Background: There is recent renewed interest in the effect of hand dominance on distal radius fractures. Current studies focus on functional or patient-reported outcomes, with lack of studies pertaining to radiological outcomes. The primary aim of this study is to examine the effect of hand dominance on time to fracture healing following surgical fixation of distal radius fracture. We also looked at the effect of age, gender, fracture comminution and American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) status on time to fracture healing. Methods: Patients who underwent distal radius fracture fixation

Background and Objectives: Rib fractures are common in patients with trauma, and patients with multiple rib fractures often require surgical stabilization. Because rib fractures may occur at different sites along the ribs, the technical approach to surgical stabilization varies. Here, we present a case of posterior rib fractures with multiple paraspinal fragmented rib segments that were successfully treated with costovertebral plate fixation. Case Presentation: A truck driver was injured after falling from the top of a truck. Computed tomography scans of the chest showed multiple flail segment

BACKGROUND: Nonunion is a rare complication for distal fibular fractures. However, when there is a high degree of comminution, nonunion may occur. In this article, we describe a novel technique that uses the oblong hole of a locking plate to lengthen the fibula for fracture reduction. This technique is straightforward and allows for easy control of the comminuted fracture to restore length and rotation at the time of plate application without opening the fracture site.
METHODS: Thirty-five consecutive patients, who were treated with the minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technique

Because of the lack of anatomical landmarks during reduction of multiple articular surfaces and fragments in comminuted patellar fractures, loss of bone fragments or aggravation of soft tissue and ligament injuries readily occurs. In the present case, we used multiple three-dimensional (3D)-printed guide plates to reduce and fix a comminuted patellar fracture. A 22-year-old man was hospitalized for 2 days because of left knee joint pain and limited movement caused by a traffic accident. Preoperative imaging revealed a comminuted fracture of the left patella (type 34-C3 according to the AO/OTA

BACKGROUND: We consider dual-plate fixation to improve construct rigidity in cases with fracture complexity. The purpose of this study is to compare the rate of nonunion, prognosis, and complications at 6-12 months for surgically treated acute mid-shaft clavicle fractures when extra-periosteal dual-plate fixation is used in place of the conventional single-plate fixation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The comparative study was conducted on 47 patients who received acute mid-shaft clavicular fracture treatment in our hospital from March 2015 to July 2018. All patients were divided into dual-plate fix

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of comminuted patella fractures with tension band has resulted in impaired functional outcomes because the relationship between tension band and the tendons is always underestimated. We developed a modified enlacement (ME) technique to better place the tension-band under the quadriceps and patellar tendons and close to the patella. The study aimed to compare the ME with conventional enlacement (CE) technique regarding recovery of knee function.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 51 patients with comminuted patella fractures operated between January 2012 and December 2016 were revie

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this investigation was to review the preliminary results and patients outcome following treatment with an anatomically preshaped LCP in patients with comminuted fractures of the proximal ulna. We hypothesized that this fixation system provides equal or superior results in fracture care when compared with other available plating devices, but results in better patient's comfort due to its low-profile design.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2007 and 2009, 15 patients with comminuted fractures of the proximal ulna including three posterior Monteggia fractures were manag

Between 1996 and 2000, we treated ten patients with severely comminuted fractures of the radial head using low-profile mini-plates. Their mean age was 42 years (24 to 71). Three fractures were Mason type III and seven were Mason-Johnston type IV. At a mean follow-up of 28.5 months (15 to 44), all fractures had united. The plates were removed in nine patients. No patient had difficulty with daily activities or symptoms of instability of the elbow. The mean range of flexion of the elbow was from 7 degrees to 135 degrees, with 74 degrees of supination and 85 degrees of pronation. According to the

The treatment of comminuted fractures of the radial head with concomitant injuries of the ulnar complex by resection of the radial head usually does not provide satisfactory long-term results. Other than joint instability in the elbow and a limited range of motion, radius proximalisation in the sense of ulnocarpal impingement, osteoarthritis and pain in the elbow have been described. Between 1995 and 1997, 11 radial head prostheses were implanted in ten patients who had sustained a comminuted fracture of the radial head with concomitant injury to the ulnar complex. A follow-up survey was condu

Ligamentotaxis with the use of external fixator offers a sound method for treating comminuted distal radial fractures. In an effort to shorten the period of external fixation, primary cancellous bone grafting and functional bracing were used as an adjunct to ligamentotaxis. The external fixator was left in place for 3 weeks, followed by functional bracing for another 3 weeks. This paper presents the results of 54 patients with an average follow-up of 31.5 months. Results showed that 80% of the patients regained full range of motion in their hands, wrists, and forearms. More than 80% of the pat

INTRODUCTION: A global concern is vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency. There is a particularly high risk for pregnant women, people of color (Blacks, Hispanics, and those with increased skin melanin pigmentation), obese children and adults, and children and adults who are abstinent from direct sun exposure. The goal of this study was to understand the incidence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with osteoporotic hip fractures in our rural population and also to know its association with osteoporosis and osteoporotic hip fractures in a tertiary care trauma center.
METHODS: This prospectiv
