. Com

OBJECTIVES: To test the null hypothesis that there is no significant change in radiographic parameters, which determines an acceptable reduction, beyond 3 weeks in distal radius fractures with closed treatment.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of a prospectively gathered registry of distal radius fractures.
SETTING: Academic medical center.
PATIENTS: Patients who underwent closed treatment of distal radius fracture.
INTERVENTION: Sequential radiographic evaluation.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Change of radiographic measurement including radial inclination, radial height, ulnar variance, articu

CASE: A 10-year-old boy presented with a Salter-Harris II distal radius fracture that was irreducible by closed methods. An open reduction was performed in the operating room where a sleeve of periosteum was found interposed between the fracture fragments. Successful reduction was performed without difficulty after the periosteum was removed from the fracture.
CONCLUSION: Soft-tissue interposition must be kept in mind when having difficulty performing closed reductions of pediatric distal radius physeal fractures to avoid excessive reduction attempts.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify deficiencies in initiating anti-osteoporotic treatment following a fragility femoral fracture.
METHODS: All patients ≥55 years of age treated for a fragility femoral fracture between June 2012 and May 2017 were enrolled. Medications at discharge and at 90 days and 1 year of follow up were analyzed. Patients were classified into 4 groups: Group I did not receive any treatment for osteoporosis; Group II received only calcium and vitamin D3; Group III received an anabolic agent, calcium, and vitamin D3; and Group IV received bisphosphonates,

BACKGROUND: Nasal fracture is the most common type of facial fracture treated by plastic surgeons. Here, we clarify the postoperative deformities that frequently remain after closed reduction of fresh nasal bone fracture by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT).
METHODS: Hundred consecutive cases of fresh nasal bone fracture in patients treated between May 2010 and January 2016 were examined. After closed reduction, the overall appearance of the arch formed by the nasal bone and maxillary process was evaluated as 'Excellent', 'Good' or 'Fair'. Patients were also asked about their over
